Lake Berryessa is the largest lake in Napa County, California. This reservoir in the Vaca Mountains is formed by the Monticello Dam, which provides water and hydroelectricity to the North Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area.
The reservoir was named for the first European settlers in the Berryessa Valley, José Jesús and Sexto "Sisto" Berrelleza (a Basque surname, Anglicized to "Berreyesa", then later respelled "Berryessa"), who were granted Rancho Las Putas in 1843.
Prior to its inundation, the valley was an agricultural region, whose soils were considered among the finest in the country. The main town in the valley, Monticello, was abandoned in order to construct the reservoir. This abandonment was chronicled by the photographers Dorothea Lange and Pirkle Jones in their book Death of a Valley. Construction of Monticello Dam began in 1953, completed in 1958, and the reservoir filled by 1963, creating what at the time was the second-largest reservoir in California after Shasta Lake. The Monticello Dam with Lake Berryessa, Putah Diversion Dam with Lake Solano, and associated water distribution systems and lands are known collectively as the Solano Project, which is distinct from other federal water projects in California such as the Central Valley Project.
The Berreyesa family were a substantial clan of Basque-heritage Spanish-speaking settlers in early Northern California, who held extensive land in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
The Berryessa name was also lent to several locations in the greater San Francisco Bay Area:
A lake is an area of variable size filled with water, localized in a basin, that is surrounded by land, apart from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean (except for sea lochs in Scotland and Ireland), and therefore are distinct from lagoons, and are also larger and deeper than ponds, though there are no official or scientific definitions. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which are usually flowing. However most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams.
Natural lakes are generally found in mountainous areas, rift zones, and areas with ongoing glaciation. Other lakes are found in endorheic basins or along the courses of mature rivers. In some parts of the world there are many lakes because of chaotic drainage patterns left over from the last Ice Age. All lakes are temporary over geologic time scales, as they will slowly fill in with sediments or spill out of the basin containing them.
Many lakes are artificial and are constructed for industrial or agricultural use, for hydro-electric power generation or domestic water supply, or for aesthetic or recreational purposes.

LAKE BERRYESSA, CALIFORNIA — The Lake Berryessa reservoir in northern California is set to reach full capacity for the first time in 11 years. The Glory Hole spillway is located about 200 feet from the Monticello Dam. The distance from the Glory Hole to its exit point, located in Putah Creek, is about 700 feet. The 'morning glory' spillway beside the Monticello dam at lake Berryessa in Napa County, California, United States. It was constructed between 1953 and 1957. This inverted bell-mouth spillway stops the lake rising to a dangerous level and spilling over the dam. In effect, it acts like a giant sink plughole. The water flows down a concrete shaft and comes out of a tunnel below the dam. The top of the construction has a diameter of 72 feet (22 meters) and the shaft is 28 feet at its narrowest point. Do not swim anywhere near one of these !

At drone hovers at approximately 1,000 feet above Lake Berryessa and then descends into the famous glory hole and almost gets lost forever. Our guess is that all the water draining into the spillway created a sort of vacuum that made the drone unstable the further it goes down. On June 24th, The Boss, Janet, Missy Jenn, Bobby & myself went for a two night stay to Pleasure Cove on Lake Berryessa. The lake is a reclamation reservoir and provides recreation, power generation, and drinking water for Northern California, The Lake is located about 50 miles East of Santa Rosa, in Napa County. It's a rather isolated place with little to no cell phone service and not much in the way of amenities. The Boss and Janet rented cabin 17, a big unit that sleeps up to ten. It was outrageously hot, with temps around 100-110, but the air conditioning was nice at night. We cooked out on a real nice cook stove the Boss and Janet bought. We had lobster and filet mingon night one, while night two featured barbecued chicken and roasted corn. I had a chance to go boating, swimming and...

Fire is not headed to the Berryessa Highlands, but there is a big battle going on in part of Capell Valley to hold it back. Listen to the narration by Evan Kilkus. Circle Oaks is ok. Turtle Rock is ok.
I was hovering at approximately 1000 feet above Lake Berryessa, then I descended into the Glory Hole and almost lost my drone. When I lowered the drone into the Glory Hole it became unstable and almost crashed into the side of the Glory Hole. (3:08) My guess is all the water draining into the spillway created a sort of vacuum that made the drone unstable the further into it I flew. I spent a couple of days camping at Lake Berryessa at Pleasure Cove. $37 a night full hook ups, plus $10.50 for the dog. It's nice, mostly the people who own the boats, camping wit their kids. Lots of kids, the dog got some practice NOT barking at them; he is getting better! Overall, Pleasure Cove is pleasant. This area was gorgeous! And the roads are good! The people were nice! Super good vibes! I need to come back this way, and do some boondocking in the woods, or on the shores of Lake Shasta. This is on I-5 north of Redding and between the town of Mount Shasta. One campground I will definitely go to in the future is Castle Crags. I tried to get a road shot of the crags, but couldn't get it, but they are super tall and spectacular. I hiked to Loomis Lake with my 12-year-old son. The trail is relatively flat for the first 8 km, gaining only 250 m. The reason this is not a popular hike is that you have to ford the Highwood River once, and Loomis Creek 5 times. The last 3.8 km to the lake climbs 400 m, so a pretty steep climb. The reward is Loomis Lake, a deep blue tarn lake. I'm still getting used to my GoPro, but I think my viewers will enjoy the point-of-view shots filmed during most of this trip. This video is more about scenic shots and what it's like to walk in the woods, and less about "how to hike". Cheers.
Again I start this but I'll add a new twist
So the masses can't resist
The message brought by a Panther strictly
To relieve the disease of the sickly
So long your mind's been trapped
Slave, 'cause you're shamed to be black
Ignorant of the purpose of the plan
To keep the black man down under
So I'll address y'all this time
Make a statement that's on my mind
Brothers scared of revolution should be
Thinkin' of the way that we could be
Miss blue eyes, how'd you do that?
Tried to put him in but the skin is still black
Thinkin' of a way to escape the darkness
See the weave and indeed I start this off
Black is black is black is black off
Black is black is black is black
S E D I T I O N
In the mood of the move I'm showin'
See the way the clinches have been torn
Cold spittin' facts to the miracle Earth born
So what's your next move, black?
Go to school or maybe join a frat
Still you seem lost, the mind is brainwashed
It can't be good 'cause your mind's the cost
So flip on your Young MC
Or Jazzy Jeff or whatever the case be
Mindless music for the masses makes ya
Think less of the one that hates ya
Then trained to respect the game
And you turn your back on a black with the same claim
Oh, blessed but you guess they mean less
Because another brother can't afford to dress
The way you do but who said you're all that?
Made a little money, now your skin ain't black?
C'mon I don't think your shit don't stink
You can't run from the one whose primal instinct
Is to fought the words I taught ya
Thought you moved quick but I just caught ya
Now you try to say that you don't remember me
I'm P-Dog from the B.P. posse
Or a mob, that's known as Scarface
Pro-black and some think pro-hate
But in fact it's a call for unity
Heed the plea of weak we're soon to be
Move, start this
Black is black is black is black
Enter the dark side
Black is black is black is black
Yeah, funky
Dance
Now who did you think that you were steppin' to
Once your job came through
Don't get big, 'cause I caught your accent
Shoulda been real but you wanted mass appeal
Next time you might think of this
Might remember why I'm above this
But for now, my brother, I'll say
