The UK is an extremely good and profitable place for big businesses situated elsewhere in the European Union to sell their goods and services into. These companies will not want to see any barriers to trade put up between them and this lucrative market place. Total has, says the Express, serious investments in the UK including shale gas exploration rights that it acquired in 2014. Then there’s Volkswagen, Europe’s largest car company, which has a nearly eight percent share of our car market. It has 39 power stations in the UK, an awful lost of investment. One services provider, the commercial insurance company Allianz, employs 4,600 people in 26 UK offices, where it has increased its operating profit from £36 million to £96 million after the EU Referendum, says the Express. Now, EU based companies such as this and the people that work for them, will be as keen as any Leave voter to see a smooth transition for the UK out of the EU. Just the sort of support a party leader needs during a party conference. And in an interview in the Guardian, the Communities Secretary, Said Javid, basically made his irritation over the way this year’s snap general election was run, quite clear. He said that the Tories banged on too much about Brexit and did not talk enough about the bread and butter domestic issues. But what he forgets, is that without that strong Brexit message many Leave voters may have put their cross in another box - something to ponder on. Anti-Brexit demonstrators are also in attendance at the Tory party conference in Manchester, with reports already emerging of smoke bombs being thrown. A nasty and disturbing poster with the words ‘Hang the Tories’ written on it complete with hanging puppets, had to be removed from a Manchester footbridge by the police - what would a party conference be without those oh so peaceful lefties? And just to help dispel any doom-mongering that may come from the Remain side, the pound rose overall this month against the Euro from 1.08 Euros to the pound at the end of August, to 1.13 Euros to the pound yesterday. The Remainers will of course claim that this is because the Bank of England has just signalled a possible interest rate rise as early as November. But what they fail to say, is that a large player in the fall of the pound after the Brexit vote was the Bank of England lowering rates from half a percent to a quarter of a percent last August when our central bank also said that rates might have to fall further and all this was because of the Brexit vote said the bank.
