The United Kingdom is a unitary democracy governed within the framework of a constitutional monarchy, in which the Monarch is the head of state and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is the head of government. Executive power is exercised by Her Majesty's Government, on behalf of and by the consent of the Monarch, as well as by the devolved Governments of Scotland and Wales, and the Northern Ireland Executive. Legislative power is vested in the two chambers of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, the House of Commons and the House of Lords, as well as in the Scottish parliament and Welsh and Northern Ireland assemblies. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. The highest court is the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.
The UK political system is a multi-party system. Since the 1920s, the two largest political participation have been the Conservative Party and the Labour Party. Before the Labour Party rose in British politics, the Liberal Party was the other major political party along with the Conservatives. Though coalition and minority governments have been an occasional feature of parliamentary politics, the first-past-the-post electoral system used for general elections tends to maintain the dominance of these two parties, though each has in the past century relied upon a third party such as the Liberal Democrats to deliver a working majority in Parliament. A Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government held office from 2010 until 2015, the first coalition since 1945. The coalition ended following Parliamentary elections on May 7, 2015, in which the Conservative Party won an outright majority of 330 seats in the House of Commons, while their coalition partners lost all but eight seats.
British Politics is a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal covering British political studies published by Palgrave Macmillan. The editors-in-chief are Colin Hay (University of Sheffield) and Peter Kerr (University of Birmingham).
The journal is abstracted and indexed in International Political Science Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, Worldwide Political Science Abstracts, and the Social Sciences Citation Index. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2014 impact factor of 0.585, ranking it 97th out of 161 journals in the category "Political Science".

As it's the British General Election on Thursday, we thought you might enjoy this Monty Pythonesque animated video that Brainwave produced a couple of years back. The video is called British Political History Condensed. It'll take you through thousands of years of British history - all the way from 1066 to 2008 - in just 8 minutes 49 seconds flat. The video also explains the British political system and the election process - with typical British humor of course. This little film was written and produced by us especially for the students of Georgetown Day School, here in DC. Hope you enjoy it.
When I made this video in early 2017, I thought that the next UK General Election would not happen until 2020 -- how wrong I was! So here is the video, just a few days ahead of a surprise General Election in June 2017. In this lesson I will explain a little about how the UK political system works, and introduce you to some of the vocabulary. You'll learn about the major parties, local councils, constituencies, and more. So, welcome to the unpredictable world of UK politics! This is a great lesson to help you understand the news, even if you don't live in the UK. Listening to British news is a great way to practise your English, and understanding what they are talking about will really help! Don't forget to do the quiz afterwards, to test your knowledge, at https://www.engvid.com/uk-politi...

Parliament debated on Trump’s upcoming state visit to the UK. John Iadarola and Ben Mankiewicz, the hosts of The Young Turks, show you what they said. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. https://www.tytnetwork.com/go “British MPs lined up on Monday to pour scorn on a “racist and sexist” Donald Trump, who they said should not be allowed to come to Britain for a state visit because of the risk it would embarrass the Queen. The US president was compared to a “petulant child” and had his intelligence questioned by MPs during a three-hour debate triggered after more than 1.8 million people signed a petition urging Theresa May to cancel her invitation. So many politicians packed into Westminster Hall for the debate that they had to have their speeches limited to five minutes ...
Britain is adjusting to a new political landscape after a shock election victory for Prime Minister David Cameron that decapitated the opposition and bolstered secessionists in Scotland. Cameron's Conservatives won 331 of the 650 seats in parliament, giving the prime minister a second term in office -- this time with a majority for his centre-right party. VIDEOGRAPHIC

Julia Hartley-Brewer examines the role of Leader of the Opposition and asks what lessons David Cameron can learn from history as he plots his path to power. He has already abandoned his party's confrontational stance as he bids to recast the image of the Tories as the nasty party and rebrand it as modern, compassionate and caring. The programme looks at what he can learn from the tactics of previous opposition leaders, from Winston Churchill to Tony Blair.
