This is a pure blind test over the renowned Neumann U87 vs the Rode NT1-A.
Both microphones were plugged with equal cables to the pres of a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56. All setting were the same and the performance was captured simultaneously.
Katie Quinton beautifully sang "My Way" on her own way over Rui Santos piano version of the song played in "B".

Live vocal microphone comparison featuring the Neumann KMS 105, Shure KSM9, DPA D:facto II and Earthworks SR40V.
Hello this is Matt from the Sonic Sense Resource Center.
Right now we’re gonna check out 4 high-end, handheld condenser vocal microphones and hear audio samples of each one. We’ll hear the Dfacto II from DPA, the SR40V from Earthworks, Neumann’s KMS105, and the KSM9 from Shure.
And remember, more samples of these and many other microphones are available at the SSRC along with downloadable samples of everything from studio monitors to interfaces. Make sure you check it out!
Okay, before we hear the microphones, let’s quickly go over a few key features- and
be sure to turn your annotations “on� for optimum functionality.
DPA ‘s Dfacto II is a supercardioid mic that features a modular capsule system and a 3 stage pop protection filter. DPA’s adaptor system allows the Dfacto II to be compatible with many popular, existing wireless systems. (Shure, Sony, Lectrosonics, Line 6, Sennheiser, Wisycom)
Earthworks SR40V is a hypercardioid mic that has an extended frequency response up to 40khz. Earthworks states that the SR40v’s extreme accuracy in the time domain provides clean reproduction free of distortion and smearing.
Neumann’s KMS 105 has a supercardioid pattern and a transformerless circuit design.
A 120hz high pass filter is employed to help reduce proximity effect, while a thick-walled metal housing and a hardened steel grill provide protection from stage abuse.
The KSM9 from Shure features a dual diaphragm design that allows you to switch between a cardioid or supercardioid polar pattern. Shure states that their advanced suspension system isolates the mic element from vibrations and handling noise.

John von Neumann (/vÉ’n ˈnɔɪmÉ™n/; Hungarian: Neumann János (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈnÉ’jmÉ’n ˈjaË?noʃ ˈlÉ’joʃ]; December 28, 1903 – February 8, 1957) was a Hungarian-American pure and applied mathematician, physicist, inventor, and polymath. He made major contributions to a number of fields, including mathematics (foundations of mathematics, functional analysis, ergodic theory, geometry, topology, and numerical analysis), physics (quantum mechanics, hydrodynamics, fluid dynamics and quantum statistical mechanics), economics (game theory), computing (Von Neumann architecture, linear programming, self-replicating machines, stochastic computing), and statistics.
He was a pioneer of the application of operator theory to quantum mechanics, in the development of functional analysis, a principal member of the Manhattan Project and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (as one of the few originally appointed), and a key figure in the development of game theory and the concepts of cellular automata, the universal constructor and the digital computer. He published 150 papers in his life; 60 in pure mathematics, 20 in physics, and 60 in applied mathematics. His last work, an unfinished manuscript written while in the hospital, was later published in book form as The Computer and the Brain.

Right now we’re gonna check out Neumann’s new TLM107 large diaphragm condenser microphone, and compare it with AKG’s C414XLII, and the Kiwi from Blue. This is just a small sample of the many mics you can listen to at the SSRC. We’ll hear each mic on a variety of sources, with even more audio samples available at the Sonic Sense Resource Center. Before we hear them, let’s take a quick look at each mic. Neumann’s new TLM107 is the latest model to join their transformerless microphone family. While we all know of Neumann’s legacy, this should not be considered a “retro� or “nostalgia� mic. The TLM107 features a brand new capsule, designed exclusively for this microphone, and an innovative “navigation� switch that controls polar pattern, filter, and attenuation settings. AKG’s C414 has gone through a lot of changes since it’s introduction in 1971. Today there are two versions of the C414 available and we’ll be focusing on the XLII for this comparison. Samples of the XLS are also available at the Sonic Sense Resource Center. The XL-II is basically an update of 1993’s TL- II, featuring lower self-noise, higher output, and the addition of an LED polar-pattern indicator. The once-noisy polar pattern switch has also been improved to provide silent switching. And finally the Kiwi from Blue Microphones. The massive Kiwi is Blue’s flagship solid state mic. 9 polar patterns are available, and as with all Blue mics, pads and Hi-Pass filters are rejected in favor of an ultra-pure signal path between the capsule and the microphone circuit. Much to the delight of musicians and microphone enthusiasts everywhere, Neumann has resumed production of the legendary U47 FET microphone. Built to the original production documents and schematics, this is not merely a tribute, but the real deal. While it should not be confused as an attempt to re-create the legendary U47 Tube, you can compare it in the Sonic Sense Resource Center. In it’s first incarnation, the U47 FET was embraced for its ability to handle very loud sources and was often relegated to use in front of kick drums and loud guitar cabinets. However, it’s versatility at capturing everything from a high SPL source to a gentle acoustic guitar passage, has sometimes been overlooked. Right now, we’re gonna compare the NEW U47 FET with three other Neumann mics including thevenerable U87ai, the TLM 67 and the M 147 Tube on a variety of sources to test their versatility. Please leave the annotations on for optimal functionality. For decades Neumann mics have been a studio standard for critical vocal reproduction, so let’s start by hearing how each mic captures a powerful female vocalist. All vocals were recorded without any EQ, compression, high pass filters, or pop screens, directly into a Grace Design preamp and Benchmark A to D converters. (comparing…) In addition to being an esteemed vocal mic, the U47 fet also enjoys a reputation as the standard as a front of kick drum mic. Let’s hear how each mic fares in this high volume application. The mics were all placed in the same position, 6 inches from the front head of a booming Yamaha Oak Custom 22� kick drum. All drum mics went through a Toft Series ATB console with no EQ or compression with A-to-D conversion handled by an Apollo 16 from Universal Audio. (listening to each mic with the mix and solo) Let’s wrap up with some guitar samples. We put each of these mics in front of an acoustic guitar and a screaming tube amppushing 100 dB at the microphone position All guitars were captured through the Grace preamp and Benchmark converters. First, the acoustic. For this test we kept each mic 7 inches from the fret board at the neck-joint position of the instrument. (listening) And now the electric. Mics were placed with the capsules 5� from the grille cloth, and routed through the Grace/Benchmark signal chain/path (listening…) You’ve just had a small taste of our large diaphragm mic comparisons. Neumann U87 vs Rode NT1-A
This is a pure blind test over the renowned Neumann U87 vs the Rode NT1-A. Both microphones were plugged with equal cables to the pres of a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56. All setting were the same and the performance was captured simultaneously. Katie Quinton beautifully sang "My Way" on her own way over Rui Santos piano version of the song played in "B". Hello this is Matt from the Sonic Sense Resource Center.
Right now we’re gonna check out 4 high-end, handheld condenser vocal microphones and hear audio samples of each one. We’ll hear the Dfacto II from DPA, the SR40V from Earthworks, Neumann’s KMS105, and the KSM9 from Shure.

Okay, before we hear the microphones, let’s quickly go over a few key features- and
be sure to turn your annotations “on� for optimum functionality.
DPA ‘s Dfacto II is a supercardioid mic that features a modular capsule system and a 3 stage pop protection filter. DPA’s adaptor system allows the Dfacto II to be compatible with many popular, existing wireless systems. (Shure, Sony, Lectrosonics, Line 6, Sennheiser, Wisycom)
Earthworks SR40V is a hypercardioid mic that has an extended frequency response up to 40khz. Earthworks states that the SR40v’s extreme accuracy in the time domain provides clean reproduction free of distortion and smearing.
Neumann’s KMS 105 has a supercardioid pattern and a transformerless circuit design.
A 120hz high pass filter is employed to help reduce proximity effect, while a thick-walled metal housing and a hardened steel grill provide protection from stage abuse.
The KSM9 from Shure features a dual diaphragm design that allows you to switch between a cardioid or supercardioid polar pattern. Shure states that their advanced suspension system isolates the mic element from vibrations and handling noise.

Hello this is Matt from the Sonic Sense Resource Center.
Right now we’re gonna check out Neumann’s new TLM107 large diaphragm condenser microphone, and compare it with AKG’s C414XLII, and the Kiwi from Blue.
This is just a small sample of the many mics you can listen to at the SSRC.
We’ll hear each mic on a variety of sources, with even more audio samples available at the Sonic Sense Resource Center.
Before we hear them, let’s take a quick look at each mic.
Neumann’s new TLM107 is the latest model to join their transformerless microphone family. While we all know of Neumann’s legacy, this should not be considered a “retro� or “nostalgia� mic. The TLM107 features a brand new capsule, designed exclusively for this microphone, and an innovative “navigation� switch that controls polar pattern, filter, and attenuation settings.
AKG’s C414 has gone through a lot of changes since it’s introduction in 1971.
Today there are two versions of the C414 available and we’ll be focusing on the XLII for this comparison. Samples of the XLS are also available at the Sonic Sense Resource Center.
The XL-II is basically an update of 1993’s TL- II, featuring lower self-noise, higher output, and the addition of an LED polar-pattern indicator. The once-noisy polar pattern switch has also been improved to provide silent switching.
And finally the Kiwi from Blue Microphones. The massive Kiwi is Blue’s flagship solid state mic. 9 polar patterns are available, and as with all Blue mics, pads and Hi-Pass filters are
rejected in favor of an ultra-pure signal path between the capsule and the microphone circuit.

Both are considered founders of computer science.

Hello, Matt here from the Sonic Sense Resource Center. Much to the delight of musicians and microphone enthusiasts everywhere, Neumann has resumed production of the legendary U47 FET microphone. Built to the original production documents and schematics, this is not merely a tribute, but the real deal. While it should not be confused as an attempt to re-create the legendary U47 Tube, you can compare it in the Sonic Sense Resource Center.
In it’s first incarnation, the U47 FET was embraced for its ability to handle very loud sources and was often relegated to use in front of kick drums and loud guitar cabinets. However, it’s versatility at capturing everything from a high SPL source to a gentle acoustic guitar passage, has sometimes been overlooked.
Right now, we’re gonna compare the NEW U47 FET with three other Neumann mics including thevenerable U87ai, the TLM 67 and the M 147 Tube on a variety of sources to test their versatility. Please leave the annotations on for optimal functionality.

For decades Neumann mics have been a studio standard for critical vocal reproduction, so let’s start by hearing how each mic captures a powerful female vocalist. All vocals were recorded without any EQ, compression, high pass filters, or pop screens, directly into a Grace Design preamp and Benchmark A to D converters.

In addition to being an esteemed vocal mic, the U47 fet also enjoys a reputation as the standard as a front of kick drum mic. Let’s hear how each mic fares in this high volume application.
The mics were all placed in the same position, 6 inches from the front head of a booming Yamaha Oak Custom 22� kick drum. All drum mics went through a Toft Series ATB console with no EQ or compression with A-to-D conversion handled by an Apollo 16 from Universal Audio.

Let’s wrap up with some guitar samples. We put each of these mics in front of an acoustic guitar and a screaming tube amppushing 100 dB at the microphone position All guitars were captured through the Grace preamp and Benchmark converters.
First, the acoustic. For this test we kept each mic 7 inches from the fret board at the neck-joint position of the instrument.

And now the electric. Mics were placed with the capsules 5� from the grille cloth, and routed through the Grace/Benchmark signal chain/path
