ROAR is an online magazine and quarterly print journal of the radical imagination, providing grassroots perspectives from the front-lines of the global struggle for real democracy.
The world-system is in crisis. Global capitalism and liberal democracy are crumbling all around us. Now more than ever, we need engaged research, subversive commentary and critical analysis to help make sense of our tumultuous times and stave off the coming global catastrophe.
As an activist-run journal of the radical imagination, we consider it our mission to contribute to that collective effort.
ROAR was founded by scholar-activist Jerome Roos in 2011 to provide theoretically-informed analysis of the global financial crisis and the popular mobilizations that emerged in its wake. In 2013, political analyst Joris Leverink joined the editorial team. Two years later, we launched our current website and quarterly print journal.

ROAR is published by the Foundation for Autonomous Media and Research, an independent non-profit organization registered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. All editors and board members are volunteers. This allows us to spend all income from subscriptions on sustaining and expanding our publishing project. Once we have paid for printing, distribution and basic running costs like web hosting, the remaining proceeds of your subscription will be invested in high-quality content, design and illustration for future issues.
In 2014, we raised about $10,000 in a crowdfunding campaign and we received a starting grant to complete our new website from the Foundation for Democracy and Media in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Other than that we do not have any regular sources of income apart from our subscribers.
ROAR is not just a magazine -- it is a multimedia loudspeaker for the movements and an intellectual breeding ground for revolutionary ideas. When you subscribe you will not just receive the freshest and raddest rag out there in your mailbox every three months, but you will also help sustain a unique self-managed publishing project -- strengthening the voices of activists around the world.
