Hastings is a town and borough in the county of East Sussex, within the historic county of Sussex, on the south coast of England. The town is located 24 mi (39 km) east of the county town of Lewes and 53 mi (85 km) south east of London, and has an estimated population of 90,254, which makes it the 66th largest settlement in the United Kingdom.
Historically Hastings can claim fame through its connection with the Norman conquest of England and because it became one of the medieval Cinque Ports. Hastings was, for centuries, an important fishing port; although nowadays less important, it still has the largest beach-based fishing fleet in Europe.The town became a popular spot for 'taking the waters' (therapeutic bathing in the sea) in the 1760s, and then, with the coming of the railway, a seaside resort.
One of the greatest battles in English and European history. Duke William the Bastard lands near Pevensey, Sussex and starts the Norman Conquest of England. Video covers the events leading to the clash between English and Norman forces some kilometres west of Hastings.

The Battle of Hastings qualifying event went down yesterday and it was absolutely mental. 44 of BMX's top riders competing in the world's largest underground skatepark (Source BMX) in a unique contest format that consists of 11 teams of 4 riders each, plus a video segment where each team picks two riders to film for one hour in a separate plaza. The plaza videos premieres last night and let me tell you, you are not ready. For now enjoy this condensed version of the "Best Tricks" that everyone took at the end of their runs, plus a few other select highlights from the day. Look for an extended cut of Qualifying / Best Trick dropping soon.

History
Early history
The first mention of Hastings is found in the late 8th century in the form Hastingas. This is derived from the Old English tribal name Hæstingas, meaning `the constituency/followers of Hæsta'. Symeon of Durham records the victory of Offa in 771 over the Hestingorum gens, that is, "the people of the Hastings tribe.", Hastingleigh in Kent was named after that tribe. The place name Hæstingaceaster is found in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle entry for 1050, and may be an alternative name for Hastings. However, the absence of any archaeological remains of or documentary evidence for a Roman fort at Hastings suggest that Hæstingaceaster may refer to a different settlement, most likely that based on the Roman remains at Pevensey.

Battle of Hastings
Coordinates: 50°54′43″N 0°29′15″E / 50.91194°N 0.48750°E / 50.91194; 0.48750
The Battle of Hastings was fought on 14 October 1066 between the Norman-French army of Duke William II of Normandy and an English army under the Anglo-Saxon King Harold Godwinson, beginning the Norman conquest of England. It took place approximately 7 miles (11 kilometres) northwest of Hastings, close to the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex, and was a decisive Norman victory.
The background to the battle was the death of the childless King Edward the Confessor in January 1066, which set up a succession struggle between several claimants to his throne. Harold was crowned king shortly after Edward's death, but faced invasions by William, his own brother Tostig and the Norwegian King Harald Hardrada (Harold III of Norway). Hardrada and Tostig defeated a hastily gathered army of Englishmen at the Battle of Fulford on 20 September 1066, and were in turn defeated by Harold at the Battle of Stamford Bridge five days later. The deaths of Tostig and Hardrada at Stamford left William as Harold's only serious opponent. While Harold and his forces were recovering from Stamford, William landed his invasion forces in the south of England at Pevensey on 28 September 1066 and established a beachhead for his conquest of the kingdom. Harold was forced to march south swiftly, gathering forces as he went.

East Sussex
East Sussex /ˈsʌsᵻks/ is a county in South East England. It is bordered by the counties of Kent to the north and east, Surrey to the north west and West Sussex to the west, and to the south by the English Channel.
History
East Sussex is part of the historic county of Sussex, which has its roots in the ancient kingdom of the South Saxons, who established themselves there in the 5th century AD, after the departure of the Romans. Archaeological remains are plentiful, especially in the upland areas. The area's position on the coast has also meant that there were many invaders, including the Romans and later the Normans. Earlier industries have included fishing, iron-making, and the wool trade, all of which have declined, or been lost completely.
Governance
Sussex is traditionally divided into six sub-divisions known as rapes. From the 12th century the three eastern rapes and the three western rapes each had separate quarter sessions, with the county town of the three eastern rapes being Lewes. This situation was formalised by Parliament in 1865, and the two parts were made into administrative counties, each with distinct elected county councils in 1889 under the Local Government Act 1888. In East Sussex there were also three self-administered county boroughs: Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings.

Crowhurst newlywed Tofi and his farmer friend Leofric are torn from their Sussex homes by the English warrior Ordgar and summoned to defend the English coast from invasion. The Battle of Hastings qualifying event went down yesterday and it was absolutely mental. 44 of BMX's top riders competing in the world's largest underground skatepark (Source BMX) in a unique contest format that consists of 11 teams of 4 riders each, plus a video segment where each team picks two riders to film for one hour in a separate plaza. The plaza videos premieres last night and let me tell you, you are not ready. For now enjoy this condensed version of the "Best Tricks" that everyone took at the end of their runs, plus a few other select highlights from the day. Look for an extended cut of Qualifying / Best Trick dropping soon.

Crowhurst newlywed Tofi and his farmer friend Leofric are torn from their Sussex homes by the English warrior Ordgar and summoned to defend the English coast from invasion. But while the army of King Harold waits in the south, fierce Vikings set sail from the fjords of the north.
The Vikings land in Cleveland - and annihilate the men of Yorkshire at the Battle of Fulford. Hearing of this surprise invasion, our English fighters are ordered to march 280 miles north to repel the invaders. After an epic trek they meet the Vikings at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. But the Vikings have divided their force - and the English triumph.
It's the end of the Viking age, and Ordgar, Tofi and Leofric have survived. But news soon reaches them that the Normans have landed in Sussex. Their own homes are under attack, so they must run all the way south again to save all that they love.

A Young Person's Guide to the Battle of Hastings
Here's a quick film I made for one of my kid's class (8 - 10 year olds). They were studying the middle ages this term and the call went out to parents to come in and give a little talk to the class, and I thought this would be more entertaining than some middle-aged git rambling on about history to them. Hastings is a town on England’s southeast coast. It's known for the 1066 Battle of Hastings, fought on a nearby field where Battle Abbey now stands. The Norman ruins of Hastings Castle, once home to William the Conqueror, overlook the English Channel. East along the shingle seafront of Stade beach, Hastings Fishermen’s Museum and Shipwreck Museum document maritime history. The Jerwood Gallery shows contemporary art.
Hastings is a town and borough in East Sussex on the south coast of England, 24 mi (39 km) east of the county town of Lewes and 53 mi (85 km) south east of London. Hastings gives its name to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It later became one of the medieval Cinque Ports. The town became a popular seaside resort in the 19th century with the coming of the railway. Hastings is a fishing port with a beach-based fishing fleet.
Some of the areas and suburbs of Hastings are Ore Valley, St Leonards, Silverhill, West St Leonards, and Hollington. Ore, Silverhill and Hollington were once villages that have since become part of the Hastings conurbation area during rapid growth. Hastings has four rail links: two to London, one to Brighton and one to Ashford. Of the London lines, the shorter is the Hastings Line, the former South Eastern Railway (SER) route to Charing Cross via Battle and Tunbridge Wells, which opened in 1852; and the longer is the East Coastway Line, the former London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) route to Victoria via Bexhill, Eastbourne and Lewes.
Hastings Castle was built in 1070 by the Normans, four years after the Norman invasion. It is located on the West Hill, overlooking the town centre and is a Grade I listed building. Little remains of the castle apart from the arch left from the chapel, part of the walls and dungeons. The nearby St. Clements Caves are home to the Smugglers Adventure, which features interactive displays relating to the history of smuggling on the south coast of England.

Places to see in ( Hastings - UK )
Hastings is a town on England’s southeast coast. It's known for the 1066 Battle of Hastings, fought on a nearby field where Battle Abbey now stands. The Norman ruins of Hastings Castle, once home to William the Conqueror, overlook the English Channel. East along the shingle seafront of Stade beach, Hastings Fishermen’s Museum and Shipwreck Museum document maritime history. The Jerwood Gallery shows contemporary art.
Hastings is a town and borough in East Sussex on the south coast of England, 24 mi (39 km) east of the county town of Lewes and 53 mi (85 km) south east of London. Hastings gives its name to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It later became one of the medieval Cinque Ports. The town became a popular seaside resort in the 19th century with the coming of the railway. Hastings is a fishing port with a beach-based fishing fleet.
Some of the areas and suburbs of Hastings are Ore Valley, St Leonards, Silverhill, West St Leonards, and Hollington. Ore, Silverhill and Hollington were once villages that have since become part of the Hastings conurbation area during rapid growth. Hastings has four rail links: two to London, one to Brighton and one to Ashford. Of the London lines, the shorter is the Hastings Line, the former South Eastern Railway (SER) route to Charing Cross via Battle and Tunbridge Wells, which opened in 1852; and the longer is the East Coastway Line, the former London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) route to Victoria via Bexhill, Eastbourne and Lewes.
Hastings Castle was built in 1070 by the Normans, four years after the Norman invasion. It is located on the West Hill, overlooking the town centre and is a Grade I listed building. Little remains of the castle apart from the arch left from the chapel, part of the walls and dungeons. The nearby St. Clements Caves are home to the Smugglers Adventure, which features interactive displays relating to the history of smuggling on the south coast of England.

Here's a quick film I made for one of my kid's class (8 - 10 year olds). They were studying the middle ages this term and the call went out to parents to come in and give a little talk to the class, and I thought this would be more entertaining than some middle-aged git rambling on about history to them.
EDIT: There have been some notable complaints about some of my omissions in this video, so let me just add the following: 1) Personally, I'm more interested in the social consequences of history rather than the nuts-and-bolts details of how battles were fought, hence this isn;t the most in-depth summary of how the fight was won, sorry. 2) as several viewers have pointed out, Harold Godwinson had just forced-marched his men south after successfully seeing off the 3rd claimant to the English throne, Norse King Harold Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, and there is a very real possibility fresher troops might have carried the day. 3) Middle English is more the language of Chaucer than Shakespeare.
All things being equal, it is still extremely gratifying to read all of the positive feedback this video has garnered from young people bored to tears by dry homework texts rabbiting on about forced marches and the importance of the stirrup in revolutionising medieval warfare. For those seeking a more in-depth summation of the Battle, I heartily recommend checking out Simon Schama's excellent History of Britain series. Maybe not if you're 9, though.

Hello, I was recently commissioned to be one of the storytellers for the Storylines, Hastings event taking place on Sep 9th. This is a short snippet of me telling some of my story. The commission involved me doing a lot of research into Hastings during the 1800's. I found the period between 1860 to 1872 most interesting; during this time, the three major, long running fairs of Hastings were banned by local council and magistrates and in 1972 Hastings become the first town in the UK to built a pleasure pier. The largest and most popular of these fairs was called the Rock Fair. I looked over work by local writers and newspaper of the time to try and find out, why was the Rock Fair banned?

I was recently commissioned to be one of the storytellers for the Storylines, Hastings event taking place on Sep 9th.
This is a short snippet of me telling some of my story.
The commission involved me doing a lot of research into Hastings during the 1800's.
I found the period between 1860 to 1872 most interesting; during this time, the three major, long running fairs of Hastings were banned by local council and magistrates and in 1972 Hastings become the first town in the UK to built a pleasure pier.
The largest and most popular of these fairs was called the Rock Fair. I looked over work by local writers and newspaper of the time to try and find out, why was the Rock Fair banned?

This film I made back in the early 1990's while I worked at Hastings College of Arts and Technology, and I did all the filming at home in a converted shed in the garden which I turned into a studio, but as video tape was so delicate and prone to wear and I only had one decent master copy I vowed not to produce it until they bring out some solid state media or disc that I can copy it to and use as a master to which people,even video technicians told me that will not happen and even if it was remotely possible it would take many years to perfect, to which I replied well I don't think it will be long and they laughed, but I was right in only a few years out came the DVD then I was able to make masters that did not degrade from the original tape which in those days was poor enough anyway. so e...

Vehicles: Austin Allegro, Vauxhall Viva, the "NEW" Ford Escort MK4 with modern 5 speed gearbox and heated rear window.

Crowhurst newlywed Tofi and his farmer friend Leofric are torn from their Sussex homes by the English warrior Ordgar and summoned to defend the English coast from invasion. But while the army of King Harold waits in the south, fierce Vikings set sail from the fjords of the north.
The Vikings land in Cleveland - and annihilate the men of Yorkshire at the Battle of Fulford. Hearing of this surprise invasion, our English fighters are ordered to march 280 miles north to repel the invaders. After an epic trek they meet the Vikings at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. But the Vikings have divided their force - and the English triumph.
It's the end of the Viking age, and Ordgar, Tofi and Leofric have survived. But news soon reaches them that the Normans have landed in Sussex. Their own homes are under attack, so they must run all the way south again to save all that they love.

This film I made back in the early 1990's while I worked at Hastings College of Arts and Technology, and I did all the filming at home in a converted shed in the garden which I turned into a studio, but as video tape was so delicate and prone to wear and I only had one decent master copy I vowed not to produce it until they bring out some solid state media or disc that I can copy it to and use as a master to which people,even video technicians told me that will not happen and even if it was remotely possible it would take many years to perfect, to which I replied well I don't think it will be long and they laughed, but I was right in only a few years out came the DVD then I was able to make masters that did not degrade from the original tape which in those days was poor enough anyway. so enjoy. yours Mike Wells.

Doch die von ihrer Mutter dauergestresste Teenagerin und ihres Zeichens Hobbydetektivin Roberta wittert ein krummes Ding und verdächtigt die Geschäftspartner der Detektive, nicht astrein zu sein. Zu allem Überfluss verschwindet der Hotelstammgast Shibble, ein Archäologe, und vor dem Hotel treibt ein Mönch sein Unwesen. Here is part one (of two) of an excellent, professionally produced, documentary film about the Hastings to Ashford railway sometimes called the "Marshlink" made by BCL films of Hastings in 1987.
Here is an extract from the notes on the original video cassette box:
This is a detailed film of the Hastings to Ashford line, including the Dungeness branch, and a look at what remains of the Rye Harbour branch. From Hastings the line runs alongside the Fairlight Hills through the Sussex Weald. On through the halts of Three Oaks and Doleham it continues along the valley of the River Brede, exploring the long closed halt at Snailham before reaching Winchelsea and crossing the River Tillingham into Rye. At Rye the film makes a detour to explore the Rye Harbour branch. Leaving Rye across the River Rother the scenery changes as the line crosses the edge of Romney Marsh. Arriving at Appledore the film again makes a detour, this time onto the Dungeness branch, and the nuclear flask train at the power station. After Appledore the line crosses the Royal Military Canal near Warehorne before arriving in Ham Street. From Ham Street the line runs up through a dip in the hills to arrive in Ashford past the old railway works at Chart Leacon.
Part two (separate upload) shews mainly a round trip over the line on board Hastings DEMU No. 203 001 (formerly No. 1011): it also shews some of the many variations of DEMU formation in use on the "Marshlink" in the late 1980s.
This film is copyright to BCL films and shewn here without permission BUT, as far as I can tell, BCL films no longer exists (cannot be found on the internet) and, as far as I know, this footage is not available to be purchased or seen either via the internet or locally. Therefore, I beseech the forbearance of the copyright holders - the tape that I have (VHS video cassette) is deteriorating and if I don't digitise it now it will not be possible to watch it for much longer. My only objective in posting this here is that I and other people who share this interest can continue to see this historic footage in the future.

On through the halts of Three Oaks and Doleham it continues along the valley of the River Brede, exploring the long closed halt at Snailham before reaching Winchelsea and crossing the River Tillingham into Rye. At Rye the film makes a detour to explore the Rye Harbour branch. Leaving Rye across the River Rother the scenery changes as the line crosses the edge of Romney Marsh. Arriving at Appledore the film again makes a detour, this time onto the Dungeness branch, and the nuclear flask train at the power station. After Appledore the line crosses the Royal Military Canal near Warehorne before arriving in Ham Street. From Ham Street the line runs up through a dip in the hills to arrive in Ashford past the old railway works at Chart Leacon.
Part two (separate upload) shews mainly a round trip over the line on board Hastings DEMU No. 203 001 (formerly No. 1011): it also shews some of the many variations of DEMU formation in use on the "Marshlink" in the late 1980s.
This film is copyright to BCL films and shewn here without permission BUT, as far as I can tell, BCL films no longer exists (cannot be found on the internet) and, as far as I know, this footage is not available to be purchased or seen either via the internet or locally. Therefore, I beseech the forbearance of the copyright holders - the tape that I have (VHS video cassette) is deteriorating and if I don't digitise it now it will not be possible to watch it for much longer. My only objective in posting this here is that I and other people who share this interest can continue to see this historic footage in the future.
