The human genome project and the study of the genetic markers contained within DNA have brought to light the story of man’s origins and his journey across the planet. This National Geographic documentary follows Dr Spencer Wells as he retraces that incredible journey. 39:6 He has created you [all] out of one living entity, and out of it fashioned its mate; and he has bestowed upon you four kinds of cattle of either sex; [and] He creates you in your mothers' wombs, one act of creation after another, in threefold depths of darkness. Human consciousness arose out of the darkness of non-existence in three distinct stages - three levels of awareness built one upon another. In the waters of the early earth elements formed into amino acids, proteins, strands of DNA, and the protoplasm of the first living cell awoke, replicated and multiplied. These single-celled organisms eventually formed symbiotic relationships and complex multi-cellular organisms awoke, divided into male and female component parts, and multiplied. Generation after generation gave birth to ever greater complexity bringing forth the fully formed human figure which, some 50,000 years ago, awoke with the power of articulate, conceptual thought, and multiplied. Alongside enabling man to utilize the natural resources of his earthly environment - allowing him to clothe, feed, house, transport and entertain himself - human consciousness also enables him to attain to faith, to a belief in the unseen based upon observable natural phenomena. From the early animism of primitive man to the modern monotheistic concept of an all-embracing, universal Creative Will - man's spiritual consciousness has grown side by side with his material advancement over the generations. 71:13 "What is amiss with you that you cannot look forward to God's majesty, (14) seeing that He has created [every one of] you in successive stages? 71:15 "Do you not see how God has created seven heavens in full harmony with one another, (16) and has set up within them the moon as a light [reflected] and set up the sun as a [radiant] lamp? 71:17 "And God has caused you to grow out of the earth in [gradual] growth; and thereafter He will return you to it [in death]: (18) and then He will bring you forth [from it] in resurrection." Man's creation "out of the earth" comes about in two ways. Firstly, there is the physical evolution, the "gradual growth", of the human species out of more primitive biological organisms over time. And then there is our own individual creation out of earthly nutrients transmuted into reproductive cells - the formation of the fertilized female ovum - and then the embryological development "in successive stages" of a new, self-contained, human entity. 23:12 NOW, INDEED, We create man out of the essence of clay, (13) and then We cause him to remain as a drop of sperm in [the womb's] firm keeping, (14) and then We create out of the drop of sperm a germ-cell, and then We create out of the germ-cell an embryonic lump, and then We create within the embryonic lump bones, and then We clothe the bones with flesh - and then We bring [all] this into being as a new creation: hallowed, therefore, is God, the best of artisans! The frequent Quranic references to man's being "created out of dust" or "out of the essence of clay" point to the fact that his body is composed of various substances found within the earth - thus stressing man's humble biological origins and hence the debt of gratitude which he owes to God for having endowed him with life. The past tense in verses 12-14, "We have created" and "We have caused him to remain", emphasizes the fact that evolutionary development through the generations occurs in accordance with God's plan of creation. 2:213 ALL MANKIND were once one single community; [then they began to differ] - whereupon God raised up the prophets as heralds of glad tidings and as warner's, and through them bestowed revelation from on high, setting forth the truth, so that it might decide between people with regard to all on which they had come to hold divergent views. The Quran does not propound, as may appear at first glance, the idea of a mythical "golden age" obtaining at the dawn of human history. This ummah wahidah ("one single community") alludes to the relative homogeneity of man's primitive social order. Since that homogeneity was based on a lack of intellectual differentiation rather than on a conscious agreement among the members of early society, it was bound to disintegrate with man's intellectual development. As man's thought-life became ever more complex, his emotional capacity and his individual needs too, became more differentiated: conflicts of views and interests arose, humanity ceased to be "one single community" - and it was at this stage that divine guidance became necessary. As such, man's interactions and dissentions are not accidental happenings of history but are in fact an integral part of God's plan for human development.
