List of Test cricket grounds

This is a list of Test cricket grounds.

One hundred and eight grounds have hosted Test cricket since the first officially recognised Test match between Australia and England in Melbourne in March 1877. The grounds are listed in the order in which they were first used as a venue for Test cricket. The list excludes World Series Cricket and South African rebel tours venues.

On 8 July 2009, the SWALEC Stadium (previously known as Sophia Gardens) in Cardiff became the 100th Test venue.

Test cricket grounds

^1 – 22 Tests from 1896 to 1939; not used for first-class cricket since 1946; redeveloped as Johannesburg Railway Station.
^2 – Staged only one Test; not used for cricket since 1973; home ground of Sheffield United F.C.
^3 – 4 Tests from 1910 to 1921; not used for first-class cricket since 1922; demolished.
^4 – Staged two Tests, one in 1928 and the other in 1931; not used for first-class cricket since 1931.
^5 – 6 Tests from 1948 to 1954; not used for first-class cricket since 1956; now used only for rugby union.
^6 – First used by Pakistan for 8 Tests, later for 9 Tests by Bangladesh, including the inaugural home Test for both sides, on 1 January 1955 and 10 November 2000 respectively. Used exclusively for football since March 2005.
^7 – Staged only one Test in 1992; subsequent Tests in Bulawayo played at the Queens Sports Club.
^8 – 4 Tests in 2002. ^9 – Hosted the first Day-Night Test match on 27 November 2015.

Cricket

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players each on a field at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard-long pitch. The game is played by 120 million players in many countries, making it the world's second most popular sport. Each team takes its turn to bat, attempting to score runs, while the other team fields. Each turn is known as an innings (used for both singular and plural).

The bowler delivers the ball to the batsman who attempts to hit the ball with his bat away from the fielders so he can run to the other end of the pitch and score a run. Each batsman continues batting until he is out. The batting team continues batting until ten batsmen are out, or a specified number of overs of six balls have been bowled, at which point the teams switch roles and the fielding team comes in to bat.

In professional cricket, the length of a game ranges from 20 overs (T20) per side to Test cricket played over five days. The Laws of Cricket are maintained by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) with additional Standard Playing Conditions for Test matches and One Day Internationals.

International Cricket Stadium

International Cricket Stadium or Jay Kaylon Ground is a cricket ground in Kota, Rajasthan. The ground as established in 1974 with name of Municipal Stadium. The ground regularly hosts Ranji matches for Rajasthan cricket team. Tiil date the ground has hosted six first-class matches and a List A match between Wills XI and Uttar Pradesh cricket team.

In 2006, Government of Rajasthan made and cleared the proposals to upgrade ground into international cricket venue in the city as sum a Rs 18.59 crore cleared for proposal which include built the pavilion and playing field to international standards.

Stadium

A stadium (plural stadiums or stadia) is a place or venue for (mostly) outdoor sports, concerts, or other events and consists of a field or stage either partly or completely surrounded by a tiered structure designed to allow spectators to stand or sit and view the event.

Pausanias noted that for about half a century the only event at the ancient Greek Olympic festival was the race that comprised one length of the stade at Olympia, where the word "stadium" originated.

Etymology

"Stadium" is the Latin form of the Greek word "stadion" (στάδιον), a measure of length equalling the length of 600 human feet. As feet are of variable length the exact length of a stadion depends on the exact length adopted for 1 foot at a given place and time. Although in modern terms 1 stadion = 600 ft (180 m), in a given historical context it may actually signify a length up to 15% larger or smaller.

The equivalent Roman measure, the stadium, had a similar length — about 185 m (607 ft) - but instead of being defined in feet was defined using the Roman standard passus to be a distance of 125 passūs (double-paces).

International Cricket

International Cricket is a cricket video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System that was only released in Australia in 1992. Developed by Melbourne-based Beam Software, it was the only cricket game released for the NES. Aussie Rules Footy shares the same presentation style as this game.

There were no attempts to release a cricket video game to the North American, Japanese, or European markets. The reason is that baseball games dominated the North American and Japanese markets while soccer dominated the European market during that era. Two buttons are used to control the action; one for hitting the cricket ball while the other allows the player to slog around.

One of the shortcomings in the game is the simple AI; the average player can bowl the computer out for totals not exceeding 20. Some of the other poor features in the game are the unrealistically green grass and the uninspired music found in the menu screens.

Naming parodies

The game featured all the major Test cricket playing nations but no official team and player licensing in place. This meant that player names within the game, particularly for the Australian team, were parodies on the actual names of cricket players at the time.
