Chitral National Park is one of the national parks of Pakistan. It is located in Chitral District in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan beside the Chitral River, at a distance of two hours drive from Chitral city. The park is also known as Chitral Gol National Park. The word Gol in the local language means 'round. Up until 1983, Chitral Gol was considered to be the private property of His Highness the Mehtar of Chitral. The status of the park has been in dispute since and has become the issue of ongoing litigation between His Highness and the Government of Pakistan. The most recent decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan has been that the park in its entirety is the personal property of His Highness. The way leading to the park is quite narrow and dangerous, yet more risky during the rainy days. It is located between 1450 metres and about 5000 metres above sea level. It has an area of 77.5 square kilometres.This park includes three valleys. Several glaciers also lie in the park through which several springs make their way and ultimately form a stream of 18 metres. The cold water of this stream falls towards the east into the Chitral River. The park is rich in trees particularly Cedar trees. This park also serves to provide shelter to a vast diversity of animals especially Markhor, an endangered wild goat species.[1] The subspecies, which occurs in the Park is the Astor markhor. Despite a decline from over 500 to only around 200 individuals in the park during the 1980s, Chitral National Park still holds the largest population of the Astor Markhor in the world.[2] Also present in the park in small numbers are the Siberian ibex and Ladakh urial, as well as the Asian black bear. The snow leopard does not appear to be resident in the park, but is sometimes seen there. The Tibetan wolf, red fox, yellow-throated marten and Himalayan otter are all found in the park. Common birds in the park include, the bearded vulture, the Himalayan vulture, the golden eagle, the demoiselle crane, the peregrine falcon, the Himalayan snowcock, the Himalayan monal, the snow partridge and the rock partridge.The annual rainfall in its region is estimated to be 462 mL[clarification needed]. In September it rains more on the spectacular peaks surrounding the park. However, in November the rainfall is more in the valleys and on the lower peaks. There is also snowfall during the winter season. The snow-covered white peaks enhance the beauty till June. The general weather is cold and dry. The temperature ranges from -12.2 to 43.3 °C.

Flood In District Chitral
300,000 Stranded by Floods in Chitral, Pakistan
The flood situation in Chitral district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan has now left almost 300,000 cut off,
according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
An official update from yesterday, 21 July, says that a further victim has been reported, bringing the death toll
to 3 people. However, the exact number of fatalities cannot be ascertained due to inaccessibility of different
affected areas. All three fatalities occurred in Broze, Chitral, after buildings collapsed.
Further damage assessments say that over 50 houses have been severely damaged and 100 houses completely
destroyed, as well as at least 10 bridges and numerous roads. Water supply has been damaged or cut off in
Broze, Orghuch, Ushusht, Nisur Gol and Mastuj.
Glacial Lake Outburst Floods
Officials say that the current situation was caused by “Glacial Lake Outburst Floods” after unusually heavy rain
fell on 15 and 16 July, and again on 19 July, 2015.
PDMA say that the Glacial Lake Outburst Floods caused “massive torrents and flash floods, washing away
villages, access roads, bridges, drinking water supply systems, buildings and agricultural crops”. They added:
In a statement made earlier this month, Pakistan Federal Minister for Climate Change, Senator Mushahidullah
Khan, expressed serious concern over the flood threat faced northern areas of Pakistan.
The Pakistan Army continued rescue operations on the 6th consecutive day in the worst flood hit areas of
Chitral where Army and Frontier Corps with the help of civil administration distributed 16 tons of ration.
Meanwhile troops evacuated more than 73 stranded individuals from Garm Chashma, Koragh and Bomboreet
to safer places. Pakistan Army has placed two dedicated MI-17 helicopters in Chitral for the relief and rescue
operation.
PDMA transported 20 tonnes (500 Packages) of food items to the district yesterday, with a further 20 tonnes
expected to arrive in 2 days. Tents, blankets and other non-food items have already been distributed.
Prime Minister’s Visit Postponed
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of life and property due
to floods in Chitral. He intended to visit the flood affected areas in Chitral but the visit was postponed due to
bad weather conditions.
In a statement yesterday, the Prime Minister said that he has instructed Pakistan’s National disaster
Management Agency (NDMA) to reinforce relief and rescue efforts in coordination with PDMA and other
concerned departments. He also directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to keep N-45 open so that
Chitral remains linked with the national road network.
Heavy rain over the past week has caused flash floods and triggered rivers and lakes to overflow in Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces of Pakistan.
The worst hit area is the district of Chitral in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the Provincial Disaster
Management (PDMA) report that at least 2 people have died in the flooding. Local media in Pakistan say that
around 200,000 people have been affected.

Chitral
Chitral (Urdu: چترال, Khowar: چھترار), also spelled Chetrar, translated as field, is the capital of the Chitral District, situated on the western bank of the Chitral River (also called Kunar River), Now in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It also served as the capital of the princely state of Chitral until 1969. The town is at the foot of Tirich Mir, the highest peak of the Hindu Kush, which is 25,289 ft (7,708 m) high. It has a population of 20,000. The elevation of the valley is 3,700 ft (1,100 m).
History
The entire region that now forms the Chitral District was a fully independent monarchy until 1895, when the British negotiated a subsidiary alliance with its hereditary ruler, the Mehtar, under which Chitral became a princely state, still sovereign but subject to the suzerainty of the British Raj. Chitral retained a similar status even after its accession to Pakistan in 1969, but was completely incorporated into Pakistan and became an administrative district of Pakistan in 1969.
Nothing definitive is recorded about the town's first settlers. In the 3rd century, Kanishka, the Buddhist ruler of the Kushan empire, occupied Chitral. In the 4th century, the Chinese overran the valley. Raees rule over Chitral began in 1320 and came to an end in the 15th century. From 1571 onwards Chitral was the dominion of the Kator Dynasty until 1969.

It is located in Chitral District in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan beside the Chitral River, at a distance of two hours drive from Chitral city. The park is also known as Chitral Gol National Park. The word Gol in the local language means 'round. Up until 1983, Chitral Gol was considered to be the private property of His Highness the Mehtar of Chitral. The status of the park has been in dispute since and has become the issue of ongoing litigation between His Highness and the Government of Pakistan. The most recent decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan has been that the park in its entirety is the personal property of His Highness. The way leading to the park is quite narrow and dangerous, yet more risky during the rainy days. It is located between 1450 metres and about 5000 metres above sea level. It has an area of 77.5 square kilometres.This park includes three valleys. Several glaciers also lie in the park through which several springs make their way and ultimately form a stream of 18 metres. The cold water of this stream falls towards the east into the Chitral River. The park is rich in trees particularly Cedar trees. This park also serves to provide shelter to a vast diversity of animals especially Markhor, an endangered wild goat species.[1] The subspecies, which occurs in the Park is the Astor markhor. Despite a decline from over 500 to only around 200 individuals in the park during the 1980s, Chitral National Park still holds the largest population of the Astor Markhor in the world.[2] Also present in the park in small numbers are the Siberian ibex and Ladakh urial, as well as the Asian black bear. The snow leopard does not appear to be resident in the park, but is sometimes seen there. The Tibetan wolf, red fox, yellow-throated marten and Himalayan otter are all found in the park. Common birds in the park include, the bearded vulture, the Himalayan vulture, the golden eagle, the demoiselle crane, the peregrine falcon, the Himalayan snowcock, the Himalayan monal, the snow partridge and the rock partridge.The annual rainfall in its region is estimated to be 462 mL[clarification needed]. In September it rains more on the spectacular peaks surrounding the park. However, in November the rainfall is more in the valleys and on the lower peaks. There is also snowfall during the winter season. The snow-covered white peaks enhance the beauty till June. The general weather is cold and dry. The temperature ranges from -12.2 to 43.3 °C.

destroyed, as well as at least 10 bridges and numerous roads. Water supply has been damaged or cut off in
Broze, Orghuch, Ushusht, Nisur Gol and Mastuj.
Glacial Lake Outburst Floods
Officials say that the current situation was caused by “Glacial Lake Outburst Floods” after unusually heavy rain
fell on 15 and 16 July, and again on 19 July, 2015.
PDMA say that the Glacial Lake Outburst Floods caused “massive torrents and flash floods, washing away
villages, access roads, bridges, drinking water supply systems, buildings and agricultural crops”. They added:
In a statement made earlier this month, Pakistan Federal Minister for Climate Change, Senator Mushahidullah
Khan, expressed serious concern over the flood threat faced northern areas of Pakistan.
The Pakistan Army continued rescue operations on the 6th consecutive day in the worst flood hit areas of
Chitral where Army and Frontier Corps with the help of civil administration distributed 16 tons of ration.
Meanwhile troops evacuated more than 73 stranded individuals from Garm Chashma, Koragh and Bomboreet
to safer places. Pakistan Army has placed two dedicated MI-17 helicopters in Chitral for the relief and rescue
operation.
PDMA transported 20 tonnes (500 Packages) of food items to the district yesterday, with a further 20 tonnes
expected to arrive in 2 days. Tents, blankets and other non-food items have already been distributed.
Prime Minister’s Visit Postponed
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of life and property due
to floods in Chitral. He intended to visit the flood affected areas in Chitral but the visit was postponed due to
bad weather conditions.
In a statement yesterday, the Prime Minister said that he has instructed Pakistan’s National disaster
Management Agency (NDMA) to reinforce relief and rescue efforts in coordination with PDMA and other
concerned departments. He also directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to keep N-45 open so that
Chitral remains linked with the national road network.
Heavy rain over the past week has caused flash floods and triggered rivers and lakes to overflow in Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces of Pakistan.
The worst hit area is the district of Chitral in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the Provincial Disaster
Management (PDMA) report that at least 2 people have died in the flooding. Local media in Pakistan say that
around 200,000 people have been affected.

Chitral retained a similar status even after its accession to Pakistan in 1969, but was completely incorporated into Pakistan and became an administrative district of Pakistan in 1969.[4]
Nothing definitive is recorded about the town's first settlers. In the 3rd century, Kanishka, the Buddhist ruler of the Kushan empire, occupied Chitral. In the 4th century, the Chinese overran the valley. Raees rule over Chitral began in 1320 and came to an end in the 15th century. From 1571 onwards Chitral was the dominion of the Kator Dynasty until 1969.[5]
The City has an average elevation of 1,500 m (4,921 ft). The easiest access to Chitral, other than by air, is from the southwest along the Kunar Valley. However the Afghan-Pakistan border (Durand Line) and cross border tensions prevent this from being used as an internal route to the rest of Pakistan. There are other routes are over high mountain passes; to the south, the 3,200-metre (10,500 ft) Lowari Pass leads 365 kilometres (227 mi) to Peshawar. In the north, the easiest route during summer runs over the 3,798-metre (12,461 ft) Broghol pass. To the east, there is a 405 kilometres (252 mi) route to Gilgit over the 3,719-metre (12,201 ft) Shandur Pass. The territory is cut off by snow from the rest of the country for up to six months a year, a problem soon to be relieved by the completion of the Lowari Tunnel.
As of July 2011, the population of the city is above 19,700.
