this week, we'll hear from one of luk thung's great sentimental balladeers, miss sunari ratchasima! hailing from nakhon ratchasima, sunari rose from local song contest champion to a national recording star. crafted for her full-bodied voice and impressive range, sunari's songs were particularly popular in the country's semi-professional café scene, where singers would invariable tackle one of her songs to prove their mettle^[1]. this 1988 cassette from sure audio finds sunari in front of a synth-driven band, backed up by a team of songwriters like chiw phichit, chonlati thanthong, kong katkamhaeng and others.. even a famous indonesian melody finds its way here. enjoy!

this week, we have a taste of spiritual lae music from achan prasit nakhonphanom. "do you know what results you receive from your various merit-makings?" asks the cover of this cassette from soemwit music, and in a series of lay sermons, achan prasit breaks it down for you. the karmic benefits of donating food & clothing to monks, ordaining as a monk yourself, helping to build a monastery, etc. are demystified for the inquiring listener, over a typical lae musical accompaniment rendered by a keyboard workstation.. enjoy!

last week, oi b.m. gave us a hint as to carlos santana's musical legacy in thailand; this week, we'll meet an even more fervent devotee.. santanoy! little-remembered today, noy thirawisan chunlamakon had contributed saxophone and harmonica to the december 1991 album wicha phae by famed phuea chiwit rockers carabao, and released his solo album on their d-day entertainment label the same month. the liner notes also list the entirety of carabao members as producers here, as well as for various instrumental credits. from my own anecdotal observations, santana seems to have had the greatest influence on thai music of any western rock-star. probably the long-time popularity of latin rhythms in the kingdom particularly helped to set the chicano legend up for success, over his more stolid rock contemporaries. as santanoy sings, he's "the thai cha-cha-cha to santana's latin soul".. enjoy!

this week we have an interesting historical curiosity: one of a series of cassettes released by oi b.m., a legend of bangkok's escort industry in the 1980s. as founder of the "sensuality bank" and godmother of hundreds, possibly thousands, of the nation's sex workers, she was influential in part for encouraging her employees to take up with their johns whenever possible, helping to launch the field of "open-ended prostitution"¹. the recordings here consist mostly of oi singing humorous lyrics, occasionally alluding to her professional life, over a synthesized backing with the occasional electric guitar lick and male back-up vocals from yai bangkruai. enjoy!

i recently had a request come in for some more music from daochai phaichit, and am happily in the position to fulfill it! miss daochai is said to have gotten her start in the suntharaphon big band (although there's some debate on that point), before striking off as a solo artist under the tutelage of songwriter sisawat pichitworakan. this cassette collects a string of her hits from the early 1970s, soft rock & soul ballads with some latin touches thrown in, many penned by the late winai runganan. enjoy!

this week, we'll hear some great later-period work from molam monruedi phromchak! hailing from ubon ratchathani, monruedi grew up idolizing stars like angkhanang khunchai & chawiwan damnoen. she began performing with her own local troupe at age 16, and was introduced to the siang siam label by molam thongkham phaengdi¹. monruedi helped to bring more locally-based styles of molam to prominence, becoming particularly known for her lam phu thai and lam tang wai. in addition to her specialties, this cassette finds her running through a wide range, including lam long, lam phloen, lam toei, lam doen, lam phuan and lam sing. enjoy!

today we remember the brilliant career of national artist chinnakon krailat, who sadly passed away this week at the age of 71. dr. chinnakon's work was some of the most successful blending of pop music with influences from thailand's broad variety of folk & art musics. after starting out as a ramwong singer in his home province of sukhothai, chinnakon was picked up by "modernized music" impresario phayong mukda, with whom he made his most famous recordings. this tape features him performing a live lamtat duel with fellow national artist mae prayun yomyiam.

memorial services for dr. chinnakon will be held at wat prasri mahathat in bang khaen from the 19th to 25th of may.

our ninth tape from cliff again features the music of udom sin's chiang mai ensemble. according to cliff, udom's group were some of the most sought-after performers for funeral music in the city, around 1990. on this recording, his ensemble is based around the salo (a three-stringed spike fiddle), the sueng (a plucked fretted lute) and what i believe to be the khlui lip mueang (a bamboo flute), with drums and cymbals supporting. enjoy, and find more from this group at cliff's site!
