Reconciliation action plan

Our commitment

ANU is contributing to the national reconciliation process and the aspirations of local Indigenous communities.

Our vision is for an Australia that provides equal chances for all, while recognising and respecting the special place, culture and contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first Australians.

We will work to further scholarly learning, research and public knowledge of Indigenous issues.

Action plan

ANU has developed its own Reconciliation Action Plan, a whole-of-institution approach to enhancing broad engagement with Indigenous education, research, employment and culture. The ANU Colleges and Divisions also have local area reconciliation action plans.

This plan is part of a national program led by Reconciliation Australia. We are proud to be part of this program, which is committed in part to closing the unacceptable gaps, in particular in socioeconomic outcomes, between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

As part of its Reconciliation Action Plan, ANU has committed to begin all public events with an acknowledgement of traditional owners or a welcome to country. The official wording for all ANU acknowledgement of country is: We acknowledge and celebrate the first Australians on whose traditional lands we meet, and pay our respects to the elders of the Ngunnawal people past and present.

Sensitive warning

ANU recognises that to some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, it is distressing to show images of people who have died.

We would like to advise that our websites may contain such images.
