France (French: [fʁɑ̃s]), officially the French Republic (French: République française [ʁepyblik fʁɑ̃sɛz]), is a sovereign state comprising territory in western Europe and several overseas regions and territories. The European part of France, called metropolitan France, extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. France spans 643,801 square kilometres (248,573 sq mi) and has a total population of 66.6 million. It is a unitary semi-presidential republic with the capital in Paris, the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre. The Constitution of France establishes the state as secular and democratic, with its sovereignty derived from the people.
During the Iron Age, what is now Metropolitan France was inhabited by the Gauls, a Celtic people. The Gauls were conquered in 51 BC by the Roman Empire, which held Gaul until 486. The Gallo-Romans faced raids and migration from the Germanic Franks, who dominated the region for hundreds of years, eventually creating the medieval Kingdom of France. France emerged as a major European power in the Late Middle Ages, with its victory in the Hundred Years' War (1337 to 1453) strengthening French state-building and paving the way for a future centralized absolute monarchy. During the Renaissance, France experienced a vast cultural development and established the beginning of a global colonial empire. The 16th century was dominated by religious civil wars between Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots).
Southern France or the south of France, colloquially known as le Midi, is a defined geographical area consisting of the regions of France that border the Atlantic Ocean south of the Marais Poitevin,Spain, the Mediterranean, and Italy. The Midi includes:
This area corresponds in large part to Occitania, the territory in which Occitan (French: langue d'oc) — as distinct from the langues d'oïl of northern France — was historically the dominant language. Though part of Occitania, the regions of Auvergne and Limousin are not normally considered part of the south of France.
The term Midi derives from mi (middle) and di (day) in Old French, comparable to the term Mezzogiorno from the south of Italy. The time of midday was synonymous with the direction of south because in France, as in all of the Northern Hemisphere north of the Tropic of Cancer, the sun is in the south at noon. The synonymy existed in Middle French as well, where meridien can refer to both midday and south.
A building or edifice is a structure with a roof and walls standing more or less permanently in one place, such as a house or factory. Buildings come in a variety of shapes, sizes and functions, and have been adapted throughout history for a wide number of factors, from building materials available, to weather conditions, to land prices, ground conditions, specific uses and aesthetic reasons. To better understand the term building compare the list of nonbuilding structures.
Buildings serve several needs of society – primarily as shelter from weather, security, living space, privacy, to store belongings, and to comfortably live and work. A building as a shelter represents a physical division of the human habitat (a place of comfort and safety) and the outside (a place that at times may be harsh and harmful).
Ever since the first cave paintings, buildings have also become objects or canvasess of artistic expression. In recent years, interest in sustainable planning and building practices has also become an intentional part of the design process of many new buildings.

We continue our series "Construction project in Southern France". Follow us on www.sea-view-home.com Southern France means plenty of Sun, friendly people, good infrastructure and personal safety. It is easier to build a house in France than in many less developed countries, including Eastern Europe and former Yugoslavia. You may have heard stories about some strict rules - but in our experience, rules are reasonable, and you do not need to speak French to understand them and to comply with them.

This week, Michael from Tiny House Living is showing us around in their Tiny House model here in Denmark. It's a a 194 sq ft tiny house with 108 sq ft of loft space. On the ground floor is the kitchen, the bathroom and a fold out table, as well as a couch area for relaxation. The master bedroom is on of the lofts, and the lounge area is on the other one. The layout is great and it feel spacious; the ceiling is high and there's lots of storage spaces throughout the house. We had a chat with Michael about all the rules and regulations there are in Denmark when building houses, and it's great to keep these things in mind when you're considering getting a tiny house. However, the regulations are changing because the politicians here in Denmark are starting to see the possibilities with tiny ...

This is the sixth episode of BBC's Restoration Home, a brilliant program on the saving of 'At Risk' buildings with significant heritage. -I own nothing of the content of this film, it belongs to the BBC. I have uploaded this for education.

Travel video about destination Marseille in France. Marseille is the most important city in Provence and is situated on the south coast of France. The most impressive religious building in Marseille is a fortified monastery church that dates back to the 5th century, the mighty Abbaye Saint-Victor. Deep down in the rock is an Early Christian crypt and a number of stone sarcophaguses that contain the remains of various holy martyrs that date back to the Roman persecution of the Christians.
