The Canberra Raiders are an Australian professional rugby league football club based in the national capital city of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. They have competed in Australasia's elite rugby league competition, the National Rugby League (NRL) premiership since 1982. Over this period the club has won 3 premierships, (out of 5 Grand Finals played), received 1 wooden spoon and had a total of 15 of its players (9 New South Wales Blues and 6 Queensland Maroons) selected to don the green and gold for Australia. The Raiders' current home ground is Canberra Stadium in Bruce. Previously, the team played home matches at Seiffert Oval in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, with the move to Canberra Stadium taking place in 1990. The official symbol for the Canberra Raiders is the Viking. The Viking, also a mascot at Raiders' games, is known as Victor the Viking.
Jordan Rapana (born 15 August 1989) is a New Zealand professional rugby league footballer who currently plays for the Canberra Raiders in the National Rugby League. He plays at wing and fullback and previously played for the Gold Coast Titans.
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Rapana is of Cook Islander and Māori descent and moved to the Gold Coast, Queensland as a 10-year-old, playing his junior football for the Tugun Seahawks, before being signed by the Gold Coast Titans. He attended Palm Beach Currumbin State High School.
In 2008, Rapana played for the Gold Coast Titans' NYC team. In Round 18 of the 2008 NRL season, he made his NRL debut for the Titans against the Sydney Roosters. At the end of 2008, he was named on the interchange bench in the 2008 NYC Team of the Year and played for the New Zealand Māori rugby league team.
In 2009, Rapana left the NRL for a two-year Mormon mission.
In June, Rapana signed a contract with Super Rugby team, Western Force, starting in 2012.
Canberra (/ˈkænbrə/ or /ˈkænbərə/) is the capital city of Australia. With a population of 381,488, it is Australia's largest inland city and the eighth-largest city overall. The city is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), 280 km (170 mi) south-west of Sydney, and 660 km (410 mi) north-east of Melbourne. A resident of Canberra is known as a "Canberran".
The site of Canberra was selected for the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne, Australia's two largest cities. It is unusual among Australian cities, being an entirely planned city outside of any state, similar to Washington, D.C. in the United States or Brasília in Brazil. Following an international contest for the city's design, a blueprint by the Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin was selected and construction commenced in 1913. The Griffins' plan featured geometric motifs such as circles, hexagons and triangles, and was centred on axes aligned with significant topographical landmarks in the Australian Capital Territory.
Jarrod Croker (born 11 September 1990) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer for the Canberra Raiders of the National Rugby League (NRL). A goal-kicking centre, he has played his entire career to date with the Raiders, with whom he became the 2012 and 2015 top point-scorer.
Hailing from Goulburn, New South Wales, Croker played for the Goulburn Stockmen club as a junior. He played for the New South Wales Schoolboys and Australian Schoolboys representative teams in 2007 before being selected for the New South Wales Under-18s in 2008. Croker was part of the Canberra team that won the inaugural National Youth Competition (Toyota Cup) in 2008.
Croker broke into Canberra's first-grade side in 2009, making his debut in Round 2 against the Sydney Roosters, and went on to make 21 appearances in his rookie season. He was again a regular in Canberra's 2010 side, making 25 appearances as Canberra finished 7th and made the NRL finals. However, it was a missed penalty goal from Croker that ended the Raiders' 2010 season. In a sudden-death finals match against the Wests Tigers, in front of a home crowd of 26,476, he pushed wide a 30-metre kick that would have tied the match at 26–26. Canberra's coach David Furner—himself a former Raiders goalkicker—defended Croker, arguing his goalkicking form had won a number of matches for the team during the season. Days later, Croker was selected for Australia's train-on squad for the Four Nations tournament.
The Wests Tigers are an Australian professional rugby league football club based in Sydney's Inner West. They have competed in the National Rugby League since they were formed at the end of the 1999 NRL season as a joint-venture club between the Balmain Tigers and the Western Suburbs Magpies.
The Wests Tigers started playing in the 2000 NRL season and won their maiden premiership in 2005. The club also won the World Sevens in 2004.
The Wests Tigers have three home grounds: Leichhardt Oval (the home ground of Balmain), Campbelltown Stadium (the home ground of Western Suburbs) and ANZ Stadium as of 2014. They are currently coached by Jason Taylor and captained by Aaron Woods. The club CEO is Justin Pascoe and the general manager is Phil Moss.
In Australia, the game of rugby league began in 1908, the New South Wales Rugby League premiership (NSWRL) had nine teams from the Sydney, Australia area. Two of those teams were clubs based in Balmain and the Western Suburbs who happen to meet each other in the in round 1 of 1908 Balmain went on to win 24 to 0. The Balmain club, who later adopted a Tiger as their emblem, in their tenure in the NSWRL won eleven premierships in twenty grand finals and was one of the forces in the NSWRL competition. However their last premiership success was in 1969 and in the 1990s with many new clubs being established, there was pressure on clubs to perform to survive in the first grade competition in Australia. The Wests Tigers got their name from their suburb and from their logo.

It was expected the clash would re-ignite a bitter rivalry between the two clubs in the last 18 months and the entire 80 minutes did not disappoint with both sides going end-to-end before a Tyrone May four-pointer seven minutes out from the siren secured the win. The Panthers dominated the opening quarter of the game before the momentum swung dramatically in the Raiders' favour on the back of a 7-3 penalty count.
