Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (/ˈtʃɑːrlz ˈlʌtwɪdʒ ˈdɒdsən/; 27 January 1832 – 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll (/ˈkærəl/), was an English writer, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, which includes the poem Jabberwocky, and the poem The Hunting of the Snark, all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy. There are societies in many parts of the world dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of his works and the investigation of his life.
Dodgson's family was predominantly northern English, with Irish connections, conservative and High Church Anglican. Most of Dodgson's male ancestors were army officers or Church of England clergy. His great-grandfather, also named Charles Dodgson, had risen through the ranks of the church to become the Bishop of Elphin. His paternal grandfather, another Charles, had been an army captain, killed in action in Ireland in 1803 when his two sons were hardly more than babies. The older of these sons – yet another Charles Dodgson – was Carroll's father. He went to Westminster School and then to Christ Church, Oxford. He reverted to the other family tradition and took holy orders. He was mathematically gifted and won a double first degree, which could have been the prelude to a brilliant academic career. Instead, he married his first cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1827 and became a country parson.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.
Alice was published in 1865, three years after Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat on 4 July 1862 (this popular date of the "golden afternoon" might be a confusion or even another Alice-tale, for that particular day was cool, cloudy, and rainy) up the Isis with the three young daughters of Henry Liddell (the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and Dean of Christ Church): Lorina Charlotte Liddell (aged 13, born 1849, "Prima" in the book's prefatory verse); Alice Pleasance Liddell (aged 10, born 1852, "Secunda" in the prefatory verse); Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8, born 1853, "Tertia" in the prefatory verse).

Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Leòdhas, pronounced [ʎɔː.əs̪], also Isle of Lewis) is the northern part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island of the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides (an archipelago) of Scotland. The total area of Lewis is 683 square miles (1,770 km2).
Lewis is, in general, the lower lying part of the island, with the other part, Harris, being more mountainous. The flatter, more fertile land means Lewis contains the largest settlement, Stornoway, and three-quarters of the population of the Western Isles. Beyond human habitation, the island's diverse habitats are home to an assortment of flora and fauna, such as the golden eagle, red deer and seals and are recognised in a number of conservation areas.
Lewis is of Presbyterian tradition with a rich history, having once been part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.

A very lovely poem by Carroll! Even with a "moral"! Humorous as most of Carroll's poems. In iambic dimetres. My Fairy I have a fairy by my side Which says I must not sleep, When once in pain I loudly cried It said "You must not weep" If, full of mirth, I smile and grin, It says "You must not laugh" When once I wished to drink some gin It said "You must not quaff". When once a meal I wished to taste It said "You must not bite" When to the wars I went in haste It said "You must not fight". "What may I do?" at length I cried, Tired of the painful task. The fairy quietly replied, And said "You must not ask". Moral: "You mustn't."

Simon Winchester, author of 'The Alice Behind Wonderland', talks about Charles Dodgson (AKA Lewis Carroll) and his relationship with Alice Liddell's family.
Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles L. Dodgson. The pen name came about by taking his own name, Charles Lutwidge, translating it into Latin - Carolus Ludovicus, reversing the names and retranslating them into English - hence, Lewis Carroll. Born in Cheshire, Charles was the third of 11 children. Dodgson suffered from a bad stammer and was deaf in one ear. Dodgson's first piece of work under his pen name was a romantic poem called Solitude, published in 1856 Alternative titles considered for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland included Alice Among the Fairies and Alice's Golden Hour. Dodgson denied that Alice was based on his real life friend, Alice Liddell. An acrostic poem is where the first letter on each line makes up a word or words. Such a poem can be found at the end of Through...

a slideshow of the real Alice in Wonderland, Alice Pleasance Liddell Hargreaves. except for two or three, all photos in this slideshow were taken by Charles Lutwidge Dodgeson, whose pen-name was Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland. Alot has been said about Alice's lack of expression in the photographs. The actual reason for this is simple. Charles Dodgson used the wet collodian process of photography.this process required that the subject remain absolutely still for a period of 10 to 45 seconds, sometimes longer. Any movement in her expression could result in the subject's face blurring in the final image. It is difficult for an adult to hold a natural looking smile for this long, let alone a child.

As Alice Liddell’s great-granddaughter, Vanessa Tait grew up in a world rich with Wonderland. Her debut novel, The Looking Glass House, sparkles with characters bound by the society rules of Victorian England, and ignited by the imagination of Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson’s pen name). Published on Alice Day in the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice in Wonderland, Vanessa’s novel is a stunning rendition of the unusual friendship between Charles Dodgson and the young Alice Liddell, told through the eyes of her naïve governess. Während ihre Schwester ihr aus einem Buch vorliest, sieht die Titelheldin Alice ein sprechendes, weißes Kaninchen, das auf eine Uhr starrt und meint, es komme zu spät. Neugierig folgt Alice ihm in seinen Bau. And how did their actions change the course of history forever? Historian, author and Tudor-expert Dr Suzannah Lipscomb will retrace the couples’ steps by visiting the places that were important to them, where their romantic, political and tragic lives were played out, and meet people today who are hell bent on finding out the truth about the Tudor love affair that changed everything forever. Summary: A delightful version of Alice's Adventures following that scurrying Rabbit with the watch that is shortened for the enjoyment of younger children. She meets all of the strange talking animals (and they are just as rude or silly as usual) and eats and drinks from all of the bottles and grows and shrinks alarmingly just like in the longer version. Enjoy.

At the western edge of the parking lot lies these secret cave passages that meander upward into the rocks. It's pretty amazing to climb (and crawl) through that area. We didn't discover all of it. There was much more. All of the rocks that layered the area created these passages. Special thanks to Joe Erickson, our Joshua Tree guide!
