Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (/ˈtʃɑːrlz ˈlʌtwɪdʒ ˈdɒdsən/; 27 January 1832 – 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll (/ˈkærəl/), was an English writer, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, which includes the poem Jabberwocky, and the poem The Hunting of the Snark, all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy. There are societies in many parts of the world dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of his works and the investigation of his life.
Antecedents
Dodgson's family was predominantly northern English, with Irish connections, conservative and High Church Anglican. Most of Dodgson's male ancestors were army officers or Church of England clergy. His great-grandfather, also named Charles Dodgson, had risen through the ranks of the church to become the Bishop of Elphin. His paternal grandfather, another Charles, had been an army captain, killed in action in Ireland in 1803 when his two sons were hardly more than babies. The older of these sons – yet another Charles Dodgson – was Carroll's father. He went to Westminster School and then to Christ Church, Oxford. He reverted to the other family tradition and took holy orders. He was mathematically gifted and won a double first degree, which could have been the prelude to a brilliant academic career. Instead, he married his first cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1827 and became a country parson.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.
Background
Alice was published in 1865, three years after Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat on 4 July 1862 (this popular date of the "golden afternoon" might be a confusion or even another Alice-tale, for that particular day was cool, cloudy, and rainy) up the Isis with the three young daughters of Henry Liddell (the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and Dean of Christ Church): Lorina Charlotte Liddell (aged 13, born 1849, "Prima" in the book's prefatory verse); Alice Pleasance Liddell (aged 10, born 1852, "Secunda" in the prefatory verse); Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8, born 1853, "Tertia" in the prefatory verse).

This poem appears in Through The Looking Glass, published in 1872. The first letter of each line spells out Alice's full name. It has a lovely dreamy quality which makes it a nice poem to work with.

Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles L. Dodgson. The pen name came about by taking his own name, Charles Lutwidge, translating it into Latin - Carolus Ludovicus, reversing the names and retranslating them into English - hence, Lewis Carroll. Born in Cheshire, Charles was the third of 11 children. Dodgson suffered from a bad stammer and was deaf in one ear. Dodgson's first piece of work under his pen name was a romantic poem called Solitude, published in 1856 Alternative titles considered for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland included Alice Among the Fairies and Alice's Golden Hour. Dodgson denied that Alice was based on his real life friend, Alice Liddell. An acrostic poem is where the first letter on each line makes up a word or words. a slideshow of the real Alice in Wonderland, Alice Pleasance Liddell Hargreaves. except for two or three, all photos in this slideshow were taken by Charles Lutwidge Dodgeson, whose pen-name was Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland. Alot has been said about Alice's lack of expression in the photographs. The actual reason for this is simple. Charles Dodgson used the wet collodian process of photography.this process required that the subject remain absolutely still for a period of 10 to 45 seconds, sometimes longer. Any movement in her expression could result in the subject's face blurring in the final image. It is difficult for an adult to hold a natural looking smile for this long, let alone a child.

Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles L. Dodgson. The pen name came about by taking his own name, Charles Lutwidge, translating it into Latin - Carolus Ludovicus, reversing the names and retranslating them into English - hence, Lewis Carroll.
Born in Cheshire, Charles was the third of 11 children.
Dodgson suffered from a bad stammer and was deaf in one ear.
Dodgson's first piece of work under his pen name was a romantic poem called Solitude, published in 1856
Alternative titles considered for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland included Alice Among the Fairies and Alice's Golden Hour.
Dodgson denied that Alice was based on his real life friend, Alice Liddell.
An acrostic poem is where the first letter on each line makes up a word or words. Such a poem can be found at the end of Through the Looking Glass which spells out Alice Liddell's name, leading people to believe that he did in fact base the character after his real life friend.
Queen Victoria supposedly was a big fan of the book and suggested to Dodgson that he dedicate his next book to her - Carroll denied this to be true.
Dodgson took up photography and excelled at the art. He photographed many famous people include Alfred Lord Tennyson and created approximately 3000 images. But after 24 years of taking pictures he abruptly stopped.
Chess figured prominently in Dodgson's work. References to the game can be found in Through the Looking Glass. Some of his photographs feature chess being played and it has been documented that Dodgson was an avid player.

Death Valley rewind, Free Riders experience
We had to visit this place again, in the Winter, where the temps were cooler. It was a great adventure for us riders. Eight of us joined together for this ride. A great plan is to stay at the Pahrump Nugget overnight, and enter Death Valley from the east, then exit on the west side.

Joshua Tree, Secret cave passages at Hidden Valley Camgrounds
At the western edge of the parking lot lies these secret cave passages that meander upward into the rocks. It's pretty amazing to climb (and crawl) through that area. We didn't discover all of it. There was much more. All of the rocks that layered the area created these passages. Special thanks to Joe Erickson, our Joshua Tree guide! We are the Free Riders motorcycle group and rode there as part of our exploration of interesting destinations in southern California.

The police did a great job of blocking off all traffic, which allows the bikers to ride unimpeded through the city of LA. In 1929 Louis Armstrong and his band landed in New York. This event would change his public image and career forever. Althought since 1924 Armstrong had played with many a big band, his recordings had mostly been made with combos - the famed “Hot Five” and “Hot Seven” - and blues singers (Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Chippie Hill etc.). Morever, the recorded material mostly consisted of jazz tunes, blues and “race” standards. From 1929, however, nearly all recordings saw Louis fronting his own band (or other bands). They played jazz standards - many of them were top hits by the best black and white composers, many of them had been composed for popular Broadway or off-Broadway productions, like, for instance, Fats Waller’s "Ain’t Misbehavin’" and “Black and blue” , originating from the “Connie’s Hot Chocolates” musical, where incidentally Louis starred himself. After the very good reception of “I Can’t Give You…” and “Mahogany Hall Stomp”, where the accompanying band was a near complete version of Luis Russell’s orchestra, record label Okeh arranged a new session and the result (tracks 10 to 16) was sensational, probably the best of this period. Louis’ record sales in Europe and the rest of the world were good, but the Okeh executives were afraid that his vocals could somehow "hurt" foreign listeners. So they started producing two versions of every song - with and without vocals. Several instrumental versions were recorded but only two were actually released, and you’ll find them here at tracks 24 & 25 (others were found later and pubblished for collectors’ joy).

Althought since 1924 Armstrong had played with many a big band, his recordings had mostly been made with combos - the famed “Hot Five” and “Hot Seven” - and blues singers (Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Chippie Hill etc.). Morever, the recorded material mostly consisted of jazz tunes, blues and “race” standards. From 1929, however, nearly all recordings saw Louis fronting his own band (or other bands). They played jazz standards - many of them were top hits by the best black and white composers, many of them had been composed for popular Broadway or off-Broadway productions, like, for instance, Fats Waller’s "Ain’t Misbehavin’" and “Black and blue” , originating from the “Connie’s Hot Chocolates” musical, where incidentally Louis starred himself. After the very good reception of “I Can’t Give You…” and “Mahogany Hall Stomp”, where the accompanying band was a near complete version of Luis Russell’s orchestra, record label Okeh arranged a new session and the result (tracks 10 to 16) was sensational, probably the best of this period. Louis’ record sales in Europe and the rest of the world were good, but the Okeh executives were afraid that his vocals could somehow "hurt" foreign listeners. So they started producing two versions of every song - with and without vocals. Several instrumental versions were recorded but only two were actually released, and you’ll find them here at tracks 24 & 25 (others were found later and pubblished for collectors’ joy).

"Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do ..." .. and from that moment onward we drift with Alice into another world. When she sees a White Rabbit as it runs through the tall grass (looking worriedly at the watch it takes from its waist-coat pocket), she runs after it and drops into a strange dream. The world is full of chatty animals, from a rather stand-offish hookah-smoking caterpillar to the friendly Cheshire Cat which only sometimes goes to the bother of having a body. And everyone seems to be ordering her about ... or telling her to recite poetry! ... and all those verses that she once knew so well seem strangely distorted.
In this book and in "Through the Looking Glass", Lewis Carroll affectionately brought together many of the wonderful stories he told to Alice and her sisters on long summer boating trips. (Summary by Peter Yearsley)

Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, was written in 1872 and it finds Alice in a land when she walks through a mirror into the Looking-Glass House. The land is full of mythological creatures and characters and nursery rhyme characters. Alice makes a guest appearance in a bizarre game of chess with Humpty Dumpty! A charming, witty story!
