Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (/ˈtʃɑːrlz ˈlʌtwɪdʒ ˈdɒdsən/; 27 January 1832 – 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll (/ˈkærəl/), was an English writer, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, which includes the poem Jabberwocky, and the poem The Hunting of the Snark, all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy. There are societies in many parts of the world dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of his works and the investigation of his life.
Dodgson's family was predominantly northern English, with Irish connections, conservative and High Church Anglican. Most of Dodgson's male ancestors were army officers or Church of England clergy. His great-grandfather, also named Charles Dodgson, had risen through the ranks of the church to become the Bishop of Elphin. His paternal grandfather, another Charles, had been an army captain, killed in action in Ireland in 1803 when his two sons were hardly more than babies. The older of these sons – yet another Charles Dodgson – was Carroll's father. He went to Westminster School and then to Christ Church, Oxford. He reverted to the other family tradition and took holy orders. He was mathematically gifted and won a double first degree, which could have been the prelude to a brilliant academic career. Instead, he married his first cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1827 and became a country parson.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.
Alice was published in 1865, three years after Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat on 4 July 1862 (this popular date of the "golden afternoon" might be a confusion or even another Alice-tale, for that particular day was cool, cloudy, and rainy) up the Isis with the three young daughters of Henry Liddell (the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and Dean of Christ Church): Lorina Charlotte Liddell (aged 13, born 1849, "Prima" in the book's prefatory verse); Alice Pleasance Liddell (aged 10, born 1852, "Secunda" in the prefatory verse); Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8, born 1853, "Tertia" in the prefatory verse).

This poem appears in Through The Looking Glass, published in 1872. The first letter of each line spells out Alice's full name. It has a lovely dreamy quality which makes it a nice poem to work with. The river in the video is the River Itchen, just south of Winchester. A Boat beneath a Sunny Sky A BOAT beneath a sunny sky, Lingering onward dreamily In an evening of July -- Children three that nestle near, Eager eye and willing ear, Pleased a simple tale to hear -- Long has paled that sunny sky: Echoes fade and memories die: Autumn frosts have slain July. Still she haunts me, phantomwise, Alice moving under skies Never seen by waking eyes. Children yet, the tale to hear, Eager eye and willing ear, Lovingly shall nestle near. In a Wonderland they lie, Dreaming as the days go by, Dreaming as...
Read by : DOSEofPoetry Brother And Sister - Lewis Carroll "SISTER, sister, go to bed! Go and rest your weary head." Thus the prudent brother said. "Do you want a battered hide, Or scratches to your face applied?" Thus his sister calm replied. "Sister, do not raise my wrath. I'd make you into mutton broth As easily as kill a moth" The sister raised her beaming eye And looked on him indignantly And sternly answered, "Only try!" Off to the cook he quickly ran. "Dear Cook, please lend a frying-pan To me as quickly as you can." And wherefore should I lend it you?" "The reason, Cook, is plain to view. I wish to make an Irish stew." "What meat is in that stew to go?" "My sister'll be the contents!" "Oh" "You'll lend the pan to me, Cook?" "No!" Moral: Never stew your sister.

Lewis Carroll's real name was Charles L. Dodgson. The pen name came about by taking his own name, Charles Lutwidge, translating it into Latin - Carolus Ludovicus, reversing the names and retranslating them into English - hence, Lewis Carroll. Born in Cheshire, Charles was the third of 11 children. Dodgson suffered from a bad stammer and was deaf in one ear. Dodgson's first piece of work under his pen name was a romantic poem called Solitude, published in 1856 Alternative titles considered for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland included Alice Among the Fairies and Alice's Golden Hour. Dodgson denied that Alice was based on his real life friend, Alice Liddell. An acrostic poem is where the first letter on each line makes up a word or words. Such a poem can be found at the end of Through...

a slideshow of the real Alice in Wonderland, Alice Pleasance Liddell Hargreaves. except for two or three, all photos in this slideshow were taken by Charles Lutwidge Dodgeson, whose pen-name was Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland. Alot has been said about Alice's lack of expression in the photographs. The actual reason for this is simple. Charles Dodgson used the wet collodian process of photography.this process required that the subject remain absolutely still for a period of 10 to 45 seconds, sometimes longer. Any movement in her expression could result in the subject's face blurring in the final image. It is difficult for an adult to hold a natural looking smile for this long, let alone a child.

This limited edition chapbook with letterpress covers will be released in August 2014. To order or find out more, go to www.rosemetalpress.com. More details about the book: Written in a series of quick, curious moments, THE IMAGINATION OF LEWIS CARROLL is a fabulist biography that eschews sense for nonsense and accuracy for truth. A logic instructor at Christ College, Lewis Carroll was a man who tied knots in words and stared at chessboards, a man who stammered before adults and soared in front of children, a man who lived in a world that was not our own. But Carroll didn't live in Wonderland or the Looking Glass—he lived in a world far more ...

Sylvie and Bruno Concluded - audiobook Lewis CARROLL (1832 - 1898) Sylvie and Bruno Concluded continues the adventures of the many characters in the previous volume Sylvie and Bruno. The fairy-children Sylvie and Bruno are charming whenever they appear, their fairy companions such as the Professor delight in taking ideas to their logical (and humorous) conclusions, and many nonsense songs are sung. Meanwhile, the mortals (comprised of the unnamed narrator, the gracious Lady Muriel and the sententious Arthur) tend to become the vehicles for Carroll's regular sermons on morality and proper Christian values. (Summary by Catharine Eastman) Genre(s): Children's Fiction, Myths, Legends & Fairy Tales Language: English (FULL Audiobook)

We had to visit this place again, in the Winter, where the temps were cooler. It was a great adventure for us riders. Eight of us joined together for this ride. A great plan is to stay at the Pahrump Nugget overnight, and enter Death Valley from the east, then exit on the west side.
The Inland Empire Free Riders took to the mountain ranges in San Bernardino County, and visited 3 lakes to find the origins of life. The jury is still out, but we had a great time.
At the western edge of the parking lot lies these secret cave passages that meander upward into the rocks. It's pretty amazing to climb (and crawl) through that area. We didn't discover all of it. There was much more. All of the rocks that layered the area created these passages. Special thanks to Joe Erickson, our Joshua Tree guide! We are the Free Riders motorcycle group and rode there as part of our exploration of interesting destinations in southern California.
We did it! A little 3 day adventure to see the best of Sequoia National Park by motorcycle. The weather was great, and the roads and sightseeing was really fun. Inland Empire Free Riders motorcycle club, for bikers who love to get out there.
This is a video of the 1033 Benefit ride put together by the City of Hawthorne Police Department. The Inland Empire Free Riders too part in this ride, and it was awesome. The police did a great job of blocking off all traffic, which allows the bikers to ride unimpeded through the city of LA. Destination was the Gaslamp restaurant where a hot Journey cover band was playing. For more information about the Free Riders, visit: http://www.meetup.com/Inland-Empire-Free-Riders/
