Rammstein

Rammstein (German pronunciation: [ˈʁamʃtaɪn]) is a German Neue Deutsche Härte band, formed in 1994 in Berlin. Throughout its existence, Rammstein's six-man lineup has been unchanged—singer Till Lindemann, guitarists Richard Z. Kruspe and Paul H. Landers, bassist Oliver "Ollie" Riedel, drummer Christoph "Doom" Schneider and keyboardist Christian "Flake" Lorenz.

The majority of their songs are in German, but they have also performed songs entirely or partially in other languages including English, Spanish, French, and Russian. Rammstein's award-winning live shows are renowned for their pyrotechnic elements and both on and off-stage theatrics. Rammstein's entire catalogue is published by Universal Music Group.

History

Founding and Herzeleid, 1989–96

In 1989 East German guitarist Richard Z. Kruspe escaped to West Berlin and started the band Orgasm Death Gimmicks. At that time, he was heavily influenced by American music, especially that of rock group Kiss. After the Berlin Wall came down, he moved back home to Schwerin, where Till Lindemann worked as a basket-weaver and played drums in the band First Arsch (loosely translated as "First Ass" or "First Arse"). At this time, Kruspe lived with Oliver Riedel of the Inchtabokatables and Christoph "Doom" Schneider of Die Firma. Kruspe had come to realize that the music he had previously created did not really suit him. He envisioned something that would combine machines as well as the sound of hard guitars. Kruspe, Riedel and Schneider started working together on a new project in 1994. Finding it difficult to write both music and lyrics, Kruspe persuaded Lindemann, whom he had overheard singing while he was working, to join the fledgling group.

Ice

Ice is water frozen into a solid state. Depending on the presence of impurities such as particles of soil or bubbles of air, it can appear transparent or a more or less opaque bluish-white color.

In the Solar System, ice is abundant and occurs naturally from as close to the Sun as Mercury to as far as the Oort cloud. Beyond the Solar System, it occurs as interstellar ice. It is abundant on Earth's surface – particularly in the polar regions and above the snow line – and, as a common form of precipitation and deposition, plays a key role in Earth's water cycle and climate. It falls as snowflakes and hail or occurs as frost, icicles or ice spikes.

Ice molecules can exhibit up to sixteen different phases (packing geometries) that depend on temperature and pressure. When water is cooled rapidly (quenching), up to three different types of amorphous ice can form depending on the history of its pressure and temperature. When cooled slowly correlated proton tunneling occurs below 20 K giving rise to macroscopic quantum phenomena. Virtually all the ice on Earth's surface and in its atmosphere is of a hexagonal crystalline structure denoted as ice Ih (spoken as "ice one h") with minute traces of cubic ice denoted as ice Ic. The most common phase transition to ice Ih occurs when liquid water is cooled below 0°C (273.15K, 32°F) at standard atmospheric pressure. It may also be deposited directly by water vapor, as happens in the formation of frost. The transition from ice to water is melting and from ice directly to water vapor is sublimation.

Rock am Ring and Rock im Park

The Rock am Ring (German: Rock at the Ring) and Rock im Park (German: Rock in the Park) festivals are two simultaneous rock music festivals held annually. While Rock am Ring takes place at Mendig on an old airbase; Rock im Park takes place at the Zeppelinfeld (49°25′44″N 11°07′19″E / 49.42889°N 11.12194°E / 49.42889; 11.12194) in Nuremberg, in the south.

Both festivals are usually regarded as one event with a mostly identical lineup for both festivals. All artists perform one day at Nürburgring and another day in Nuremberg during the three-day event. There have been minor exceptions in the past years where an artist would be announced for one of the festivals only. Combined, Rock im Park and Rock am Ring are the largest music festival held in Germany and one of the largest in the world with a combined attendance of over 150,000 people in 2007, selling out both events in advance for the first time.

Feuer frei!

"Feuer frei!" /ˌfɔɪər ˈfraɪ/ is a song by German industrial metal band Rammstein. The song is released as the fifth single from their third album Mutter. The title is from the command to start shooting in German military language, can be compared to "fire at will", or "open fire" (literally, "fire freely!").

The single charted in Germany, peaking at number 33, and in the UK at number 35.

Live performances

"Feuer frei!" debuted live in a concert exclusively for members of the fan area in April 2000, when it was called "Punk". Its next performance wasn't until May 2001 (this being the album version) and since then, it has been played in almost every Rammstein concert. During live performances of this song Richard, Paul, Till and sometimes Ollie will wear masks with flamethrowers attached that shoot flames several feet into the air.

Overview

"Feuer frei!" is one of the band's most known songs, and is credited as their most popular. Despite this, it does not feature on the band's greatest hits collection Made in Germany 1995–2011, for reasons that have not been explained. The song is featured in the film xXx, it is also featured during the CSI episode "Slaves of Las Vegas". The UK Feuer frei!! single was released in three parts (2 CDs, 1 DVD), in three different colours (Yellow-Green-Orange), each with different tracklistings.
