After civil rights lawyer Michelle Alexander published her book The New Jim Crow in 2010 on our dehumanizing system of incarceration, she ignited a national conversation about justice in America and sparked a movement. In her book, Alexander explores how the war on drugs, "get-tough" sentencing policies and racism has created a caste system similar to that of our segregationist past.
Since then, Alexander has traveled the country to meet advocates and everyday Americans working to end mass incarceration in America — home to 25 percent of the world's prisoners, despite representing only five percent of the world's population.

An exhibition featuring Renaissance artist Pintoricchio is aiming to dispel a long standing myth about Pope Alexander VI's young lover.
Pintoricchio was practically accused of blasphemy by those who contended he used Giulia Farnese as the model for the Madonna in a wall painting that decorated the pontiff's private apartment.

Was Renaissance artist Pintoricchio blasphemous or just wrongly accused?
A summer exhibition of Pintoricchio's works at Rome's Capitoline Museums explores the controversy over whether the artist used Pope Alexander VI's young lover, Giulia Farnese, as the model for the Madonna in a wall painting that decorated the pontiff's private apartment.
The artist was practically accused of blasphemy for the painting.
One of the curators, Francesco Buranelli, says the notion that Pintoricchio's "Madonna with Child" was a portrait of Giulia Farnese has no basis.
"To destroy a person there's nothing better than spreading untruths about them, hitting them on what would be considered the human weaknesses of those who had political and religious positions like the Pope. It is true that today we judge with the culture of the 21st century, but in that time it was much more common than it is today and it would not be accepted today," he says.
A stunning beauty with long, chestnut-coloured tresses, Farnese came from an ambitious Italian noble family. Detractors dubbed her "the Bride of Christ" and "the pope's concubine."
Giorgio Vasari, a 16th century painter and biographer of artists, perpetuated the claim that "Madonna with Child" was essentially a portrait of Farnese.
"Without a doubt, the rumours were going around, because there are various letters that mentioned them, but Vasari (Giorgio Vasari, painter and biographer of artists) got it from the mouth of the anti-Pope faction and the Farnese dynasty," says Buranelli.
The Capitoline show's organizers describe her as "the adolescent lover and not very hidden concubine" of Alexander VI, who was born as Rodrigo de Borgia.
The painting provoked so much scandal that Pope Alexander VII ordered the fresco removed more than five decades after he succeeded the previous Alexander.
The 1492-1503 Borgia papacy was interwoven with a family dynasty of violence, jealousy and intrigue, the stuff of which eventually inspired a TV series.
The painting was ripped out and over time, its remaining fragments were thought to have been lost forever. But it turned out some of the original did survive.
In 2005, a fragment depicting baby Jesus, rosy-cheeked and with his right foot held by the extended hand of Alexander VI, surfaced at an art market, says Buranelli, who for 11 years served as director the Vatican Museums.
Like key pieces of a jigsaw puzzle with its other pieces long scattered, the portrait of the infant Jesus is shown side-by-side in the exhibit's last room with another fragment: the Madonna that all the fuss was about.
That fragment was loaned by a private collection whose identity Buranelli wouldn't reveal.
"Finding a never-seen-before of Pintoricchio is almost impossible and we did it, thanks to the loan from the owner of the Madonna. The rejoining of the two fragments comes after many centuries from when Alexander VII authorized the removal from the cubicle of Alexander VI in the Apostolic palace. It has been almost 400 years since they were taken out of the Apostolic palace and they were separated," he says.
The fragment depicting the rest of the Borgia was likely destroyed under Alexander VII, according to Buranelli.
The exhibit, which runs until Sept. 10, encourages visitors to draw their own conclusions by comparing other Madonnas painted by Pintoricchio.

Alexander Pope (21 May 1688 – 30 May 1744) was an 18th-century English poet. He is best known for his satirical verse, as well as for his translation of Homer. Famous for his use of the heroic couplet, he is the second-most frequently quoted writer in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, after Shakespeare.
Life
Early life
Alexander Pope was born to Alexander Pope Senior (1646–1717), a linen merchant of Plough Court, Lombard Street, London, and his wife Edith (née Turner) (1643–1733), who were both Catholics. Edith's sister Christiana was the wife of the famous miniature painter Samuel Cooper. Pope's education was affected by the recently enacted Test Acts, which upheld the status of the established Church of England and banned Catholics from teaching, attending a university, voting, or holding public office on pain of perpetual imprisonment. Pope was taught to read by his aunt, and went to Twyford School in about 1698/99. He then went to two Catholic schools in London. Such schools, while illegal, were tolerated in some areas.

The Pope (Latin: papa from Greek: πάππας pappas, a child's word for "father") is the Bishop of Rome and the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church. The primacy of the Roman bishop is largely derived from his role as the traditional successor to Saint Peter, to whom Jesus is supposed to have given the keys of Heaven and the powers of "binding and loosing", naming him as the "rock" upon which the church would be built. Another admirer of Laura at the time was a well-to-do, volatile and impetuous young artist who, before the plodding Rolls knew what was happening, had swept Laura off her feet and married her. The artist's name was Leslie Locke. Sir Douglas had never gotten over his love for Laura and had never taken any interest in any other woman since, and he and Laura had remained the closest of friends. Pope's client, charged with murder of a model he had been seeing, and going on trial for his life, was the man who had married Rolls' only-love. Sir Douglas, knowing it may kill him, takes the case, and fights with the last of his strength to save the life of the husband of the woman he has always loved. And, possibly, have to implicate Laura in the proceedings.

A summer exhibition of Pintoricchio's works at Rome's Capitoline Museums explores the controversy over whether the artist used Pope Alexander VI's young lover, Giulia Farnese, as the model for the Madonna in a wall painting that decorated the pontiff's private apartment.
The artist was practically accused of blasphemy for the painting.
One of the curators, Francesco Buranelli, says the notion that Pintoricchio's "Madonna with Child" was a portrait of Giulia Farnese has no basis.
"To destroy a person there's nothing better than spreading untruths about them, hitting them on what would be considered the human weaknesses of those who had political and religious positions like the Pope. It is true that today we judge with the culture of the 21st century, but in that time it was much more common than it is today and it would not be accepted today," he says.
A stunning beauty with long, chestnut-coloured tresses, Farnese came from an ambitious Italian noble family. Detractors dubbed her "the Bride of Christ" and "the pope's concubine."
Giorgio Vasari, a 16th century painter and biographer of artists, perpetuated the claim that "Madonna with Child" was essentially a portrait of Farnese.
"Without a doubt, the rumours were going around, because there are various letters that mentioned them, but Vasari (Giorgio Vasari, painter and biographer of artists) got it from the mouth of the anti-Pope faction and the Farnese dynasty," says Buranelli.
The Capitoline show's organizers describe her as "the adolescent lover and not very hidden concubine" of Alexander VI, who was born as Rodrigo de Borgia.
The painting provoked so much scandal that Pope Alexander VII ordered the fresco removed more than five decades after he succeeded the previous Alexander.
The 1492-1503 Borgia papacy was interwoven with a family dynasty of violence, jealousy and intrigue, the stuff of which eventually inspired a TV series.
The painting was ripped out and over time, its remaining fragments were thought to have been lost forever. But it turned out some of the original did survive.
In 2005, a fragment depicting baby Jesus, rosy-cheeked and with his right foot held by the extended hand of Alexander VI, surfaced at an art market, says Buranelli, who for 11 years served as director the Vatican Museums.
Like key pieces of a jigsaw puzzle with its other pieces long scattered, the portrait of the infant Jesus is shown side-by-side in the exhibit's last room with another fragment: the Madonna that all the fuss was about.
That fragment was loaned by a private collection whose identity Buranelli wouldn't reveal.
"Finding a never-seen-before of Pintoricchio is almost impossible and we did it, thanks to the loan from the owner of the Madonna. The rejoining of the two fragments comes after many centuries from when Alexander VII authorized the removal from the cubicle of Alexander VI in the Apostolic palace. It has been almost 400 years since they were taken out of the Apostolic palace and they were separated," he says.
The fragment depicting the rest of the Borgia was likely destroyed under Alexander VII, according to Buranelli.
The exhibit, which runs until Sept. 10, encourages visitors to draw their own conclusions by comparing other Madonnas painted by Pintoricchio.

One of the curators, Francesco Buranelli, says the notion that Pintoricchio's "Madonna with Child" was a portrait of Giulia Farnese has no basis.
"To destroy a person there's nothing better than spreading untruths about them, hitting them on what would be considered the human weaknesses of those who had political and religious positions like the Pope. It is true that today we judge with the culture of the 21st century, but in that time it was much more common than it is today and it would not be accepted today," he says.
A stunning beauty with long, chestnut-coloured tresses, Farnese came from an ambitious Italian noble family. Detractors dubbed her "the Bride of Christ" and "the pope's concubine."
Giorgio Vasari, a 16th century painter and biographer of artists, perpetuated the claim that "Madonna with Child" was essentially a portrait of Farnese.
"Without a doubt, the rumours were going around, because there are various letters that mentioned them, but Vasari (Giorgio Vasari, painter and biographer of artists) got it from the mouth of the anti-Pope faction and the Farnese dynasty," says Buranelli.
The Capitoline show's organizers describe her as "the adolescent lover and not very hidden concubine" of Alexander VI, who was born as Rodrigo de Borgia.
The painting provoked so much scandal that Pope Alexander VII ordered the fresco removed more than five decades after he succeeded the previous Alexander.
The 1492-1503 Borgia papacy was interwoven with a family dynasty of violence, jealousy and intrigue, the stuff of which eventually inspired a TV series.
The painting was ripped out and over time, its remaining fragments were thought to have been lost forever. But it turned out some of the original did survive.
In 2005, a fragment depicting baby Jesus, rosy-cheeked and with his right foot held by the extended hand of Alexander VI, surfaced at an art market, says Buranelli, who for 11 years served as director the Vatican Museums.
Like key pieces of a jigsaw puzzle with its other pieces long scattered, the portrait of the infant Jesus is shown side-by-side in the exhibit's last room with another fragment: the Madonna that all the fuss was about.
That fragment was loaned by a private collection whose identity Buranelli wouldn't reveal.
"Finding a never-seen-before of Pintoricchio is almost impossible and we did it, thanks to the loan from the owner of the Madonna. The rejoining of the two fragments comes after many centuries from when Alexander VII authorized the removal from the cubicle of Alexander VI in the Apostolic palace. It has been almost 400 years since they were taken out of the Apostolic palace and they were separated," he says.
The fragment depicting the rest of the Borgia was likely destroyed under Alexander VII, according to Buranelli.
The exhibit, which runs until Sept. 10, encourages visitors to draw their own conclusions by comparing other Madonnas painted by Pintoricchio.

In this lesson, we take a look at Alexander Pope's biography and its impact on his life, and then we'll look at epistolary literature and blank verse in preparation for a reading of Pope's Essay on Man, Epistle 1.

Stanza IV: Pope tells his audience to be wiser and that if man questions God about his place in the universe, he's acting like the fallen angels
Stanza V: This is perhaps the most devastating stanza in the epistle; it's Pope's personification of Pride as a selfish little brat

Stanzas VI and VI: Pope points out that God has used Nature to give all animals their special powers and bodies—this is a typical Enlightenment view of Nature as a perfectly ordered system designed by the Master Architect (God the engineer or scientist)

Stanzas VIII and IX: Pope continues to point out the evils of pride and questioning the perfection of Nature and man's place in it
Stanza X: Pope gives a very strong argument for humility and acceptance, ending with the chilling and humbling line: "whatever is, is right."

This is the first part of the Iliad, book 1 of 24, so as you can imagine this is a long-term project. If you haven't previously read the text it can be a little confusing because it's not always clear who is speaking - different names are used for the same person (Achilles is referred to as Pelides for example). With this in mind, I decided to visually display who is speaking - their names and a few lines of information about them become visible when they do so. Since Pope created this translation in the 18th century, some of the words he used may not be familiar, and so for several of them a small description will appear when they are mentioned. I've tried to do this only where I thought it necessary, and the best way to understand the whole poem is to read the text itself - see the link above.
There are 23 more books in the Iliad, 24 in total, so it may be that it will take me a long, long time to complete the whole text, if I ever do. Your really don't need to wait - I encourage you to use my audio as an introduction to this epic, and can absolutely recommend reading the whole story. There are several other translations if you prefer prose rather than poetry.

The Rape of the Lock is a mock-heroic narrative poem written by Alexander Pope, first published anonymously in Lintot's Miscellany in May 1712 in two cantos (334 lines), but then revised, expanded and reissued under Pope's name on March 2, 1714, in a much-expanded 5-canto version (794 lines). The final form was available in 1717 with the addition of Clarissa's speech on good humour. The poem satirizes a petty squabble by comparing it to the epic world of the gods. It was based on an incident recounted by Pope's friend, John Caryll. Arabella Fermor and her suitor, Lord Petre, were both from aristocratic recusant Catholic families at a period in England when under such laws as the Test Act, all denominations except Anglicanism suffered legal restrictions and penalties (for example Petre could not take up his place in the House of Lords as a Catholic). Petre, lusting after Arabella, had cut off a lock of her hair without permission, and the consequent argument had created a breach between the two families. Pope, also a Catholic, wrote the poem at the request of friends in an attempt to "comically merge the two." He utilized the character Belinda to represent Arabella and introduced an entire system of "sylphs," or guardian spirits of virgins, a parodized version of the gods and goddesses of conventional epic. However, despite the title, the poem is not as much an original analysis as it is a compilation of Pope’s various literary opinions. A reading of the poem makes it clear that he is addressing not so much the ingenuous reader as the intending writer. It is written in a type of rhyming verse called heroic couplets.
