Holden

GM Holden Ltd, commonly known as Holden, is an Australian automaker that operates in Australasia and is headquartered in Port Melbourne, Victoria. The company was founded in 1856 as a saddlery manufacturer in South Australia. In 1908 it moved into the automotive field, before becoming a subsidiary of the United States-based General Motors (GM) in 1931. After becoming a subsidiary of GM, the company was named General Motors-Holden's Ltd, becoming Holden Ltd in 1998—the current name was adopted in 2005.

Holden is responsible for GM vehicle operations in Australasia, and on their behalf, held partial ownership of GM Daewoo in South Korea between 2002 and 2009. Holden has offered a broad range of locally produced vehicles, supplemented by imported GM models. Holden has offered the following badge engineered models in sharing arrangements: Chevrolet, Isuzu, Nissan, Opel, Suzuki, Toyota and Vauxhall Motors. As of 2013, the vehicle lineup consists of models from GM Korea, GM Thailand, GM in the US, and self-developed Commodore, Caprice, and Ute. Holden also distributed the European Opel brand in Australia in 2012 until the brand's Australian demise in mid-2013.

Holden Commodore

The Holden Commodore is a car manufactured since 1978 by Holden in Australia and, formerly, in New Zealand.

For the original model, Holden replaced the long-serving Kingswood and Premier large cars developed in Australia, with another rear wheel drive (RWD) platform that was, however, based on a smaller European design by Opel, re-engineered for Australian conditions. Subsequent series became larger, culminating with the fourth generation Commodore, fully developed in Australia and based on the GM Zeta platform.

Initially introduced as a single sedan body style, the range expanded in 1979 to include a station wagon. From 1984, Holden began branding the flagship Commodore model as Holden Calais, with the Commodore Berlina introduced in 1984 gaining independent Holden Berlina nomenclature in 1988. Long-wheelbase Statesman/Caprice derivatives and Commodore utility body variants followed in 1990. The third generation architecture spawned the most body styles, with a new Holden utility launched in 2000 (now officially as the Holden Ute), reborn Monaro coupé in 2001, four-door Holden Crewman utility and all-wheel drive (AWD) Holden Adventra crossover in 2003. Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) in 1987 began official modification of high performance variants of the Commodore and its derivatives, under its own nameplate.

General Motors

General Motors Company, commonly known as GM, is an American multinational corporation headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, that designs, manufactures, markets and distributes vehicles and vehicle parts and sells financial services. General Motors produces vehicles in 37 countries under thirteen brands: Alpheon, Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Holden, HSV, Opel, Vauxhall, Wuling, Baojun, Jie Fang, UzDaewoo. General Motors holds a 20% stake in IMM, and a 77% stake in GM Korea. It also has a number of joint-ventures, including Shanghai GM, SAIC-GM-Wuling and FAW-GM in China, GM-AvtoVAZ in Russia, Ghandhara Industries in Pakistan, GM Uzbekistan, General Motors India, General Motors Egypt, and Isuzu Truck South Africa. General Motors employs 212,000 people and does business in more than 120 countries. General Motors is divided into five business segments: GM North America (GMNA), Opel Group, GM International Operations (GMIO), GM South America (GMSA), and GM Financial. As part of its 2009 bankruptcy restructuring the current company, General Motors Company LLC, ("new GM"), was formed in 2009, after the bankruptcy of the General Motors Corporation ("old GM"). The new company purchased the majority of the assets of "old GM", including the name "General Motors".

The lingering death of Holden: Why the factory really closed
Holden died in Australia, officially, in December 2013. But doctors will turn off the life support today - October 20, 2017. There’s a tremendous amount of uninformed speculation about why this has happened - you’ll see that on the news today. If you want to know the truth … let’s roll. The politicians will blame each other. Carmakers will blame the politicians, and us, and the local market, the high cost of labour (and on this point I’d say: they make cars successfully in Germany, don’t they?) They’ll blame the unions. Whatever. But if you want to know the truth, you have to listen very hard for what Ford and Holden do not say on this. What’s not being said here - by neither Ford nor Holden - what they will not say - is that they got their manufacturing operations, staggeringly, horribly wrong. Ford and Holden stopped building the cars that Australians wanted to drive. Therefore, they bought elsewhere. It’s that simple. This process happened over many years. It was identifiable and the operations were salvageable - for a long time. But Ford and Holden luxuriated through a decade of the worst ever product planning decisions, floating on a sea of public money - taxpayer funds. We paid them to get this wrong. And we did pay them rather a lot. Holden got $2.17 billion of your taxpayer funds from 2001 to 2012 inclusive. That’s an average of $180 million dollars a year. And that means, if you drove past a Holden dealer in 2012 and you saw in the corner of your eye, just one shiny new Holden Commodore on the lot - there was about $2000 of your money built into that car. Here’s how this worked: This was the Mafia’s business model, Detroit-style. It’s a money-for-jobs extortion-style deal, with some faceless Ford and GM bigwigs as the mafia, and the relevant Australian Federal Industry Minister as the poor bastard gaffer-taped to the chair. In October 2013 - just two months before pulling the pin - Holden went ‘Mafia 2.0’ on the Australian Government. They have never revealed the size of the additional extortionate demand on the table, to keep the factory open. Reports at the time suggested sums ranging from $150 million to $265 million, which sounds plausible. Remember - this was five months after Ford announced it was out. There was a great deal of uncertainty about the future of the industry, and a new Government was steering the ship. The new Federal Treasurer at the time - Joe Hockey - famously said, rhetorically, to Holden, in Parliament (quote) “either you’re here or you’re not”. It was a demand for Holden to reveal its long-term intentions for manufacturing and jobs. Then-Prime Minister Tony Abbott flat-out refused to up the ante, saying: "There's not going to be any extra money over and above the generous support the taxpayers have been giving the motor industry for a long time." Holden Boss Mark Bernhard has called for (quote) “dignity and respect” today. He said: “We don’t want a circus.” Indeed. Let’s depart from normal Holden operations and not have a circus on this last solemn day, shall we? Make no mistake, if you are a Holden worker, or if you were a Holden worker, or a worker at one of the component suppliers, or the other two carmakers, then my heart goes out to you, and you have my complete, unreserved respect and sympathy. I don’t think anyone seriously believes the failure of these operations was in any way abetted by the work you did, which was in my view excellent. You are in this position because of (in my view) shady decisions taken over many years in Detroit, by senior executives far too clever to burden themselves with tailoring the product to suit the market, especially as it was so much fun to float on a sea in life-rafts stuffed with Australian taxpayer’s funds. Your money. Perhaps you think I’m joking. The pool party in Detroit is still on. On the 29th of January this year the Australian Financial Review published an obscure story entitled: “Holden sends $150 million back to General Motors in Detroit as closure looms” That sum equates to $1.5 million returned for each of the 100 shares issued in Holden. In my view, there’s your absolute commitment to Australia, right there. Mark Bernhard wants dignity and respect today - and I agree in relation to the workers and their plight. Personally, however, I find Holden’s behaviour absolutely undignified, and worthy of no respect whatsoever. If you are a patriotic Australian, I would suggest you take this on board and make an informed decision when the time is right to buy your next new car. A solemn, tragic day today. It would be a far greater tragedy, however, if we do not learn from it.

Astra’s not such a bad car, simplistically. The detail design of the interior is not as good as a Mazda3 or Hyundai i30 - dollar for dollar. Nor is it as space efficient. Despite all three being the same size, you get 10 per cent more cargo volume in an i30, and 13 per cent more in a Mazda3. If you’re thinking about breeding over the term of ownership, that might be significant. The 1.4 turbo petrol engine in the cheaper models is OK - it’s comparable with the 2.0-litre non-turbo engines in equivalent Mazda3, Impreza and i30. But Astra has a nine-month service interval, where Mazda, Subaru and Hyundai all have 12 - this is significant if you’re a low-mileage driver. Unfortunately, Astra’s 1.6 turbo petrol engine requires premium unleaded. And even though it demands this more expensive fuel - which pumps up the ownership cost considerably - it does not deliver any more performance than the Hyundai, which runs happily on 91. The price of fuel is very important to many new car buyers, and while there’s a general obsession with fuel economy, a lot of buyers - maybe you - forget to check the minimum octane requirement. Astra also has a space-saver spare wheel and tyre. That is completely unacceptable on (quote-unquote) “Australia’s own” carmaker - nice job dismissing the needs of everyone who might drive long distances in regional areas. Jesus. What happened to core values. Did we fall over on them in the shower, suddenly? Holden has done a great job on the suspension tuning - they’re pretty good at that. So at least the Astra is set up for Australia’s crap roads. And it looks OK - except for the sedan, which is as ugly as a Honda City - and that’s profoundly ugly. Still - a subjective assessment there. The only one in this report. Owning a car is not a three- to five-year road test by you. It’s a serious, medium-term financial commitment. You are locked into that car for your mobility. And this leads me to the main reasons not to buy the Astra. Firstly: Holden is terrible at customer support, and renowned for selling unreliable cars to uninformed Australians. Holden has been so bad at this, for such a long time, that the corporate watchdog, the ACCC, recently attempted to put Holden’s head in a vice via a court-enforceable undertaking to comply with the legislated consumer guarantees. You know a company is behaving badly when the ACCC issues a press release (August 3rd) entitled “Holden undertakes to comply with consumer guarantees” - I couldn’t make this up. Like, in what universe is it newsworthy when a company agrees to comply with legislation. It implies that compliance with the law up to this point was only optional. What sort of limp-dick regulatory environment declares it OK to fail to comply with legislation? Consumer guarantees exist to protect you - with a right to refund or replacement by ensuring that there are minimum requirements like fit for purpose and reasonable durability. For many years Holden has treated these guarantees as completely negotiable. It’s absolutely immoral. Like, you’re a king when you’re on the showroom floor, but a slave in the service department. People always accuse me of bashing Holden, and to those critics I would say: A bash is where you deliver intentionally, a tsunami toxic fiction. However, these are facts. You cannot bash someone with the facts. The ACCC’s action is a fact. Easily verifiable, like the rest of the facts here, should you wish to investigate independently. So, with its head currently in the ACCC’s vice, Holden admitted the breathtaking panorama of its consumer misrepresentation, and its widespread breaches of consumer law. This is a fact. The e-mails I have received for years from Holden owners at the end of their tether - left completely out in the cold - they’re facts. And I would not want you to walk a mile in their shoes. Then, Holden will attempt to slap you with a gag order - a non-disclosure agreement - just to shut you up. I’m told this remains standard operating procedure at Holden even today. Lastly, you need to consider Holden’s protracted slide to obscurity - 147,000 sales in 2007. Fast-forward 10 years: 94,000 sales last year - that’s Nagasaki on the morning of August 10, 1945, commercially. And there’s no evidence Holden has stopped the bleeding, having just fired one in 10 of its dealers. Things are looking very bleak for Holden’s future. And then there’s the French, and the entirely unknown way Peugeot-Citroen ownership of Opel will play into Holden’s future product. Both these facts play into the risk of depreciation disaster, which Holden Cruze owners today feel only too acutely.

GM Holden today celebrated nearly 70 years of proud manufacturing heritage with the final Holden Commodore rolling off the Elizabeth line today at 10.45am (Adelaide time). A private ceremony for employees was held today to mark Holden’s proud manufacturing history and pay tribute to the generations of hard-working men and women who literally built the Holden legend. From the very first Holden 48-215 to roll off the Fishermans Bend production line on 29 November 1948, to the final VFII Commodore Redline to come out of the Elizabeth factory on 20 October 2017, Holden has been a part of the fabric of Australia and that’s an honoured position that the Lion brand is committed to keeping for many years to come. Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mark Bernhard, said: “Treating our people with dignity and respect was always our number one priority during this transition and we’re all proud we were able to achieve that, we see it as recognition of their dedicated service over the years. With 85 per cent of all workers to date successfully transitioning, we’ve worked closely with our people to support them. “Holden also appreciates the partnership and assistance of the state and federal governments, along with the unions, over many years. “Right after supporting our people comes ensuring we set Holden up for success for many years to come. The best way we can honour our people and our heritage is by building a successful future and that’s exactly what we’ll be focused on when Monday rolls around. “Today, however, is about paying tribute to the generations of men and women across Holden and our supply network who have given so much to our company. Holden is the icon it is today only because of these passionate people. On behalf of everyone at Holden, I thank you for your service from the bottom of my heart,” said Mr Bernhard. Holden’s award-winning employee transition centre will remain open on the Elizabeth site for at least two years’ post factory-closure to ensure all Holden and supply chain employees have the best possible chance to successfully transition. Holden’s Executive Director of Manufacturing, Richard Phillips, paid tribute to the people and achievements of the Elizabeth plant: “The passion and dedication of the team here is second to none, it has been an honour to work alongside them. In the final years of production, we have been building categorically the best-quality cars to ever roll out of this plant, and our last car was our best. Together we achieved a string of productivity and quality awards in recent times, doing so during the closure period is testament to the skills, professionalism and dedication of the team.” Looking to the future, Holden will remain a diversified business and a powerhouse of the Australian automotive industry for many years to come. Employing approximately 1000 direct employees in Melbourne and across national zone offices, Holden will also retain its highly-skilled Design and Engineering teams, working on local and global vehicle and transportation programs. This includes retention of Holden’s world-renowned Design Studios and the famous Lang Lang vehicle Proving Ground near Melbourne in Victoria. This is in addition to the nearly 6000 people employed across Holden’s 200-strong national dealer network, ensuring Holden’s customers are continued to be looked after and all warranty and spare parts needs continue to be met as they always have been.
