Spyro the Dragon is a title character and the protagonist of the Spyro series. He appears in Spyro the Dragon, "Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!", The Legend of Spyro, and later became a part of the Skylanders series.
First introduced in the 1998 video game Spyro the Dragon, Spyro is a young, energetic, violet Dragon with orange medium-sized wings, large, curved horns (most of the time), a spiral-shaped spike on the tip of his tail, and spikes resembling a mohawk. He is noticeably smaller than most other dragons portrayed in the series; a characteristic that aids him in the first game. In the original series, most dragons are depicted as bipedal; however, Spyro is depicted as quadrupedal. In the newer series, his back-story was that two thieves were running through the dragon realms and the dragons stopped them. They had two eggs, and the dragons adopted them as their own. They later hatched into Spyro the Dragon and Sparx the Dragonfly. This Dragonfly is responsible for keeping Spyro alive and displaying his health.
Spyro the Dragon is a 1998 American platform video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation. It stars the title character, a young purple dragon named Spyro, and his dragonfly friend, Sparx, and is the first game in the Spyro the Dragon series.
The game received positive reviews from critics, with them praising the game's graphics and high replay value.
Spyro the Dragon puts players in the control of the titular Spyro, as he travels across various worlds in order to rescue his fellow dragons, recover the stolen treasure, and defeat the evil Gnasty Gnorc. Spyro has two main attacks; breathing fire and charging with his horns, which must be strategically used for defeating enemies and smashing open crates. Charging can be used against many small enemies but not against larger enemies. Likewise, fire is capable of defeating larger enemies, but can be blocked by enemies that use metal armor. Spyro is also able to glide whilst jumping to reach new areas, with some levels allowing him to fly freely in the air. Spyro's health is represented by the color of his dragonfly partner, Sparx, who also helps him pick up nearby treasure. Taking damage will cause Sparx to lose his color and disappear, leaving Spyro vulnerable, but he can recover health by eating butterflies spawned from defeating small animals. Various treasure can be found in various areas, including inside treasure chests, some of which require certain techniques to break open, or earned by defeating enemies. Enemies that have already had their gems retrieved upon revisiting areas will instead release orbs that can be collected towards earning extra lives.
Spyro: Year of the Dragon is a platform video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation in 2000. Year of the Dragon is the third installment in the Spyro series and the last Spyro game to be released for the first generation PlayStation. The game was also the last Spyro game Insomniac developed; their next title would be Ratchet & Clank for the PlayStation 2.
Named after the animal of the Chinese zodiac, which was the symbol at the time of the game's release, Year of the Dragon follows the titular purple character Spyro as he travels to the "Forgotten Worlds" after 150 magical dragon eggs are stolen from the land of the dragons by an evil sorceress. Players travel across thirty different worlds gathering gems and eggs. Year of the Dragon introduced new characters and minigames to the series, as well as offering improved graphics and music.
Upon release, the game sold more than two million units in the United States and received positive critical response. Reviewers noted the game built on the successful formula of its predecessors by adding more games and expansive environments. It was followed by the multiplatform title Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, and was later released for download on the PlayStation Store in 2009 in North America and in 2012 in Europe.
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, known in Europe as Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer and in Japan as Spyro × Sparx: Tondemo Tours (スパイロ × スパークス トンでもツアーズ, Supairo×Supākusu Tondemo Tsuāzu) is a platform video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation, and the second game in the main Spyro series following Spyro the Dragon.
