A historical society is a organization dedicated to preserving, collecting, researching, and interpreting historical information or items. Originally, these societies were created as a way to help future generations understand their heritage.
Historical societies vary in specialization, with focuses ranging from specific geographical areas such as countries or towns, universities, railways, ethnic and religious groups, to genealogy, pioneer history, and the preservation of antiques or historic buildings.
Often, many of these organizations ensure that historic architecture is preserved/restored and period houses are maintained for tours open to the public. (See: Historic preservation)
It is said that historical societies originated in Western Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. These early organizations were usually formed as societies for “lovers of Antiquity.”
The oldest historical society in the United Sates is what we now call the Massachusetts Historical Society, which was founded in 1791 by Jeremy Belknap. He was joined by nine other Bostonians who helped him create "The Historical Society," an organization truly devoted to collecting materials for the study of American history. This like-minded group gathered family papers, books, and artifacts from their personal collections which led to the creation of the nation's first historical repository. Due to the absence of any other American historical repositories during this time, the MHS took on a national role - Something that is still evident in its collections and publications. To this day, Belknap's original vision of preserving, collecting, making resources accessible, and communicating manuscripts that promote the study of Massachusetts as well as the nation is still thriving.
The Indiana Historical Society is one of the United States' oldest and largest historical societies and describes itself as "Indiana's Storyteller". Housed within the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, it is located at 450 West Ohio St. in Indianapolis, Indiana, in The Canal and White River State Park Cultural District with neighbors such as the Indiana State Museum and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. The Indiana Historical Society is the oldest state historical society west of the Allegheny Mountains.
Since 1830, the Society has been Indiana's Storyteller, connecting people to the past by collecting, preserving, interpreting, and disseminating the state's history. A private, nonprofit membership organization, the IHS maintains the nation's premier research library and archives on the history of Indiana and the Old Northwest. IHS also provides support and assistance to local museums and historical groups, publishes books and periodicals; sponsors teacher workshops; and provides youth, adult and family programming, including Indiana's participation in the National History Day Competition series. It also appoints and trains 92 county historians. The Indiana Historical Society opened a new 165,000-square-foot (15,300 m2) headquarters in downtown Indianapolis in July 1999, built on the site of the prior Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Indianapolis.
A society is a group of people involved in persistent social interaction, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. Societies are characterized by patterns of relationships (social relations) between individuals who share a distinctive culture and institutions; a given society may be described as the sum total of such relationships among its constituent members. In the social sciences, a larger society often evinces stratification or dominance patterns in subgroups.
Insofar as it is collaborative, a society can enable its members to benefit in ways that would not otherwise be possible on an individual basis; both individual and social (common) benefits can thus be distinguished, or in many cases found to overlap.
A society can also consist of like-minded people governed by their own norms and values within a dominant, larger society. This is sometimes referred to as a subculture, a term used extensively within criminology.
Indiana i/ɪndiˈænə/ is a U.S. state located in the midwestern and Great Lakes regions of North America. Indiana is the 38th largest by area and the 16th most populous of the 50 United States. Its capital and largest city is Indianapolis. Indiana was admitted to the United States as the 19th U.S. state on December 11, 1816.
Before becoming a territory, varying cultures of indigenous peoples and historic Native Americans inhabited Indiana for thousands of years. Since its founding as a territory, settlement patterns in Indiana have reflected regional cultural segmentation present in the Eastern United States; the state's northernmost tier was settled primarily by people from New England and New York, Central Indiana by migrants from the Mid-Atlantic states and from adjacent Ohio, and Southern Indiana by settlers from the Southern states, particularly Kentucky and Tennessee.
Indiana has a diverse economy with a gross state product of $298 billion in 2012. Indiana has several metropolitan areas with populations greater than 100,000 and a number of smaller industrial cities and towns. Indiana is home to several major sports teams and athletic events including the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, the NASL's Indy Eleven, the NBA's Indiana Pacers, the WNBA's Indiana Fever, the Indianapolis 500, and Brickyard 400 motorsports races.
The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, home to the Indiana Historical Society, is undergoing an exciting transformation with a major renovation in 2009 prior to the launch of its new Indiana Experience in early 2010. Indiana Experience will allow visitors to discover the fascinating stories of Indiana's past in entirely engaging, interactive ways. In 2009, visitors may still enjoy the William Henry Smith Memorial Library which will remain open, as well as selected special events taking place in the Basile Theater. The canal cafe will re-open in 2010. For those seeking Indiana gift items, please visit www.indianahistory.org.

Video from June 12, 2016 NKP 765 is a 2-8-4 steam engine and was built in 1944 for the Nickel Plate Road. It is currently owned by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This video shows 765's trip from Glenview Illinois to Janesville Wisconsin and back. It also includes footage from our DJI Phantom 3 drone. You've probably never seen a steam engine from this angle before! As far as I know, we were the only people to film the entire process of 765 turning around in Janesville. And we did it with a drone! 765 was in Chicago for the entire weekend. This video is from Sunday, June 12, 2016. The previous day (Saturday June 11, 2016) 765 was on display, under steam, at the Franklin Park Railroad Days festival. You can see our video of that by clicking on this:...

Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 S2-Class Berkshire #765 is one of the largest operating steam locomotives in the world. Based out of Fort Wayne, Indiana, the locomotive is owned and operated by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society. The locomotive was donated to the city in 1955, disguised as Nickel Plate Road 767. The City of Fort Wayne wanted to display locomotive 767 in Lawton Park, however, 767 was in horrible condition and the railroad decided to disguise sister locomotive 765 as the 767 in order to scrap the locomotive which was in much worse condition. From 1955 to 1974, the 765 sat in Lawton Park, deteriorating badly due to the harsh weather climate of the midwest. In order to save and restore the locomotive, a group of railroad enthusiasts formed the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical S...
