John Eden: Wire 400 Mix #4
May 2017
From Woofah co-founder and blogger John Eden, the fourth in our series of Wire 400 mixes is filled with “deathly dub, soundsystem seagulls and wrong-headed reggae”
London based writer John Eden does the next in our series of mixes set to celebrate 400 issues of The Wire. Blogging at uncarved.org, Eden also co-founded Woofah, a short-lived fanzine covering reggae, dubstep and grime, and, following a 20 year hiatus, he recently resurrected his Turbulent Times 'zine. On Sundays he can be found on twitter with his #ironingsoundtrack posts, which he says brings “comfort to hungover middle aged men everywhere.”
Talking of this mix, he says: “The first copy of The Wire I bought (rather than skimming it in the newsagents or round mates' houses) had Photek on the cover. I am amused and alarmed to realise this was the May 1997 issue, published exactly 20 years ago. In that time my music tastes have broadened in direct proportion to the reduction of my anxiety about keeping up with new releases. The Wire has been an integral part of that process.
“This mix is an outernational showcase of slightly wonky tracks I've acquired over the years – cheap records bought off market stalls as a teenager nestle up against more recent acquisitions direct from the labels. If there is a theme it's bass, noise, echo and reverb: deathly dub, soundsystem seagulls and wrong-headed reggae.”
