Beauty contests are often the bane of feminists who feel they do their sex a disservice, but in Guatemala they're as popular as ever, not least among young women.
The 'Flower of the Festival' competition has been taking place for 50 years in the village of Monjas.
It's very much a homemade event with the contestants sewing their own costumes, and rallying support up until the last minute.
A swirl of music, a splash of colour and the annual beauty contest in the village of Monjas is in full swing.
Young women in the village of Monjas have taken part in the 'Flor de la Feria' (Flower of the Festival) for 50 years.
The winner will claim the 'Miss Monjas' prize.
Monjas is a rural community in eastern Guatemala with most people earning their living from the land.
Girls of all ages enter the beauty contests, which are staged for different age groups.
The youngest enter for the 'Miss Chiquitita' prize.
On the day, the girls parade through the village streets on the backs of farm vehicles.
The event is covered by all the local television stations.
Some of the older generation are in favour of the competition, but don't rate the girls' intellect very highly.

"There are many pretty girls, but they do not have any intellectual capacity, they qualify for the contest and are beautiful and cultured, it is possible that some of them have brains as well as beauty."

Ana Ruth Orozco entered for the first time despite her father's opposition.
Without any extra financial support; she makes her own clothes for the contest.

"In previous years I have wanted to do it, but my father did not let me, so it has been one of my biggest wishes to join in the fiesta."
SUPER CAPTION: Ana Ruth Orozco, contestant
It is up to the locals to decide who their beauty queen is.
So the contestants get busy rallying support, in a bid to sway the judges' decision.
Ruth Palma even makes the posters for her supporters to hold during the contest.
But in spite of such bravado, she admits to feeling nervous before the big event.

"I am going to start taking some pills to calm my nerves and one to relax me so that tonight I will feel good."

The girls also choreograph their own dance show for the start of the contest.
Earlier in the day they paraded around the municipal swimming pool in bathing costumes.
Everyone in Monjas comes to the final part of the contest to watch the contestants strut their stuff along the catwalk.
Not surprisingly the girls are keen to win after the long hours they have put in making their costumes and campaigning.
However, it is the result which matters and the final word rests with the panel of judges.
As well as good looks they are also assessing the girls' character and artistic talents.
The girl who went against her father's wishes, Ana Ruth Orozco, is the lucky winner.
Two weeks after the contest is over she will be officially crowned 'Miss Monjas' 1998.

Beauty contests are often the bane of feminists who feel they do their sex a disservice, but in Guatemala they're as popular as ever, not least among young women.
The 'Flower of the Festival' competition has been taking place for 50 years in the village of Monjas.
It's very much a homemade event with the contestants sewing their own costumes, and rallying support up until the last minute.
A swirl of music, a splash of colour and the annual beauty contest in the village of Monjas is in full swing.
Young women in the village of Monjas have taken part in the 'Flor de la Feria' (Flower of the Festival) for 50 years.
The winner will claim the 'Miss Monjas' prize.
Monjas is a rural community in eastern Guatemala with most people earning their living from the land.
Girls of all ages enter the beauty contests, which are staged for different age groups.
The youngest enter for the 'Miss Chiquitita' prize.
On the day, the girls parade through the village streets on the backs of farm vehicles.
The event is covered by all the local television stations.
Some of the older generation are in favour of the competition, but don't rate the girls' intellect very highly.

"There are many pretty girls, but they do not have any intellectual capacity, they qualify for the contest and are beautiful and cultured, it is possible that some of them have brains as well as beauty."

Without any extra financial support; she makes her own clothes for the contest.

"In previous years I have wanted to do it, but my father did not let me, so it has been one of my biggest wishes to join in the fiesta."

It is up to the locals to decide who their beauty queen is.
So the contestants get busy rallying support, in a bid to sway the judges' decision.
Ruth Palma even makes the posters for her supporters to hold during the contest.
But in spite of such bravado, she admits to feeling nervous before the big event.

"I am going to start taking some pills to calm my nerves and one to relax me so that tonight I will feel good."

The girls also choreograph their own dance show for the start of the contest.
Earlier in the day they paraded around the municipal swimming pool in bathing costumes.
Everyone in Monjas comes to the final part of the contest to watch the contestants strut their stuff along the catwalk.
Not surprisingly the girls are keen to win after the long hours they have put in making their costumes and campaigning.
However, it is the result which matters and the final word rests with the panel of judges.
As well as good looks they are also assessing the girls' character and artistic talents.
The girl who went against her father's wishes, Ana Ruth Orozco, is the lucky winner.
Two weeks after the contest is over she will be officially crowned 'Miss Monjas' 1998.

Just north of Tehran you can visit the Elburz Mountains for skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer.
But the real highlights lie elsewhere. In the off-the-beaten-track city of Yazd you'll find a cityscape dotted with the ingenious wind tunnels -- which could be described as the world's first air-conditioning system - the ancient Zoroastrian site of the Towers of Silence, the magnificent Friday Mosque and a number of beautiful palaces and gardens.
Shiraz meanwhile is a lovely university town, known as the city of poets, wine, literature and flowers, and is a real delight. I particularly loved visiting the atmospheric tomb of the Persian poet Hafez. In the evenings it has a magical atmosphere as people gather to read poetry and celebrate the life of this revered poet. Shiraz is also blessed with numerous picturesque mosques and beautiful gardens.
The jewel in the Persian crown is undoubtedly the beautiful city of Esfahan, which has one of the largest squares in the world in the breathtaking Naqsh Jahan Square and probably the most stunning Islamic architecture found anywhere. Esfahan is unbelievably picturesque, with its famed bridges and lively bazaars.
ANCIENT SITES
Iran has a long and rich history, with the Persian Empire at one point ruling over 44% of the world's population. The country is home to some world-class archaeological sites, including the rock-carved tombs of Nagsh e Rostam, where Darius the great is buried, and the spectacular Achamaenid palace complex at Persepolis. This ancient palace was built by Darius the Great to celebrate events such as the Persian New Year, when representatives from the four corners of the empire would congregate. This vast site merits at least a couple of hours to explore the ruins and bas reliefs.
SCENERY
But it's not only about the cities and ancient sites, the scenery of Iran is an unexpected highlight. From beautiful picnic spots such as the Murgon Waterfalls, to fertile valleys in the Bavanat Mountains, where you can encounter Kashqai nomads and see a way of life that has changed little over centuries. In the Dena mountains around Yasuj you'll find an alpine scenery of snow-capped mountains, lakes and streams. It is well worth spending some time away from the better-known cultural sites to explore this lesser-known side of Iran. It really is a beautiful country.
THE PEOPLE
The people of Iran are another real highlight, being welcoming and keen to engage in conversation about everything from politics to football. You are likely to be surrounded by schoolkids asking you questions, offered tea and invited to share in picnics with the locals pretty much wherever you go.
If ever a people were misrepresented by a regime it would be the Iranians. Thanks to a baby boom in the 80's, over 60% of its 70 million population are aged under 30. This generation is well-educated, worldly, and exposed to global media through the internet. Walking around the streets -- which are incidentally very safe - this certainly feels like a nation on the cusp of change.
So forget about any preconceptions you may have about safety, security, or the welcome you'll receive in Iran. If ever a people were misrepresented by a regime it would be the Iranians. Thanks to a baby boom in the 80's, over 60% of its 70 million population are aged under 30. This generation is well-educated, worldly, and exposed to global media through the internet. Walking around the streets -- which are incidentally very safe - this certainly feels like a nation on the cusp of change.
So forget about any preconceptions you may have about safety, security, or the welcome you'll receive in Iran. Iran, formerly known as Persia, is a land of magical splendour, ancient architecture and Oriental hospitality. Tehran has been the capital of the Persian Empire since 1795. Founded by Mohammed Aga Khan it is a vibrant place that ranks among the most densely populated cities on Earth. Its biggest transformation in its recent history was due to religious leader, Ayatollah Khomeyni, who in 1979 established the Iranian Republic, a theocracy within the teachings of the Koran. The Saad-Abad Palace complex was the first summer residence of the Qadjarian kings. Following several extensions, from the 1920’s eighteen palaces were used by Reza Shah Pahlevi and his family. The city of Kashan prospered under the Safavid, Shah Abbas The First, who designed the Bagh-E-Fin Garden according to a model of a Persian paradise garden. Outside the city, the settlement mound of Tepe Sialk uncovered finds that can be traced back to the seventh millennium B.C. At the time of Shah Abbas, Kashan was fortified with a double city wall that contained more than six thousand buildings, plus forty mosques and three Koran schools. The Koran Gate leads to the city of Shiraz, a city of love, roses and poetry. Famous Persian poets once lived here and created works of great beauty. Today their mausoleums are visited with much reverence, such as the Hafiz Tomb. For fifty eight years, Ionic stonemasons, Babylonian brick makers, Median and Egyptian goldsmiths, worked in Persepolis, they created what was an indelible symbol of the Achaemenid Empire. The highest level contained the royal residences with living rooms, a fire temple and harem. Iran is still a land of desert, palaces and mosques, a country that is timeless, captivating and historic.

We begin our journey at the capital city's Grand Bazaar, since that's where commodities first arrive. Gelareh beelines for the market's food stands, where she samples dried fruits and nuts while waiting out the line at Moslem Restaurant, frequented by up to 5,000 kebab connoisseurs daily—well worth it for her favorite tah chin. I thought I knew what a good hospitality is like.. until I came to Iran.
"Why go to Iran?" This is a question people often asked when I tell them I was going there. I would have ask the same if it wasn't the words of mouth I heard over the years about how awesome Iran is, how incredibly friendly the people are, and how off the beaten path the whole country is.
The first day I arrived in Tehran, I was walking around the Bazaar and we were approached by several locals asking what we think about Iran, gave us free tea and cakes, and allowed us to roam their warehouses without asking for anything in return. This similar scenario happened a lot more throughout my 2 weeks time in Iran and really got me thinking about how misinformed I was about the country. It is very safe to travel in Iran, easy to do it independently as the locals will go out of their ways to help you, and the people are one of the friendliest people in the world. Not to mention how beautiful the landscape is, how stunning all the attractions are, and how off the beaten track the whole country is.
Iran is truly a special country that with restore your heart and soul and I hope that this video shows at least half of the warmth I got from the amazing people in Iran.

He started to learn Farsi in the University of Venice in Italy and travelled to Iran to complete his education, now he even has his own student which he tutors. Cloudio is planning on writing a travel guide of Tehran. This documentary follows these two friends on a routine day in Tehran and provides an interesting perspective of life in Iran’s capital city.

In April 2013, I will begin my solo motorbike adventure starting in Perth, Western Australia and ending in Tallinn, Estonia.
The journey is expected to take 12 months crossing some of the most remote and culturally rich locations in the world.
I have previously travelled to nearly 50 countries, most of which are 2nd and 3rd world countries.
I choose these countries because it is there that I more often experience the vividly intense nature of life & death and the world’s most natural beauty.
I am what you could call a YOYO - Year on, year off.
I work as a FIFO for a year, saving up all I can to then go travelling for around 12 months.
I then return back to mining to save up for another travel venture.
On this particular trip I will be using an adventure motorbike customised specifically for this journey. I will also be taking my camera kitted out with 14-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses.
I intend to capture my journey through the lens of my camera with the end goal to produce a coffee table photo book.
I am also inviting people to take part in my journey by giving me photo challenges along the way.
The photo challenges people give me are a way to directly be involved, without having to leave home. You can direct me to take any image you please so long as it is not too criminal, too dangerous or too financially draining.
Essentially, the photo challenges will help guide my adventure by influencing where I travel along the way.
I have travelled for many years and I have already broken my neck once on a motorbike and am extremely aware of issues surrounding rider safety.
I will be travelling with a special GPS device, which will allow me to be located by GPS on any map, and more importantly, it has an SOS function for emergencies.
The countries which I intend to travel are;
Australia - Timor - Indonesia - Malaysia - Borneo - Thailand - Cambodia - Vietnam - Loas - Bhutan - Nepal - India - India (Tibet) - Pakistan - (then one of three possible routes) - The Stans or Iran to Turkey or Oman to North Africa - Estonia.
This trip is a once in a lifetime motorcycle photographic adventure, and I can’t wait to get started.

The 'Flower of the Festival' competition has been taking place for 50 years in the village of Monjas. It's very much a homemade event with the contestants sewing their own costumes, and rallying support up until the last minute. A swirl of music, a splash of colour and the annual beauty contest in the village of Monjas is in full swing. The 'Flower of the Festival' competition has been taking place for 50 years in the village of Monjas.
It's very much a homemade event with the contestants sewing their own costumes, and rallying support up until the last minute.
A swirl of music, a splash of colour and the annual beauty contest in the village of Monjas is in full swing.
Young women in the village of Monjas have taken part in the 'Flor de la Feria' (Flower of the Festival) for 50 years.
The winner will claim the 'Miss Monjas' prize.
Monjas is a rural community in eastern Guatemala with most people earning their living from the land.
Girls of all ages enter the beauty contests, which are staged for different age groups.
The youngest enter for the 'Miss Chiquitita' prize.
On the day, the girls parade through the village streets on the backs of farm vehicles.
The event is covered by all the local television stations.
Some of the older generation are in favour of the competition, but don't rate the girls' intellect very highly.

"There are many pretty girls, but they do not have any intellectual capacity, they qualify for the contest and are beautiful and cultured, it is possible that some of them have brains as well as beauty."

Without any extra financial support; she makes her own clothes for the contest.

It is up to the locals to decide who their beauty queen is.
So the contestants get busy rallying support, in a bid to sway the judges' decision.
Ruth Palma even makes the posters for her supporters to hold during the contest.
But in spite of such bravado, she admits to feeling nervous before the big event.

"I am going to start taking some pills to calm my nerves and one to relax me so that tonight I will feel good."

The girls also choreograph their own dance show for the start of the contest.
Earlier in the day they paraded around the municipal swimming pool in bathing costumes.
Everyone in Monjas comes to the final part of the contest to watch the contestants strut their stuff along the catwalk.
Not surprisingly the girls are keen to win after the long hours they have put in making their costumes and campaigning.
However, it is the result which matters and the final word rests with the panel of judges.
As well as good looks they are also assessing the girls' character and artistic talents.
The girl who went against her father's wishes, Ana Ruth Orozco, is the lucky winner.
Two weeks after the contest is over she will be officially crowned 'Miss Monjas' 1998.
