The Port of London lies along the banks of the River Thames from London, England to the North Sea. Once the largest port in the world, it is currently the United Kingdom's second largest port, after Grimsby & Immingham. The port is governed by the Port of London Authority (PLA), a public trust established in 1908, whose responsibility extends over the Tideway of the River Thames.
The port can handle cruise liners, ro-ro ferries and cargo of all types including containers, timber, paper, vehicles, aggregates, crude oil, petroleum products, liquefied petroleum gas, coal, metals, grain and other dry and liquid bulk materials. In 2012 London was the second largest port in the United Kingdom by tonnage handled (43.7 million).
The port is not located in one area - it stretches along the tidal Thames, including central London, with many individual wharfs, docks, terminals and facilities built incrementally over the centuries. As with many similar historic European ports, such as Antwerp and Rotterdam, the bulk of activities has steadily moved downstream towards the open sea, as ships have grown larger and other city uses take up land closer to the city's centre.
The Port of London Authority (PLA) is a self-funding public trust established by The Port of London Act 1908 to govern the Port of London. Its responsibility extends over the Tideway of the River Thames and its continuation (the Kent/Essex strait). It maintains and supervises navigation, and protects the river's environment.
The PLA originally operated all enclosed dock systems on the river (except the Regent's Canal Dock), but these have long been closed to commercial traffic, with the exception of Port of Tilbury, which was privatised in 1992.
The PLA's responsibility extends from a point marked by an obelisk just downstream of Teddington Lock (the upstream limit of the tidal river) to the end of the Kent/Essex strait of the North Sea (between Margate to the south and Gunfleet Lighthouse, near Frinton-on-Sea, to the north,) a total of about 95 miles (150 km). The PLA does not cover the Medway or the Swale.
From the City of London, via the Thames Conservancy, the PLA has inherited ownership of the bed of the river and foreshore from Teddington to the Yantlet Line (between Southend and Grain).
London i/ˈlʌndən/ is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. It was founded by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms Greater London, a region of England governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The conurbation also covers two English counties: the small district of the City of London and the county of Greater London. The latter constitutes the vast majority of London, though historically it was split between Middlesex (a now abolished county), Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.
St. Catherine or Katherine may refer to a number of saints named Catherine, or:
The word authority (derived from the Latin word auctoritas) can be used to mean the right to exercise power given by the State (in the form of government, judges, police officers, etc.), or by academic knowledge of an area (someone can be an authority on a subject).
When the word Authority is used in the name of an organization, this name usually refers to the governing body upon which such authority is vested; for example, the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority or the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. It is also the right to do something.
In government, the term authority is often used interchangeably with power. However, their meanings differ: while power is defined as "the ability to influence somebody to do something that he/she would not have done", authority refers to a claim of legitimacy, the justification and right to exercise that power. For example, while a mob has the power to punish a criminal, for example by lynching, people who believe in the rule of law consider that only a court of law has the authority to punish a criminal legally as the law says.
Find out about what happens on the tidal river Thames and the work of the Port of London Authority (PLA). The river is home to: the UK's second biggest port; busiest inland waterway for freight and passengers; a major centre for rowing; and can be a stage for global events. PLA operations to help keep the river safe include port control, providing ships' pilots, riverbed surveying, driftwood clearance and river traffic control for major events or large ship movements.

2012 was a memorable year for the Thames and the Port of London Authority. On 3 June, after months of planning, preparations and rehearsals we oversaw the safe staging of the biggest river Pageant the Thames had ever seen in celebration of HM Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee. Then all eyes were on London for the Olympics, where the Thames took centre stage in the build up to the Capital's moment in history, with cruise ship arrivals and the Olympic torch relay. Our latest short film gives an insight into the build up to the events and the events themselves.

The last in the series of three debates, curated by architectural writer Ellis Woodman in partnership with The Architecture Review and part of the Architecture for All public programme at the Old Royal Naval College. Working on the River: London’s prosperity was historically dependent on the Thames’ role as a site of trade and industry. Since the development of container shipping in the 1960’s much of that activity has migrated downriver. The Thames, nonetheless, continues to offer rich opportunities to serve as more than just a vista for the housing ranged along it. A number of London’s poorest communities address the river. Can it, once again, offer them a valuable source of employment? With an increasing need to find sustainable means of transport for people, goods and waste are...

December 1, 2011 at The Skyscraper Museum The skyscraper is perhaps the most recognizable icon of the modern urban landscape. Providing offices, homes, restaurants, and shopping to thousands of inhabitants, modern skyscrapers function as small cities- with infrastructure not unlike that hidden beneath our streets. Clean water is provided to floors thousands of feet in the sky; elevators move people swiftly and safely throughout the building; and telecom networks allow virtual meetings with people on other continents. How are these services-considered essential, but largely taken for granted- possible in such a complex structure? What does it really take to sustain human life at such enormous heights? Exploring the interconnected systems that make life livable in the sky is the task of Ka...
