Attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan
The attempted assassination of United States President Ronald Reagan occurred on March 30, 1981, 69 days into his presidency. While leaving a speaking engagement at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., President Reagan and three others were shot and wounded by John Hinckley, Jr. The most seriously wounded victim, James Brady, died decades later of complications related to his injuries. Hinckley's motivations for the attack was to impress actress Jodie Foster, who he had developed an obsession over after seeing her in the film Taxi Driver.
Reagan was shot in the chest, below the left underarm. He suffered a punctured lung and heavy internal bleeding, but prompt medical attention allowed him to recover quickly. No formal invocation of presidential succession took place, although Secretary of State Alexander Haig controversially stated that he was "in control here" while Vice President George H. W. Bush returned to Washington.
There were no fatalities in the immediate aftermath of the attack, but White House Press Secretary James Brady, who was left paralyzed from a gunshot wound, died in 2014 of causes a Virginia medical examiner found were directly related to the 1981 shooting. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity on charges of attempting to assassinate the President and remains confined to a psychiatric facility. In January 2015, federal prosecutors announced that they would not charge Hinckley with Brady's death, despite the medical examiner's classification of his death as a homicide.

The leader of Bulgaria's Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) party, Ahmed Dogan, was assaulted by a gunman while on stage at the National Palace of Culture (NDK) in Sofia, according to the Sofia Globe. Hinckley was obsessed with actress Jodie Foster and did it to impress her. Reagan had only been president for two months. He was hit by a ricochet that went into his chest, and he nearly died.
Hinckley's weapon was a cheap, six-shot revolver firing a low-powered bullet. He had no military or police training and was not a gun expert. In a couple seconds, he managed to shoot Reagan and three other people with just six shots.
Regan's press secretary, James Brady, was shot in the head and paralyzed. He later became perhaps the country's biggest gun control advocate, founding a major gun control organization and helping through the 1993 passage of new federal gun laws that made it harder for criminals and insane people to buy guns. American conservatives were so outraged by this law (dubbed "The Brady Bill") and by the 1993 federal Assault Weapons Ban that they mobilized and voted the democrats out of power in the House of Representatives in the 1994 elections. Ever since, the democrats have been scared to push for gun control laws.

After taking part in the governing coalition, the party switched to the opposition following the 2009 elections, which were won by the conservative Gerb party of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
Lots of buzz about this video last night, but I didn't actually see it until today — and it's definitely noteworthy, if a bit puzzling. The gun misfired, but it was a gas pistol, used to fire teargas cartridges only; it's a non-lethal weapon in most applications, although at the range the assassin had, it likely would have killed Ahmed Dogan. The would-be Czolgolsz also had knives on him, not that it did much good, as the crowd began beating him once he was subdued. For a man with drug and robbery convictions, the perp didn't seem very professional, but maybe that's why he has convictions, too.
The odd choice of weapon had some speculating that the entire thing was a stunt:
*Some politicians and analysts being interviewed by local media in Bulgaria have speculated that the attack was not an assassination attempt and may even have been staged.
Well, that should be a fun story to follow in eastern Europe over the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, we can watch the video and marvel that the gun didn't fire, and wonder what was going through the politician's mind when all he heard was the click.

Enimehmedov was also reportedly beaten by delegates and other officials in the crowd, according to Noinite, a Sofia news agency. "He was not in a good shape, there was blood on his face," said Prosecutor Nikolay Kokinov. "He told us his version about what motivated him, but I will not discuss it at this point."
Along with the gas pistol, Enimehmedov was also armed with two knives. The Bourgas native has two prior convictions, including causing bodily harm in 2006 and drug possession in 2010, the Sofia Globe reports.
As for the 58-year-old official, he is doing fine. "Ahmed Dogan is in good health. Everything is under control," MRF official Ceyhan Ibryamov told Reuters on Saturday.

A gunman reportedly attempted to assassinate the leader of Bulgaria's Turkish ethnic party during a televised conference on Saturday.
The leader of Bulgaria's Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) party, Ahmed Dogan, was assaulted by a gunman while on stage at the National Palace of Culture (NDK) in Sofia, according to the Sofia Globe. The assailant, 25-year-old Oktai Enimehmedov, climbed onstage and held a gun to Dogan's head, but the gun reportedly got stuck and was unable to shoot.
The Times also reports that the gun appeared to misfire, giving Dogan enough time to bat away the gunman's arm before he was assisted by security guards.
Dogan and the gunman wrestled on stage before security raced to apprehend the assailant, amid loud boos from the crowd, according to The Sun.
Enimehmedov was also reportedly beaten by delegates and other officials in the crowd, according to Noinite, a Sofia news agency. "He was not in a good shape, there was blood on his face," said Prosecutor Nikolay Kokinov. "He told us his version about what motivated him, but I will not discuss it at this point."
Along with the gas pistol, Enimehmedov was also armed with two knives. The Bourgas native has two prior convictions, including causing bodily harm in 2006 and drug possession in 2010, the Sofia Globe reports.
As for the 58-year-old official, he is doing fine. "Ahmed Dogan is in good health. Everything is under control," MRF official Ceyhan Ibryamov told Reuters on Saturday.
