Trying to keep track of Kaitlin Koester in West Lutheran High School's band room will make your head spin. One minute, she's at the piano bench for one song; the next minute, she's slamming two cymbals together for another. "I've played piano since I was in third grade," said the 18-year-old. She said when she got to high school she was told, "Oh, you can learn an instrument, but start off in percussion." Rather than stick to one instrument, she chose to stay in percussion, where she can play a variety of them. She is also in the school's show choir and concert choir. Just as she takes on many tasks in the fine arts department, Kaitlin is equally as busy in the classroom and beyond. "Some of my harder classes would probably be my PSEO calculus and I took PSEO world history. I'm taking AP literature," she said. She's also class president, as well as president of West Lutheran's National Honor Society. "You just have to learn how to manage all your time and you need to set aside time for everything," she said. "You definitely can't procrastinate." Kaitlin's social studies teacher Nathan Veach said, besides her good grades, Kaitlin's thirst for knowledge and desire to get involved are admirable. "I think she's a teacher's dream and she's a classmate's dream," he said. "Her humility just reflects around her. She's, like, so unassuming and yet she's willing to raise her hand, participate, go that extra mile." Kaitlin said that attitude can only help her in the future. "I think it'll help me be more open to trying new things in college," she said. "I go to a very small high school; there's not many things to do, but maybe in college I'll be more open to trying different things and learning new things." Kaitlin hasn't decided where she wants to go to college yet. She does know she wants to become a physical therapist.
