New Delhi

New Delhi (ⁱ/ˌnjuː ˈdɛli/) is a municipality and district in Delhi which serves as the capital and seat of government of India. In addition, it also serves as the seat of Government of Delhi.

The foundation stone of the city was laid by George V, Emperor of India during the Delhi Durbar of 1911. It was designed by British architects, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. The new capital was inaugurated on 13 February 1931, by India's Viceroy Lord Irwin.

Although colloquially Delhi and New Delhi as names are used interchangeably to refer to the jurisdiction of NCT of Delhi, these are two distinct entities, and the latter is a small part of the former.

New Delhi has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.

Establishment

Calcutta (now Kolkata) was the capital of India during the British Raj until December 1911. However, Delhi had served as the political and financial centre of several empires of ancient India and the Delhi Sultanate, most notably of the Mughal Empire from 1649 to 1857. During the early 1900s, a proposal was made to the British administration to shift the capital of the British Indian Empire (as it was officially called) from Calcutta to Delhi. Unlike Calcutta, which was located on the eastern coast of India, Delhi was at the center of northern India and the Government of British India felt that it would be logistically easier to administer India from the latter rather than the former.

Delhi

Delhi (/ˈdɛli/, Hindustani pronunciation: [d̪ɪlliː] Dilli), officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, is the capital territory of India. Delhi is historically and culturally connected to both the Upper Doab of the Yamuna-Ganges river system and the Punjab region. It is bordered by Haryana on three sides and by Uttar Pradesh to the east. It is the largest city in India in terms of geographical area - about 1,484 square kilometres (573 sq mi). It has a population of about 16.3 million, making it the second most populous city and second most populous urban agglomeration in India and 3^rd largest urban area in the world. Such is the nature of urban expansion in Delhi that its growth has expanded beyond the NCT to incorporate towns in neighbouring states and at its largest extent can count a population of about 25 million residents as of 2014.

Delhi has been continuously inhabited since the 6th century BC. Through most of its history, Delhi has served as a capital of various kingdoms and empires. It has been captured, ransacked and rebuilt several times, particularly during the medieval period, and modern Delhi is a cluster of a number of cities spread across the metropolitan region.

Google Maps

Google Maps is a desktop web mapping service developed by Google. It offers satellite imagery, street maps, 360° panoramic views of streets (Street View), real-time traffic conditions (Google Traffic), and route planning for traveling by foot, car, bicycle (in beta), or public transportation.

Google Maps began as a C++ desktop program designed by Lars and Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen at Where 2 Technologies. In October 2004, the company was acquired by Google, which converted it into a web application. After additional acquisitions of a geospatial data visualization company and a realtime traffic analyzer, Google Maps was launched in February 2005. The service's front end utilizes JavaScript, XML, and Ajax. Google Maps offers an API that allows maps to be embedded on third-party websites, and offers a locator for urban businesses and other organizations in numerous countries around the world. Google Map Maker allows users to collaboratively expand and update the service's mapping worldwide.

Connacht

Connacht or Connaught/ˈkɒnəkt/ (Irish: Connacht or Cúige Chonnacht) is one of the provinces of Ireland, situated in the west of the country. Up to the 9th century it consisted of several independent major kingdoms (Lúighne, Uí Maine, and Iarthar Connacht). Between the reigns of Conchobar mac Taidg Mór (died 882) and his descendant, Aedh mac Ruaidri Ó Conchobair (reigned 1228–33), it became a kingdom under the rule of the Uí Briúin Ai dynasty, whose ruling sept adopted the surname Ua Conchobair.

At its greatest extent, it incorporated the often independent Kingdom of Breifne, as well as vassalage from the lordships of western Mide and west Leinster. The Kingdom of Connacht collapsed in the 1230s because of civil war within the royal dynasty, which enabled widespread Norman settlement under Richard Mór de Burgh, 1st Baron of Connaught.

The province of Connacht has the greatest number of Irish language speakers at between 5–10% (40,000–55,000) of the population. There are Gaeltacht areas in Counties Galway and Mayo.

The former location of the head quarters of the British Raj, it is counted as one of the top heritage structures in the capital city of Delhi. Today it is the 4th most expensive office destination and the 5th highest priced market in the world. Connaught Places, is instantly recognizable on any map of Delhi, as a big circle in the middle with radial roads spreading out in all directions, it house some legendary restaurants like Embassy, and cinemas like Odeon, Regal and Rivoli, (also Rivoli is now PVR Rivoli, there is also PVR Plaza which is in CP). Connaught place is Delhi's pride, there is nothing better than sitting in Central park on a warm winter afternoon. The Central Park in CP or Connaught place has ben rebuilt in 2005/6 after the construction of the Delhi Metro station, Rajiv Chowk, which in a way is like the heart of the metro network in Delhi, it is also the interchange for the yellow and blue lines of the metro and is one of the largest and busiest stations on the entire network. Today, right above the station in Central park, cultural events are regularly hosted. CP, is a hub, most youngsters planning an evening out do connect here, and then kick off the evening. Once you reach circle, you will notice this shop on your right. Timings: 3 pm to 10 pm. 7.Shukla Paan Palace: Serves many varieties of paan- including fire paan. For the first time i tried fire paan, it was exciting and fun filled experience. Address: Facing Odeon cinema, Connaught place. Pandey’s paan: One of the oldest paan shop of Delhi, in existence since pre independence. USP: Paan supplier to the president house. Price is also reasonable at Rs 30 per Paan. You will get to see photographs of presidents since independence, who have relished paan at this Paan shop. Address: Shop number: 3, North Avenue, New MP’s market, Delhi. It is often abbreviated as CP and houses the headquarters of several Indian firms. Its surroundings occupy a place of pride, counted among the top heritage structures of the city. It was developed as a showpiece of Lutyens' Delhi featuring a Central Business District. Named after the Duke of Connaught, the construction work was started in 1929 and completed in 1933. It was renamed as the Rajiv Chowk after the late Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Today, Connaught Place is one of the most vibrant business districts of Delhi. It is the fifth most expensive office destination in the world, according to global property consultant CBRE Group. The area is instantly recognizable on any map of Delhi, being the big circle in the middle with radial roads spreading out in all directions, like spokes on a wheel. Eight separate roads lead out from Connaught's inner circle, named Parliament Street and Radial Roads 1 through 7. Twelve different roads lead out from Connaught Circus, the outer ring; the most well-known of these is Janpath, the continuation of Radial Road 1. It is a logically planned area and houses one of India's first under ground market-Palika Bazaar (Municipal Market), named after nagarpalika. The Outer Circle is known as the Connaught Circus (officially Indira Chowk),having rows of restaurants, shops and hotels, the Middle Circle has offices and small eating outlets. The central park of Connaught Place has long been a venue for cultural events. In 2005-06, it was rebuilt after the construction of the Delhi Metro station below it. That station, Rajiv Chowk, is the interchange for the Yellow and Blue lines of the Metro and one of the largest and busiest stations in the network.Connaught Place today plays host to various cultural programs in the central park area . Also the only Starbucks Coffee store in Delhi is in connaught place in Hamilton house A block .The store within a few days of opening has attracted a huge no of people just to try Starbucks which in turn leads to more people coming to CP .In January 2013 CP also hosted the 'dilli ke pakhwaan' on Baba Kharak Singh Marg which proved to be a great success. Imran-Kat had to stall shooting in CP for two hours due to crowds and chaos After '3 Idiots' and 'Aisha' being shot in Connaught Place, it was the turn of the Imran Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan' to make its way there on Tuesday. However, while the first two films kept it relatively quiet and didn't cause any disruptions, this shoot was during peak morning traffic and saw swelling crowds and traffic jams. When Kat's plane landed here at around 5:30am, a light fog had enveloped the city. By 8am, Kat met Imran over a plate of spicy momos, right in the middle of E Block at Connaught Place -- of course, Delhi's regular rush hour had begun. As director Ali Abbas Zafar's team captured the rendezvous, the masses wanted to catch a glimpse of Imran (in his usual light-coloured jeans and shirt combo) and Kat (sporting boyfriend jeans as a welcome change). In no time, the crowd swelled and the traffic jam doubled, with policemen being unable to control the situation. While Kat smiled and waved at the crowd, Imran requested them to be a little less noisy, and bouncers hit a man while pushing the crowd aside. The man later yelled at the cops, saying he was standing there not to add to the mess, but to be picked up by a friend. Owing to the maddening rush, noisy roads and confusion that stretched till 1pm, the film's crew took a two-hour break. They resumed shooting inside a CP showroom, where the two had to shoot a shopping scene, and wrapped up around 6pm. The team's slated to shoot at various locations of Delhi -- around monuments, Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazaar, etc -- for the next 15 days. (With inputs from Ranjit Kumar)
