The south bank of London's Thames River is a great place to walk. Start at Tower Bridge and follow the Queen's Way past City Hall, the Hays Gallery, HMS Belfast, London Bridge, Borough Market, Southwerk Cathedral, the Globe Theater, the Tate Modern Gallery, and the Millennium Footbridge. Cross the river and head to St. Paul's Cathedral. This leg of the walk is a little over 2 miles. If you are up to it, head for Trafalgar Square and all the interesting sights along the way. Altogether, its about eight miles but worth every step.

The South Bank is an entertainment and commercial district of Central London, England, next to the River Thames opposite the City of Westminster. It forms a narrow, unequal strip of riverside land within the London Borough of Lambeth and the London Borough of Southwark where it joins Bankside. As with most central London districts its edges evolve and are informally defined however its central area is bounded by Westminster Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. Its name was adopted during the Festival of Britain over the local less attractive name of 'Lambeth Marsh'; it includes the County Hall, complex with the Sea Life London Aquarium, the London Dungeon, Jubilee Gardens and the London Eye, the Southbank Centre, Royal Festival Hall and National Theatre, among its long list of attractions. Both the County Hall and the Shell Centre contain major residential parts.
South Bank developed later than the north bank of the river due to its formerly often waterlogged condition in winter, and throughout its history has twice functioned as an entertainment district, interspersed by around a hundred years of wharfs, domestic industry and manufacturing being its main use. Restoration began in 1917 with the construction of County Hall at Lambeth replacing the Lion Brewery, its Coade stone symbol was retained and placed on a pedestal at Westminster Bridge and is known as the South Bank Lion. The pedestrianised embankment is The Queen's Walk which is part of the Albert Embankment built not only for public drainage but to raise the whole tract of land and prevent flooding.

Vans
Vans is an American manufacturer of shoes, based in Cypress, California—the company also produces apparel, and other products such as T-shirts, hoodies, socks, hats, and backpacks. As of August 2013, the brand is active in the actions sports industry and sponsors skateboard, surf, snow, BMX, and motocross teams. Since 1996, the company has also been the primary sponsor of the annual Vans Warped Tour traveling rock festival.
History
Founding
On March 16, 1966, at 704 East Broadway in Anaheim, California, U.S., brothers Paul Van Doren and James Van Doren, Gordon Lee, and Serge D'Elia opened the first Vans store under the name The Van Doren Rubber Company. Paul Van Doren and D'Elia owned the majority of the company, while James Van Doren and Lee each owned a 10 percent stake. The business manufactured shoes and sold them directly to the public. On that first morning, twelve customers purchased Vans deck shoes, which are now known as "Authentic". The company displayed three styles of shoes, which were priced between US$2.49 and US$4.99, but on the opening day, the company had only manufactured display models without any inventory ready to sell—the store rack boxes were actually empty.

Tate Modern
Tate Modern is a modern art gallery located in London. It is Britain's national gallery of international modern art and forms part of the Tate group (together with Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives and Tate Online). It is based in the former Bankside Power Station, in the Bankside area of the London Borough of Southwark. Tate holds the national collection of British art from 1900 to the present day and international modern and contemporary art.
History
The galleries are housed in the former Bankside Power Station, which was originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect of Battersea Power Station, and built in two stages between 1947 and 1963. The power station closed in 1981. In 1992 The Tate Gallery at the British National Art Museum proposed a competition to build a new building for modern art. The purpose for the new building would help with the ever-expanding collection on modern and contemporary art. In 1995 it was announced that Herzog & de Meuron had won the competition with their simple design. The architects decided to reinvent the current building instead of demolishing it. The Tate modern is an example of adaptive reuse, the process of finding new life in old buildings. The building itself still resembles the 20th century factory in style from the outside and that is reflected on the inside by the taupe walls, steel girders and concrete floors. The façade of the building is made out of 4.2 million bricks that are separated by groups of thin vertical windows that help create a dramatic light inside.

South Bank, London in HD
The south bank of London's Thames River is a great place to walk. Start at Tower Bridge and follow the Queen's Way past City Hall, the Hays Gallery, HMS Belfast, London Bridge, Borough Market, Southwerk Cathedral, the Globe Theater, the Tate Modern Gallery, and the Millennium Footbridge. Cross the river and head to St. Paul's Cathedral. This leg of the walk is a little over 2 miles. If you are up to it, head for Trafalgar Square and all the interesting sights along the way. Altogether, its about eight miles but worth every step.

London is vast and there are so many things to do that for the first timer it can be a bit overwhelming. Here are 6 of our top things to do.
London Zoo is the world's oldest scientific zoo, it opened in 1828! It was originally used as a collection for scientific study but has since been known for its involvement in helping the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats.
London is a shopping mecca, and the best places here range from the high end of Bond Street through to Oxford Street and the alternative markets at Camden Lock. No matter what your tastes, London has it.
The iconic London Eye is a giant ferris wheel on the South Bank of the Thames. A ride gives you a fantastic view over the City, especially of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. In the busy summer period make sure you book in advance, because the ques can get really long.
If it’s your first time in London you owe it to yourself to get around and see the sights. A sightseeing bus will get you round quickly and give lots of extra information, but our recommendation is to make a day of it and explore the city on foot.
Along the South Bank just a few minutes walk from the London Eye is The Sea Life London Aquarium. It’s perfect for those who are curious about the wonders under the sea and the ongoing conservation projects that the Aquarium takes part in.
The Natural History Museum houses a vast collection of fossils, samples and exhibits that charts billions of years of Earth’s history. You’ll never see it all in a single day, so decide which exhibitions interest you most and head to those first.
Entry is free and we think that the museum is a great way to get kids interested in the natural sciences.

South Bank, London in HD
The south bank of London's Thames River is a great place to walk. Start at Tower Bridge and follow the Queen's Way past City Hall, the Hays Gallery, HMS Belfast, London Bridge, Borough Market, Southwerk Cathedral, the Globe Theater, the Tate Modern Gallery, and the Millennium Footbridge. Cross the river and head to St. Paul's Cathedral. This leg of the walk is a little over 2 miles. If you are up to it, head for Trafalgar Square and all the interesting sights along the way. Altogether, its about eight miles but worth every step.

Start at Tower Bridge and follow the Queen's Way past City Hall, the Hays Gallery, HMS Belfast, London Bridge, Borough Market, Southwerk Cathedral, the Globe Theater, the Tate Modern Gallery, and the Millennium Footbridge. Cross the river and head to St. Paul's Cathedral. This leg of the walk is a little over 2 miles. If you are up to it, head for Trafalgar Square and all the interesting sights along the way. Altogether, its about eight miles but worth every step.

Winstan Whitter – filmmaker, London skate historian and the brains behind the incredible Rolling Through the Decades – has teamed up with LLSB and AHRC-funded project ‘You Can’t Move History, You Can Secure The Future’ to put together a film about Southbank, its resonance with generations of skateboarders and the recent battle to save the space from development.
Featuring interviews with not only some of the skaters who have frequented over the years (such as Jason Caines, Jenna Selby, Domas Glatkauskas, Joey Pressey, Henry Edwards-Wood and Louis Woodhead), but also the lawyers, community activists and other assorted behind the scenes types who helped keep the space safe for skateboarders, this is well worth putting the kettle on and kicking back for. And, with the new obstacles put in last week only adding to the Undercroft’s grimy allure, get down this winter and remind yourself of why it has such a legendary status!

You Can Secure The Future’ is an AHRC funded project which looks at young people’s attachment to subcultural spaces (in this instance the undercroft on London’s South bank) and the way in which these attachment are communicated to mainstream organisations such as heritage organisations, urban planners, politicians and the media. Academics from Sussex, UEA, Glasgow and Newcastle worked together with the community film makers the Brazen Bunch and the Heritage Lottery Fund to ask how young people conceptualise their cultural heritage, the methods by which they have sought to communicate their feelings, and the way in which these messages have been understood and acted on by formal institutions. This website brings together debate between the heritage and planning sector, youth and screen education organisations, campaign and community groups about how young people might be more effectively engaged and listened to regarding heritage and cultural issues.
