Duck and Cover is a civil defense social guidance film that is often popularly mischaracterized as propaganda. Film production started in 1951 and it gained its first public screening in January 1952 during the era after the Soviet Union began nuclear testing in 1949 and the Korean War (1950–53) was in full swing.
Funded by the US Federal Civil Defense Administration, it was written by Raymond J. Mauer, directed by Anthony Rizzo of Archer Productions, narrated by actor Robert Middleton and made with the help of schoolchildren from New York City and Astoria, New York.
It was shown in schools as the cornerstone of the government's "duck and cover" public awareness campaign, being aired to generations of United States school children from the early 1950s until 1991, which marked the end of the Cold War.
The US government contracted with Archer to produce Duck and Cover. The film is now in the public domain, and as such is widely available through Internet sources such as YouTube, as well as on DVD.
They use to teach this to us in grade school during the 50's and 60's.

This is a project that a friend and I did in March of 2007. The assignment was to create something that might be in the 1950s, and so we did a "legomation" version (shortened somewhat) of the infamous "Duck and Cover" video from 1952, in which Bert the Turtle told kids to "duck and cover" to avoid vaporization from a thermonuclear device. :) Footage (excluding the first nuclear blast footage) is all shot from a Panasonic digital camera, made into video through GraphicConverter at 8 fps, and then edited (and sound added) in iMovie. It is HIGHLY recommeneded that you watch the original first.

During that time, the United States feared about the Atomic Bomb being tested by the Soviet Union. I remixed the film's theme as well as the Narrator and Bert the Turtle.

In this found footage video, the absurdity of American post-war propaganda movies is emphasized by deconstructing the movie entitled "Duck and Cover" (1952). Theme song and the images are taken from "Duck and Cover" (1952), while other sounds are recorded from a circuit bended toy. Video and sound is edited by Onur Çiftci. This video was displayed in a group exhibition "İkametgah Kadıköy 2" (2012; Istanbul, Turkey).

A music video using the Duck and Cover civil defense film from 1952. It is set to and edited version of Tool's "Vicarious." This version of Vicarious is my own edited version making it shorter and sweeter. If you'd like it I can upload it somewhere for you. This is purely for fun - cause honestly how is ducking and covering gonna save you from a freaking nuke??

From: ATOMIC SCARE FILMS VOL 1! The immortal Duck and Cover opens with a musical animated sequence in which a happy-go-lucky turtle is tormented by a monkey wielding dynamite, to show kids how to "duck and cover" in case of nuclear attack. To demonstrate, we are shown endless drills of boys and girls ducking and covering in the classroom, outdoors, and at a picnic as soon as the narrator yells, "Duck and cover!" The United States Office of Civil Defense released this film in 1951 to explain the dangers of the atomic age threat, the effects of radiation and how to protect oneself if caught in the open or in the home. Unlike "Duck & Cover", this film was more suited for an adult audience. . . I had to think because you had to ask
What now to do with them I'm so distressed
Now be surprised we knew it had to come
I thank to god I'm not really able to die
Standing like a monkey you know
Laughin like hyenas at night
So laugh with everything
But be shaking his hand all the while
I took my time just like a coffee break
I thought it was and that's my mistake
Can't get my ark done two by two
The end is coming man can't you even fucking say die
Standing like a statue you know
Laughin like hyenas at night
So laugh with everything
But be shaking his hand all the while
Most likely leads me to believe these lies than to succeed
And now we hate to see you grow (seem to) What the hell we hate to seem to grow ???
Before I talked to you we were doing fine
No harm nobody just a couple of times
And there's nothing really here for me to do
We stand there watching porn to make it look like we'd died
Standing like a statue you know
We've been laughin like hyenas at night
So laugh with everything
But be shaking his hand all the while
