China

China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces; five autonomous regions; four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing); two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau); and claims sovereignty over Taiwan.

Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.

Federal Reserve System

The Federal Reserve System‍—‌also known as the Federal Reserve or simply as the Fed‍—‌is the central banking system of the United States. It was created on December 23, 1913, with the enactment of the Federal Reserve Act, largely in response to a series of financial panics, particularly a severe panic in 1907. Over time, the roles and responsibilities of the Federal Reserve System have expanded, and its structure has evolved. Events such as the Great Depression in the 1930s were major factors leading to changes in the system.

The U.S. Congress established three key objectives for monetary policy in the Federal Reserve Act: maximizing employment, stabilizing prices, and moderating long-term interest rates. The first two objectives are sometimes referred to as the Federal Reserve's dual mandate. Its duties have expanded over the years, and as of 2009 also include supervising and regulating banks, maintaining the stability of the financial system and providing financial services to depository institutions, the U.S. government, and foreign official institutions. The Fed conducts research into the economy and releases numerous publications, such as the Beige Book.

Russell Investments

Russell Investments is a Seattle-based subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group, which acquired it for $2.7 billion in 2014. The company is a global asset management firm, founded in 1936. Russell Investments is the creator of the Russell Indexes. It also provides investment consulting and other financial services to institutional investors and to individuals through a network of partners.

History

1936 — Local businessman Frank Russell starts a small brokerage firm in Tacoma, Washington.

1958 — George Russell joins his grandfather's firm, Frank Russell Company. Six months later, George becomes chairman, president and CEO when his grandfather dies. The company has two employees — George and an assistant.

1974 — Russell's institutional consulting business grows from a single client to 40 major U.S. clients, including AT&T and General Motors.

1979 — Russell initiates its global presence with the opening of an office in London.

1980 — Russell launches its investment management business in response to a client's request for funds that provide a fully diversified and packaged blend of investment managers. Russell begins leveraging its research of outside managers to create a manager-of-managers investment process for smaller retirement plans and individuals.

Keiser Report

The Keiser Report is a financial news and analysis show on RT UK and the RT network, hosted by Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert. It has been running since September 2009, with three new show every week. Herbert (announced on a December 2012 episode as his wife) is the co-host; she banters with Keiser on headlines and commentary.

Each episode is divided into two parts. In the first half, Keiser and Herbert alternately discuss a current financial topic, comment on financial media reports, and provide commentary on the actions of bankers. The second half features a guest interview, either face-to-face in the studio or through video conferencing, conducted by Keiser.

The Independent describes the show as "mischievously seditious" and Keiser as "America's most outrageous political pundit".

An episode broadcast in September 2011 featured an interview with the comedian Rosanne Barr, who stated that her solution to the financial crisis was to "bring back the guillotine".

According to Forbes magazine, the economist Sandeep Jaitly of the Gold Standard Institute was forced to resign following comments made on Keiser's show.

This week, the Fed voted to raise the benchmark interest rate again by another one-quarter of a percent – the third rate increase this year – and indicated that they may raise it yet again before year’s end. The biggest immediate impact of the rate rises is it will tend to slow the housing market – a market crippled in 2008 – that has only lurched back to life last year. But the latest figures show US housing starts are now down 5.5% - having fallen for the last 3 months – the very months when they should be rising. According to a rather sarcastic story in Bloomberg, the Fed isn’t sure why inflation is staying so low – but it is going to raise rates anyway, risking a recession. Why? Because raising rates decreases the amount of money in the country. Lowering rates stimulates the economy by pumping more money into the overall economy. Why make any changes? The Fed should be happy with the current conditions – record low inflation and record low unemployment figures. In fact, the only major economic negative is the GDP number, which came in at 1.2% in the first quarter – about half of the previous quarter. But guess what, raising interest rates throws an additional negative factor on growth. Why do it, then? Look at this chart of U.S. inflation. The Fed’s inflation target has been 2% the last 8 years, but the Fed’s monetary policy hasn’t even been able to hit that for over 5 years – with the one exception – the post-Trump election spending bounce. How about our economic peers? This week, the Bank of England voted to keep its interest rates at their record low of .25%, despite British inflation rising to a 4-year high. The same for Japan – no changes. On Thursday, the Swiss announced that it would maintain it’s “ultra-loose” interest rates held below zero percent. China is even lowering its interest rates. No, the only logical reason for the Fed’s rate raising policy is – sadly – a political one. The effects of these rate changes are not felt for 18 to 24 months. Let’s see now, where will we be 2 years from now, summer of 2019? Oh yes, we will be 7 months out from the first presidential primaries when President Trump will be seeking re-election.
