Cockfight
A cockfight is a blood sport between two roosters (cocks), or more accurately gamecocks, held in a ring called a cockpit. The history of raising fowl for fighting goes back 6,000 years. The first documented use of the word gamecock, denoting use of the cock as to a “game”, a sport, pastime or entertainment, was recorded in 1646, after the term “cock of the game” used by George Wilson, in the earliest known book on the sport of cockfighting in The Commendation of Cocks and Cock Fighting in 1607. But it was during Magellan's voyage of discovery of the Philippines in 1521 when modern cockfighting was first witnessed and documented by Antonio Pigafetta, Magellan's chronicler, in the kingdom of Taytay.
The combatants, referred to as gamecocks, are specially bred birds, conditioned for increased stamina and strength. The comb and wattle are cut off in order to meet show standards of the American Gamefowl Society and the Old English Game Club and to prevent freezing in colder climates (the standard emerged from the older practice of severing the comb, wattles, and earlobes of the bird in order to remove anatomical vulnerabilities, similar to the practice of docking a dog's tail and ears).

6. April 2019. Thailand (ประเทศไทย). Bangkok (บางกอก). Chatuchak Weekend Market. I'd heard rumors there was an impromptu cockpit in the back, and so there was. Cockfighting is legal in Thailand, and is not a fight to the death, as it is in, say, the Philippines. In Thailand, the spurs are taped up to minimize injury to these valuable birds. Depending on the ring, a cock loses when he submits three times or otherwise cowers to the victor. Some trivia: in the United States, legal cockfights generate around $100,000,000 annually. Starting December 2019, this will be illegal, per a bill signed by President Trump in 2018.

The ancient bloodsport of cock fighting is illegal in the United States. But in many other parts of the world, it’s still enormously popular. The birds are specially bred on farms and then trained and groomed for brutal fights that more often than not result in death for at least one of the roosters. The fights are made more violent by the razor-sharp metal spurs that are attached to the roosters’s legs. Vocativ went to a cock fight in Bogota, Colombia, and met some of the men who are dedicated to their fighting roosters.

In the Philippines, the 6,000 year-old sport of cockfighting has been transformed into a fully-legal, billion dollar industry. Known locally as sabong, it takes place in 2,500 dedicated stadiums across the country and kills an estimated 30 million roosters each year.
A few months back, VICE Australia hit the cockpits and hatcheries of Manila. There we met the breeders, trainers, and philosophers who help make sabong the Philippines's national obsession.

Cockfight
A cockfight is a blood sport between two roosters (cocks), or more accurately gamecocks, held in a ring called a cockpit. The history of raising fowl for fighting goes back 6,000 years. The first documented use of the word gamecock, denoting use of the cock as to a “game”, a sport, pastime or entertainment, was recorded in 1646, after the term “cock of the game” used by George Wilson, in the earliest known book on the sport of cockfighting in The Commendation of Cocks and Cock Fighting in 1607. But it was during Magellan's voyage of discovery of the Philippines in 1521 when modern cockfighting was first witnessed and documented by Antonio Pigafetta, Magellan's chronicler, in the kingdom of Taytay.
The combatants, referred to as gamecocks, are specially bred birds, conditioned for increased stamina and strength. The comb and wattle are cut off in order to meet show standards of the American Gamefowl Society and the Old English Game Club and to prevent freezing in colder climates (the standard emerged from the older practice of severing the comb, wattles, and earlobes of the bird in order to remove anatomical vulnerabilities, similar to the practice of docking a dog's tail and ears).

Bulldog chased me to the top of the slide
