Kodaline (/ˈkoʊdəlaɪn/) are an Irish rock band. Originally known as 21 Demands, in 2012 the band changed its name to Kodaline.

Steve Garrigan and Mark Prendergast grew up in Swords, Dublin, and have known each other since childhood. They both attended secondary school at Colaiste Choilm in Swords, where they would take part in many battles of the bands. They began to share a love for music and at that stage Vinny May, who also lived in Swords, joined the group. The group was not fully complete until January 2012, when their friend, bass player Jason Boland, from Celbridge, County Kildare, was recruited.

Career

2005–11: 21 Demands

As 21 Demands, the band first came to attention in November 2007, when they participated in the fifth series of RTÉ talent show You're a Star; finishing as the series' runners-up. On 3 March 2007, 21 Demands released their own single called "Give Me a Minute" through digital7 downloads on the RTÉ website. They made chart history when the single topped the Irish Singles Chart, becoming the first independently released track to achieve this feat. The song "One of those days" is another song 21 demands wrote. This song was played on the Balcony TV YouTube channel. Ireland was the birthplace for the balcony TV Youtube channel.

Coming Up for Air

Coming Up for Air is a novel by George Orwell, first published in June 1939, shortly before the outbreak of World War II. It combines premonitions of the impending war with images of an idyllic Thames-side Edwardian era childhood. The novel is pessimistic, with its view that speculative builders, commercialism and capitalism are killing the best of rural England, "everything cemented over", and there are great new external threats.

Background

As a child, Orwell lived at Shiplake and Henley in the Thames Valley. His father, Richard Walmesley Blair, was a civil servant in British India, and he lived a genteel life with his mother and two sisters, though spending much of the year at boarding school at Eastbourne and later at Eton in Britain. He particularly enjoyed fishing and shooting rabbits with a neighbouring family.

In 1937 Orwell spent some months fighting in the Spanish Civil War. He was wounded in the throat in May 1937, by a Fascist sniper at Huesca.

Entertainment UK

Entertainment UK Limited (EUK) was a retail supply and distribution company and a wholly owned subsidiary of Woolworths Group. The company, along with Woolworths plc, entered administration with Deloitte on 28 November 2008. EUK claimed to have had a turnover in excess of £1.4 billion per annum, and over 160,000 lines of products.

History

Entertainment UK was founded, originally as Record Merchandisers Limited in 1966 by EMI Records, to distribute music to non-specialist retailers, and subsequently became a joint venture between a number of record companies. Woolworths became Entertainment UK's largest customer and in 1986 Record Merchandisers Limited was acquired by Kingfisher plc. In 1988, Record Merchandisers Limited changed its name to Entertainment UK (EUK).

EUK became the property of Woolworths Group after the demerger from parent company Kingfisher in 2001. In 2006, Woolworths Group acquired Total Home Entertainment Distribution Limited (THE) to form part of EUK division. In November 2007 EUK acquired Bertram Books, a major book wholesaler and distributor.
