Musical composition can refer to an original piece of music, the structure of a musical piece, or the process of creating a new piece of music. People who practice composition are called composers.
Although today composition is considered to consist of the manipulation of each aspect of music (harmony, melody, form, rhythm, and timbre), according to Jean-Benjamin de Laborde (1780, 2:12):
A piece of music exists in the form of a composition in musical notation or as a single acoustic event (a live performance or recorded track). If composed before being performed, music can be performed from memory, through written musical notation, or through a combination of both. Compositions comprise musical elements, which vary widely from person to person and between cultures. Improvisation is the act of composing musical elements spontaneously during the performance.
Piece is a "general, non-technical term [that began to be] applied mainly to instrumental compositions from the 17th century onwards....other than when they are taken individually 'piece' and its equivalents are rarely used of movements in sonatas or symphonies....composers have used all these terms [in their different languages] frequently in compound forms [e.g. Klavierstück]....In vocal music...the term is most frequently used for operatic ensembles..."
Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound and silence. The common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound). Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and with vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping, and there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal pieces and pieces that combine singing and instruments. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike; "art of the Muses"). In its most general form, the activities describing music as an art form include the production of works of music (songs, tunes, symphonies, and so on), the criticism of music, the study of the history of music, and the aesthetic examination of music. Ancient Greek and Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Common sayings such as "the harmony of the spheres" and "it is music to my ears" point to the notion that music is often ordered and pleasant to listen to. However, 20th-century composer John Cage thought that any sound can be music, saying, for example, "There is no noise, only sound."
Composition or Compositions may refer to:
Set theory is the branch of mathematical logic that studies sets, which informally are collections of objects. Although any type of object can be collected into a set, set theory is applied most often to objects that are relevant to mathematics. The language of set theory can be used in the definitions of nearly all mathematical objects.
The modern study of set theory was initiated by Georg Cantor and Richard Dedekind in the 1870s. After the discovery of paradoxes in naive set theory, numerous axiom systems were proposed in the early twentieth century, of which the Zermelo–Fraenkel axioms, with the axiom of choice, are the best-known.
Set theory is commonly employed as a foundational system for mathematics, particularly in the form of Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory with the axiom of choice. Beyond its foundational role, set theory is a branch of mathematics in its own right, with an active research community. Contemporary research into set theory includes a diverse collection of topics, ranging from the structure of the real number line to the study of the consistency of large cardinals.
Music theory is the study of the practices and possibilities of music. It generally derives from observation of, and involves hypothetical speculation about how musicians and composers make music. The term also describes the academic study and analysis of fundamental elements of music such as pitch, rhythm, harmony, and form, and refers to descriptions, concepts, or beliefs related to music. Because of the ever-expanding conception of what constitutes music (see Definition of music), a more inclusive definition could be that music theory is the consideration of any sonic phenomena, including silence, as it relates to music.
The present article is about music theory properly speaking, i.e. about theories, speculations and hypotheses made about the various aspects or music. It describes the elements of music only insofar as they give way to such theories; other informations about these elements will be found in other articles such as Aspect of music and the specific parameters of music described there. Textbooks, especially in the United States of America, often also include under the term "theory" elements of musical acoustics, considerations of musical notation, techniques of (often tonal) composition (Harmony and Counterpoint), etc., which will not be dealt with as such here, but only as they were the subject of theories and hypotheses.

In this video I tell you what you need to know to write a basic and effective melody using 4 basic guidelines and knowledge of a scale, key, and tonic. This is part of my Music Theory series. Today's thumbnail feature Carl Phillip Emanuel (CPE) Bach, a famed composer of the Galant and Classical styles known for his beautiful and elegant melodies. He was also the son of Johann Sebastian (JS) Bach, a master of the high baroque style. History shows an odd reversal with this son-father pair, as JS Bach was not particularly well known or highly regarded in his lifetime, but his son enjoyed great success. In modern times, the roles have reversed and it JS that is well known and deeply studied while CPE is frequently overlooked. NEW! Writers of the Dawn Podcast https://soundcloud.com/writersof...

The episode is part one of a new series called "How To Harmonize a Melody" where I will demonstrate Tonal, Linear, Bitonal, Modal and Polytonal techniques. There are rules of counterpoint that were established during the common practice period from 1600-1900 that you can apply Roman Numeral analysis to but only if you want to copy the styles of the masters of those eras. These rules were broken 100 years ago by people like Schoenberg, Berg and Webern. If you want to chart a new course, you must find new rules! I will save common practice videos for the right time but that's not now. I this episode I harmonize a simple 5 note melody G-Bb-Eb-G-F with Linear, Tonal, Bitonal and Polytonal examples. Yikes! Its my very first composition. Did some digging through old undergrad papers and found this. I wrote this for my sophomore year Music Theory II class in I believe Fall 2006. The assignment was to write something at least 32 bars that modulates to a closely related key. I actually wasn't a music composition major at the time I wrote this, I was doing music education. I switched to music composition by Spring 2009. So this actually isn't the piece that really inspired me to study composition seriously.

Kevin Austin met with music students to look at a number of issues related to electroacoustic composition in the studio, notably working with and understanding sound and sound transformations and control of monitoring levels. Informed by such fields of study as acoustics, psychoacoustics and physiology, composers working in the electroacoustic studio will be able to attain a higher quality in sound output as well as a heightened level of precision in communicating their sonic, artistic and musical ideas. These principles are relevant not only to the acousmatic composer, but also to anyone working in related fields, such as broadcast journalism, video game music creation and more. This episode goes over the core limitations of the NES, with demonstrations of the unique sounds that all NES composers worked with, along with some commentary on why certain sounds were used for certain things. it also goes over a few of the reasons why I used Modplug to create my chiptunes. to look further and
to get lost in yourself
the light that revives
and that gathers the reflections
high azure plain open up
higher my thoughts range over
and I notice that everything
around me is music
music is
the regular dance
of all your breaths on me
the party of your eyes
you almost smile at me
you and the sound of your lips
you, always more
the harmony attained together
I'll listen to you because
you are music for me
I still hear the voices of
the street where I was born
my mother who called me
so many times but the scream
of liberty was louder
and under the sun that
lights the courtyards
I see the children's dusty runs
that by playing don't make it stop
I still hear singing in dialect
the lullabies of rain on the roof
for me this everything
this sweet appreciation
is music to remember
it's inside me...
it's part of me...
it runs with me...
it's music
music is
your friend who talks to you
when you feel lonely
you can always find a hand
it's music...
to conserve
to save together with you
listen
the more we are, the more a choir
in universal language advances
it says they also made a hole
in the skin of the sky
you can hear it
it's the howl of the stars
mentality might change
in people's heads
that listen but don't hear
before the silence
falls down on everything
the big silence
after exploded air
because one cannot imagine
a world without music
because every single heart,
even the smallest one,
is a beating of life
and love that is
