Saint-Malo (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃.ma.lo]; Gallo : Saent-Malô; Breton: Sant-Maloù) is a walled port city in Brittany in northwestern France on the English Channel. It is a sub-prefecture of the Ille-et-Vilaine.
Traditionally with an independent streak, Saint-Malo was in the past notorious for privateering (the "cité corsaire"). Today the city is a major tourist destination, with many ancient, attractive buildings.
The population can increase to up to 200,000 in the summer tourist season. With the suburbs included, the population is approximately 153,000 (2011).
The population of the commune more than doubled in 1968 with the merging of three communes: Saint-Malo, Saint-Servan (population 14,963 in 1962) and Paramé (population 8811 in 1962).
Inhabitants of Saint-Malo are called Malouins in French.
Saint-Malo during the Middle Ages was a fortified island at the mouth of the Rance River, controlling not only the estuary but the open sea beyond. The promontory fort of Aleth, south of the modern centre in what is now the Saint-Servan district, commanded approaches to the Rance even before the Romans, but modern Saint-Malo traces its origins to a monastic settlement founded by Saint Aaron and Saint Brendan early in the sixth century. Its name is derived from a man said to have been a follower of Brendan, Saint Malo or Maclou.

Malo was an American Latin-tinged rock and roll group. The San Francisco-based ensemble was led by Arcelio Garcia and Jorge Santana, the brother of Latin-rock guitarist, Carlos Santana.
Five of Malo's original members (Santana, Leo, Garcia, Tellez, and Bean) had previously played in the band, The Malibus. The other three founding members (Abel Zarate, Roy Murray, and Richard Spremich) had played together in the group, Naked Lunch.
Malo's 1972 Top 20 hit single, "Suavecito," was written by timbales player Richard Bean, who initially wrote it as a poem for a girl in his high school algebra class. The song has been called "The Chicano National Anthem" and was arranged for Malo by Richard Bean, bassist Pablo Tellez, and Abel Zarate. Tellez and Zarate also received co-author credits on "Suavecito". Guitarist Abel Zarate gave Malo a distinctive two-guitar sound with intricate harmony and dual solos the norm. The band featured full horn and percussion sections in the style of contemporary bands Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago. Some of the best musicians in the Bay Area were featured in Malo, including Forrest Buchtel, Jr., Ron Smith, Luis Gasca, and Tom Poole in the trumpet section. Malo's music was also hugely popular in Central and South America, especially the songs "Chevere", "Nena", "Pana", "Cafe", and "Oye Mama".
A saint is a person who is recognized as having an exceptional degree of holiness, or likeness to God. While the English term "saint" originated in Christianity, historians of religion now use the appellation "in a more general way to refer to the state of special holiness that many religions attribute to certain people," with the Jewish Tzadik, the Islamic Mu'min, the Hindu rishi or Sikh guru, and the Buddhist arhat or bodhisattva also being referred to as "saints". Depending on the religion, saints are recognized either by official ecclesiastical declaration/denomination or by popular acclamation (see folk saints).
In Christianity, "saint" has a wide variety of meanings, depending on the context and denomination. The original Christian denotation was any believer who is "in Christ" and in whom Christ dwells, whether in Heaven or on earth. In Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic doctrine, all of their faithful deceased in Heaven are considered to be saints, but some are considered worthy of greater honor, emulation, or veneration, with official ecclesiastical recognition given to some saints by canonization or glorification.
A storm surge is a coastal flood or tsunami-like phenomenon of rising water commonly associated with low pressure weather systems (such as tropical cyclones and strong extratropical cyclones), the severity of which is affected by the shallowness and orientation of the water body relative to storm path, and the timing of tides. Most casualties during tropical cyclones occur as the result of storm surges.
The two main meteorological factors contributing to a storm surge are a long fetch of winds spiraling inward toward the storm, and a low-pressure-induced dome of water drawn up under and trailing the storm's center. The second effect is responsible for destructive meteotsunamis associated with the most intense tropical systems.
The deadliest storm surge on record was the 1970 Bhola cyclone, which killed up to 500,000 people in the area of the Bay of Bengal. The low-lying coast of the Bay of Bengal is particularly vulnerable to surges caused by tropical cyclones. The deadliest storm surge in the twenty-first century was caused by the Cyclone Nargis, which killed more than 138,000 people in Myanmar in May 2008. The next deadliest in this century was caused by the Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), which killed more than 20,000 people in the central Philippines in 2013 and resulted in economic losses estimated at $14 billion (USD).

The ancient walled city of St-Malo is extremely popular with visitors from all over Europe and in particular the UK. The promontory fort of Alet, south of the modern centre in what's now the St-Servan district, commanded approaches to the Rance even before the Romans, but modern St-Malo traces its origins to a monastic settlement founded by saints Aaron and Brendan early in the sixth century. In later centuries it became notorious as the home of a fierce breed of pirate-mariners, who were never quite under anybody's control but their own; for four years from 1590, St-Malo even declared itself to be an independent republic. Saint Malo lies at the Emerald Coast at the Channel in the north of Brittany at the mouth of the river Rance. The river is divided by the largest tidal power plant in Europe, with a capacity of 240 MW. By 2011 it was the largest in the world. On the opposite riverbank is seaside resort of Dinard. Travel video about destination Breagne in France. Brittany, the rugged west of France with picturesque old towns, castles and fortresses and the surf of the Atlantic that constantly laps against its rocky coastline. Its ancient name of Armorika meaning “The land of the sea ” underlines the historical significance of the ocean for those who live in this part of the world.English troops besieged Vitré for many years until the lords of the castle finally paid a high ransom for their freedom. The besieging army thus withdrew. The well fortified town subsequently enjoyed much prosperity and has remained in tact right up until the present day. Travel video about destination Bretagne in France. Brittany in the rugged west of France features picturesque old towns, castles and fortresses plus austere mediaeval cathedrals. Nostalgia and romantic harbour villages still exist here and it is also a land of menhirs and fishermen.Rennes is the capital of the region and it is here that our journey through Brittany begins. It is a small town in which both mediaeval and classical buildings stand side by side. In 1720 a disastrous fire that raged for seven days destroyed a number of historic houses. Several crooked, partly renovated frame-work houses are situated in the alleys of the old town, their carved windows and oriels create a medieval atmosphere. Thirty two kilometres south is Vitré, a picture postcard town with a city wall, narrow l...

Hear a guide explain about fortifications in St. Malo, France
Everyone who visits Normandy or Brittany stops at Mont Saint- Michel - - and with good reason! This abbey / fortress on a bleak island is one of the remarkable sights of Europe. The town is intense with tourism, but the abbey itself is quiet, removed, and inspiring. Vast tidal planes surround the island, adding to the mystique. With an hour or two left-over in the day we also stopped at Saint-Malo. Although reputed to be "too busy" with Parisian and other local visitors we found the town delightful. We visited on an off-season weekend and it was still bustling with people - mostly French, on a day off. Children dripped their ice cream, sun-lovers sat on the beach - - all surrounded by antique city walls and fortresses. This town was built from officially sanctioned "pirate" money - ...

Oh, Amelia
My southern woman
Never had a chance to say goodbye
I met her back in sixty-three, she was such a mystery
She was there on Barron Street, down in New Orleans
So wild but yet so tame, she could calm a hurricane
She was only seventeen and Amelia was her name
Oh, when I took her for a ride, she got close by my side
And when I looked into her eye, Amelia kept me hypnotized
But in my heart she fell, oh, I got pulled into her spell
I can still see her there with the flowers in her hair
Oh Amelia, my Southern woman
I can still feel you every time I close my eyes
Sweet Amelia, where did you run to?
We never had a chance to say goodbye
I remember making love underneath the stars above
I can feel the summer breeze up in magnolia trees
That night in the Southern land, the girl, she took me by the hand
And I was weak as a little lamb but I became a man
Love was pumping through my veins, her lips were sweet like sugarcane
We rode all night in the rain 'cross the Lake Poncetrain
She had a heart as fine as fire, burning innocent desire
I can still see her there with flowers in her hair
Oh, Amelia, my Southern woman
I can still feel you, every time I close my eyes
Sweet Amelia, where did you run to?
We never had a chance to say goodbye
Just like a shooting star, she vanished in the night
But I'll always remember her lips so warm and tender
In my heart she'll always shine so bright
Sweet Amelia, if I could just see her one more time
Oh Amelia, my Southern woman
I can still feel you every time I close my eyes
Sweet Amelia, where did you run to?
We never had a chance to say goodbye
Oh Amelia, my Southern woman
I can still feel you every time I close my eyes
Sweet Amelia, where did you run to?
We never had a chance to say goodbye
Oh Amelia, my Southern woman
I can still feel you every time I close my eyes
Sweet Amelia, where did you run to?
