The Good Time SIngers
Pick up a recent issue of Ugly Things, as I did, and read about the sad and strange life of former Monkees songwriter and Penny Arkade member Craig Smith. The near-book-length article inspired me to track down this record, which is, as it turns out, a little too Up With People cornball for my own tastes. But I thought that since I went to the trouble of ripping it, I'd share it with you nonetheless. Besides, it's on classic-period Capitol and David Gates wrote a few tunes. (I stuck a few stray tracks that I found around the internet on the end.) Update: songs are now broken into individual tracks.

If this record sounds a little like late-period Burritos, that's because it is. The band - Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Gib Guilbeau, Thad Maxwell, Mickey McGee, and Bobby Cochran - signed to Mercury, changed their name, and, with the help of Felix Peppalardi, they produced an album that leans more toward rock (think the Eagles) and less on country.

Fast Folk
This record from 1989 - featuring the likes of Peter Case, Victoria Williams, Milo Binder, and Marvin Etzioni - holds a special place in my heart because, well, I took the shot. Unfortunately, the person who designed the cover decided that tinting it with garish colors and breaking it up into multiple images was the way to go. From Timmy: "I came across one of the most detestable albums I have ever had to listen to. Horrific, blase, bland, halfhearted renditions of top-40 hits from 1973. All lamely done by a lousy band called the Sound Effects. Apparently, they recorded many albums, each focusing on different years, as advertised on the rear cover of this monstrosity, titled: 'Autumn '73.' " Thanks Timmy!
