Yemen (i/ˈjɛmən/; Arabic: اليَمَن al-Yaman), officially known as the Republic of Yemen (الجمهورية اليمنية al-Jumhūrīyah al-Yamanīyah), is an Arab country in Western Asia, occupying the southwestern to the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen is the second largest country in the peninsula, occupying 527,970 km2 (203,850 sq mi). The coastline stretches for about 2,000 km (1,200 mi). It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the east. Although Yemen's constitutionally stated capital is the city of Sana'a, the city has been under rebel control since February 2015. Because of this, Yemen's capital has been temporarily relocated to the port city of Aden, on the southern coast. Yemen's territory includes more than 200 islands; the largest of these is Socotra.
Yemen was the home of the Sabaeans (biblical Sheba), a trading state that flourished for over a thousand years and probably also included parts of modern-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. In 275 AD, the region came under the rule of the later Jewish influenced Himyarite Kingdom. Christianity arrived in the 4th century AD whereas Judaism and local paganism were already established. Islam spread quickly in the 7th century and Yemenite troops were crucial in the expansion of the early Islamic conquests. Administration of Yemen has long been notoriously difficult. Several dynasties emerged from the 9th to 16th century, the Rasulid being the strongest and most prosperous. The country was divided between the Ottoman and British empires in the early 20th century. The Zaydi Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was established after World War I in North Yemen before the creation of Yemen Arab Republic in 1962. South Yemen remained a British protectorate until 1967. The two Yemeni states united to form the modern republic of Yemen in 1990.

Thousands of people have been killed and millions have been displaced after Saudi Arabia launched a military offensive in 2015. Saudi Arabia considers Houthi rebels, who control vast swathes of the country, an Iranian ally and a direct threat to their security. Three years into the war, the country has been devastated and civilians are bearing the brunt of the war. About 17 million Yemenis will face famine if humanitarian aid does not reach them soon. A massive explosion from an airstrike in Yemen’s capital left at least fifteen people dead and wounded dozens more on Monday, medical sources told Reuters. The attack was the latest -- and strongest -- in a series of air strikes led by Saudi Arabia in the Sana’a area. Saudi fighter planes bombed an area of Faj Attan mountain and targeted a military base that was housing scud missiles. The mountain sits near the Hadda district, which is home to embassies and the presidential palace. The explosion at the missile base shattered windows and tore holes in buildings and cars. According to Reuters, at least 15 people died in the blast. Al Jazeera reported more than 300 people were wounded. One witness at a local hospital told Reuters victims with debris wounds crowded the emergency room. ...

Besides the Houthi movement in the north, the Southern Movement in Yemen is a popular movement that has been active since 2007. It wants independence for the south. North and South Yemen unified in 1990 after the southern government collapsed. However, four years later, the south tried to break away and this led to a civil war. The Youth Economic Empowerment Project uses the 3x6 Approach to contribute to peace-building and the economic recovery process by mitigating rampant unemployment among youth in Yemen. The approach has three main phases—inclusiveness, ownership and sustainability. During phase I, the period of temporary employment, individuals are encouraged to develop a business idea that they will implement individually or in association with others in Phase II. In Phase II, once the business plan is found to be solid, the project will triple the savings of the individual or group to provide start-up capital for implementation of the business concept. Phase III is a period of consolidation of the business and the project ensures that the young entrepreneurs have access to information about the business en...

The 2015 power shift in Yemen has implications at national, regional and global levels, explains Nikolai Starikov, writer on geo-politics and supra-national finance. Locally, there is a struggle between Yemeni groups, in particular Sunnis and Shia. The major regional players, Saudi Arabia and Iran, are visibly backing opposite sides. On a global level the battle between on one side the US and affiliated nations and on the other side Russia and China continues as fiercely as ever, with a new front having opened up in Yemen. According to Starikov, lowering the oil price to continue economically strangling Russia remains Washington's priority – even if it means postponing other objectives. This explains why Washington has begun making massive concessions to Iran after decades of cast-iron ...

Abdullah Al-Dailami, Managing Director of Yemen's Social Fund for Development, says learning from best practices can enhance the sustainability of economic interventions by the government. These influences are seen primarily by their impact on small businesses, for instance avoiding subsidies and setting up loan programs that have a high likelihood for success. The government has also focused on preparing the business environment, by mobilizing different aspects of the economic sectors to then conduct direct interventions on their own.

Yemeni People The culture of Yemen has an ancient history, influenced by Islam. Due to its unique geographic location, Yemen has acquired a very distinctive culture from its neighbors; historically and culturally, the people of Yemen have closer ties with the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Ethiopia) than they do with the rest of Arabia and the Middle East.Religion in Yemen primarily consists of two principal religious groups of Islam; Sunni and Shi'a. About 65% of the Muslim population is Sunni, and 30% is Shi'a. Sunnis are primarily Shafi'i, but also include significant groups of Malikis and Hanbalis. Shi'as are primarily Zaidis, though they also have significant minorities of Twelver Shi'as and Musta'ali Western Isma'ili Shi'as (see: Shi'a Islam in Yemen).[1] The Sunnis ...

Peter Maurer, the charity’s president, said the overall situation in Yemen was “very dire, and very catastrophic” in terms of health. The two-year war has resulted in the world's worst-ever cholera epidemic, and hospitals are unable to keep up. According to the UN, nearly two million Yemeni children are acutely malnourished. Yemen's Ministry of Public Health and Population on Sunday night declared a public health emergency in the capital Sanaa as a result of the spreading cholera epidemic, which has killed 115 people so far since April 27. The ministry also sent an urgent call to all international and local health organizations to help address the worsening situation, in which the ministry said that the situation "is threatening with an unprecedented health and humanitarian disaster." At a press conference in Sanaa, the International Committee of the Red Cross Operations Director said more than 8,500 suspected cholera cases have been reported in 14 governorates of Yemen from April 27 to May 13. The cholera outbreak in Yemen was first announced by Yemen's Ministry of Public Health and Population on O...

Regularly targeted since the outbreak of the conflict two and a half years ago, medical facilities in Yemen are struggling to deliver even the most basic care. Aden, in the south of the country, is relatively calm but even here access to healthcare remains problematic.
In areas where MSF teams are working, health structures have been hit and damaged or destroyed by air strikes. As Natalie, MSF emergency coordinator, explains, these attacks severely limit the capacity of Yemeni healthcare system to respond to the medical needs.
Staff at Al Kuwait University Hospital in Sana'a are among the tens of thousands of public health employees in Yemen who face the daily risks and challenges of working a country devastated by conflict—and who have been struggling to survive on little to no pay over the past year. Many health workers cannot afford to keep going, and many health facilities have had to shut down. Those medical staff who continue to work without pay are helping their communities out of a sense of duty, and holding out hope for change. With one of the world's highest maternal mortality rates, Yemen faces extreme hurdles when it comes to providing adequate healthcare to its women. Seven Yemeni women a day die of complications from pregnancy or childbirth -- leaving seven families in danger of collapse in the absence of a mother -- and nearly all of the deaths are preventable.

The United Nations health agency says nearly 2000 people have died of cholera outbreak in the war-torn Yemen. World Health Organization noted in its statement released on Saturday that the epidemic was increasing at an average of 5-thousand new cases a day. The statement added that nearly 420-thousand suspected cases of cholera have been reported since late April. Earlier, WHO, the UN Children’s Fund and the World Food Program said malnourishment of 80 percent of Yemeni children was making them vulnerable to the cholera epidemic. The Republic Of Yemen: there is almost no other country on Earth that possesses as many secrets and ancient legends as the Arabia Felix and the Bab Al Yemen, the gateway to the Yemen, is the entrance to the historic district of Sanaa, the Yemen’s capital city that it is believed to date back to the third century A.D. Women are rarely to be seen in Yemen’s marketplaces and, when they are, they are hidden from male glances by a protective veil. Islam still plays an important role in the daily cultural life of the people, including the traditional market places that are almost exclusively a male domain. Presently it is a part of the Republic of Yemen and due to its harsh weather conditions every element on the island is distinctive in itself. It is believed that the name of the island originated from Sanskrit which means “blissful island.” It is often regarded as the “lost world” and houses some of the most unique flora and fauna found on this planet. It is believed that the group of islands got separated from the African Mainland about 6 or 7 million years ago. In the two years since the Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen's civil war, fighting has often spilled over the country's borders. Until now, that meant shelling of Saudi cities and villages close to the frontier. But the Houthi rebels who control the capital Sanaa, and much of the north of the country, have long threatened to take the war directly to Saudi Arabia. The group says it is now able to target major cities in Saudi Arabia and claims to have successfully hit a Saudi oil facility in the Red Sea port of Yanbu last week. US officials have confirmed the missile strike but the Saudi government denied it. The development is significant because Yanbu is more than 900km from the northern Yemeni province of Saada, from which the missile was launched. If Yanbu is within range of Ho...

More than 10,000 people have been killed in the fighting and the United Nations says millions of people face shortages of food and clean water. Diseases are another factor, especially cholera. What can be done to bring an end to the war in Yemen? And is the international community ignoring what is happening on the ground? “Finally” seems to be the key word in how HRW feels about the UN calling out the Saudi-led coalition for attacks that have killed 100s of Yemeni children. Last year’s removal of Saudi Arabia from the shame-list under threat of rescinding UN funding has left a bad impression. Will the UN naming & shaming stick this time around? And most importantly, will it better things for Yemeni children? Join me, Waqar Rizvi, we discuss the UN’s blacklisting of the Saudi-led coalition & other parties to the Yemen conflict for child rights’ violations. It has taken weeks of intense negotiations but now the UN has agreed to set up an investigation into alleged human rights violations in Yemen. Some European countries and Canada had wanted a commission of inquiry. But a compromise with a group of Arab states including Saudi Arabia was reached. Yemeni government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, have been fighting Houthi fighters since 2015. How much has politics played in this UN decision? And who will hold those found guilty of war crimes to account? A new confidential UN report says after nearly two-and-a-half years of military campaign in Yemen, the Saudi-led coalition is 'no closer' to achieving its objective. The report suggests the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen is failing. Saudi Arabia and its partners have been carrying out air strikes against the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, in one of the world's poorest countries. But despite the coalition's considerable military power, it has not succeeded in its mission. The report says the campaign has led to a further fragmentation of Yemen's political landscape. It accuses all parties of continuing to violate international human rights laws, saying government forces, Houthi rebels, fighters loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh and the UAE are detaining people illegally. ...
Silk Road IV: Central and West Asia (2007) Episode 2 of 5 - The Progeny of the Queen of Sheba -- Yemen and Saudi Arabia With the end of the civil fight, the people of Yemen are now building a new country. The remains of the palace of the Queen of Sheba, or Bilqs, are being excavated as a way of regaining Yemeni ethnic pride. North of Yemen lies the current oil kingdom, Saudi Arabia. Until 50 years ago, half of the Saudi people led nomadic lives. With the sharp rises in oil prices, people in Saudi Arabia gained enormous wealth, and as a result, the historical character of their cities began to change its shape. The tale of rise and fall transcending time and space echoes through the 1,500-kilometer journey across the Arabian Peninsula. Launched in 1980, NHK's renowned Silk Road series ...

The Saudi-led coalition and Houthis who are at war with each other are both placed on a draft UN blacklist. The Saudi-led coalition has again been placed on a draft United Nations blacklist. The coalition is accused of killing and maiming 683 children in Yemen last year, as well as accusations of attacking schools and hospitals. But the annual draft report also notes that the Saudi-led coalition has put measures in place to protect children. The report also blacklists the Houthis, government forces and their militia allies. The United Nations doesn't punish nations on the list but the hope is the 'naming and shaming' forces them do more to protect civilians. The Saudi-led coalition was on the blacklist last year, but was removed after Saudi pressure on the UN Secretary-General. Pre...
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bidani-TV/262583863791557
