Portugal. The 5 and half thousand square meters large southern part of the once proud colonial empire is Algarve, bathing all year in the sun. From the hilltops, moor forts look down on to the surroundings. In the old towns narrow roads lead up to the magnificent Manuel-style temples. The buildings are ornamented by Azulejos, moor painted tiles. The monuments and statues summon adventurers and explorers: Magellan and Vasco De Gama. The country is full of fishing villages, palm trees, vine arbours, olive tree orchards, and orange gardens. The Playa de Rocha and the other sandy beaches are surrounded by large cliffs, stone archs and lagoons. On the hill of Moniche we travel among pine trees and para oaks. From the lighthouse of the Saint Vincent cape we can only see the endless Atlantic Ocean, which the medieval man thought to be the end of the world.

The Algarve from Arabic: الغرب, trans. Al-Gharb, meaning "The West") is the southernmost region of mainland Portugal. It has an area of 4,997 square kilometres with 451,006 permanent inhabitants, and incorporates 16 municipalities. The region has as its administrative centre the city of Faro, where both the region's international airport (FAO) and public university (the University of the Algarve) are located. Tourism and related activities are extensive and make up the bulk of the Algarve's summer economy. If you’re thinking of visiting Portugal, look no further than Albufeira, situated in the Algarve.
A popular tourist spot is the old town. Here you can take to the shops and markets, wine and dine in its many bars and restaurants. In the evening, watch the old town come to life as street performers entertain the crowds.
If you come at the right time you’ll probably catch a local event or two such as the Fisherman’s Festival, where you can enjoy local food and entertainment.
Or, if you’re looking for a more lively night out there’s the New Town, otherwise known as the strip. Situated a short distance away, the strip has a wide range of bars and clubs and is a great destination for partygoers.
There are tonnes of activities you can do in Albufeira. Thanks to its location on the Algarve coast there are numerous beaches where you can relax, and even have a barbeque on!
If relaxing isn’t your thing then you can take part in many water activities, such as parasailing, jet skiing and many more.
Or, how about taking a boat trip amongst the beautiful coast to view the spectacular caves and rock formations on offer. Did you know that this is where the Beatles got their inspiration for their ‘Yellow Submarine?’
You can even take a jeep tour and explore the non-touristic areas of the Algarve, taking in its beautiful surroundings and finding out more about the area.
You can learn about its famous cork trees and discover smaller traditional towns that you probably wouldn’t know you could visit.

Die Felsenküste der Algarve: Das sind steil abfallende Kliffs vor blaugrünem Meer. Während die Touristen in den Süden strömen, sind die Steilküsten der Westalgarve noch sehr ursprünglich. Das Meer vor Vale do Bispo ist ein bevorzugtes Surfrevier, aber auch ein gefährlicher „Arbeitsplatz“. Hier werden die köstlichen Percebes gepflückt, die seltenen Entenmuscheln, die eigentlich Krebse sind. Nicht weit vom Leuchtturm am Cabo de Sao Vicente gibt es Bratwurst. Seit 1996 verkauft Wolfgang Bald mit seinem Team Nürnberger und Thüringer Würste vor allem an deutsche Touristen – ein lohnendes Geschäft. Die Portugiesen haben eine Vorliebe für Süßes, Mandeln, Feigen, Johannisbrot, Marzipan, und wir schauen einigen Kalorienzauberern über die Schulter. Zwischen Lagos und Faro, an der südlichen Algarve, findet man Yachthäfen, Golfplätze, Bettenburgen und Partymeilen. Im Hinterland bestimmt jedoch die Landwirtschaft das Leben. Manuel João Fortes ist Korkschäler, seit 40 Jahren. Er braucht nur eine halbe Stunde für einen ganzen Baum. Das Naturprodukt verschließt nicht nur Weinflaschen, es wird auch als Dämmstoff und Bodenbelag genutzt oder für modische Accessoires. Das Naturschutzgebiet Ria Formosa gilt als Brutstätte und Zufluchtsort unzähliger Vogelarten. Hier wird aber auch traditionell Meersalz gewonnen. Der Trend zur bewussten Ernährung brachte neuen Aufschwung für die Salzgärten. Flor do Sal wird in viele Länder exportiert. Carla und Sonia Peralta sind Hundenärrinnen. Vor allem der portugiesische Wasserhund hat es ihnen angetan. Seit einer dieser gar nicht mehr sehr schwimmfreudigen Hunde „First dog“ in den USA ist, blüht das Geschäft mit der Aufzucht. Früher halfen die Hunde den Fischern bei der Arbeit. Carla und Sonia bemühen sich, dass die Vorzüge dieser Rasse nicht verloren gehen. Die Reise endet in Tavira. Dort werden Tintenfische mit Tonkrügen gefangen. Der Krug wird mit einem Seil ins Wasser gelassen. Die Wärme des Tons zieht die Tintenfische an, sie schwimmen hinein und können mühelos samt Krug aus dem Wasser gezogen werden: eine geradezu beschauliche Art des Fischfangs. (2012)

The western Algarve is also known as “Rocky Algarve” due to the impressive limestone rocks dominating the coastline. Small romantic bays, hidden creeks and caves formed by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, accessible only by boat, are surrounded by rugged rock formations. This scenario is interrupted by several large bays with sandy beaches.
According to World Travel Awards, Algarve is the Europe's Leading Golf Destination 2013 and 2014. There are over 25 top-class courses in the Algarve, most of which were designed by legendary names such as Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus and Christy O'Connor Jnr.
The Algarve is famous for its pottery and ceramics, particularly hand-painted pottery and azulejos, which are painted, tin-glazed ceramic tiles. There are numerous ceramics and pottery outlets throughout the Algarve. For working potteries and ceramics workshops the main, or best-known, pottery centers are located in the towns of Almancil, Porches and Loulé, but there are many other potteries and workshops in the Algarve region.

Portugal (Portuguese: [puɾtuˈɣaɫ]), officially the Portuguese Republic (Portuguese: República Portuguesa), is a country on the Iberian Peninsula, in southwestern Europe. These Muslim peoples were eventually expelled during the Christian Reconquista of the peninsula. By 1139, Portugal had established itself as a kingdom independent from León. In the 15th and 16th centuries, as the result of pioneering the Age of Discovery, Portugal expanded Western influence and established the first global empire, becoming one of the world's major economic, political and military powers.

Die Felsenküste der Algarve: Das sind steil abfallende Kliffs vor blaugrünem Meer. Während die Touristen in den Süden strömen, sind die Steilküsten der Westalgarve noch sehr ursprünglich. Das Meer vor Vale do Bispo ist ein bevorzugtes Surfrevier, aber auch ein gefährlicher „Arbeitsplatz“. Hier werden die köstlichen Percebes gepflückt, die seltenen Entenmuscheln, die eigentlich Krebse sind. Nicht weit vom Leuchtturm am Cabo de Sao Vicente gibt es Bratwurst. Seit 1996 verkauft Wolfgang Bald mit seinem Team Nürnberger und Thüringer Würste vor allem an deutsche Touristen – ein lohnendes Geschäft. Die Portugiesen haben eine Vorliebe für Süßes, Mandeln, Feigen, Johannisbrot, Marzipan, und wir schauen einigen Kalorienzauberern über die Schulter. Zwischen Lagos und Faro, an der südlichen Algarve, findet man Yachthäfen, Golfplätze, Bettenburgen und Partymeilen. Im Hinterland bestimmt jedoch die Landwirtschaft das Leben. Manuel João Fortes ist Korkschäler, seit 40 Jahren. Er braucht nur eine halbe Stunde für einen ganzen Baum. Das Naturprodukt verschließt nicht nur Weinflaschen, es wird auch als Dämmstoff und Bodenbelag genutzt oder für modische Accessoires. Das Naturschutzgebiet Ria Formosa gilt als Brutstätte und Zufluchtsort unzähliger Vogelarten. Hier wird aber auch traditionell Meersalz gewonnen. Der Trend zur bewussten Ernährung brachte neuen Aufschwung für die Salzgärten. Flor do Sal wird in viele Länder exportiert. Carla und Sonia Peralta sind Hundenärrinnen. Vor allem der portugiesische Wasserhund hat es ihnen angetan. Seit einer dieser gar nicht mehr sehr schwimmfreudigen Hunde „First dog“ in den USA ist, blüht das Geschäft mit der Aufzucht. Früher halfen die Hunde den Fischern bei der Arbeit. Carla und Sonia bemühen sich, dass die Vorzüge dieser Rasse nicht verloren gehen. Die Reise endet in Tavira. Dort werden Tintenfische mit Tonkrügen gefangen. Der Krug wird mit einem Seil ins Wasser gelassen. Die Wärme des Tons zieht die Tintenfische an, sie schwimmen hinein und können mühelos samt Krug aus dem Wasser gezogen werden: eine geradezu beschauliche Art des Fischfangs. (2012) -

The buildings are ornamented by Azulejos, moor painted tiles. The monuments and statues summon adventurers and explorers: Magellan and Vasco De Gama. The country is full of fishing villages, palm trees, vine arbours, olive tree orchards, and orange gardens. The Playa de Rocha and the other sandy beaches are surrounded by large cliffs, stone archs and lagoons. On the hill of Moniche we travel among pine trees and para oaks. From the lighthouse of the Saint Vincent cape we can only see the endless Atlantic Ocean, which the medieval man thought to be the end of the world.

The region has as its administrative centre the city of Faro, where both the region's international airport (FAO) and public university (the University of the Algarve) are located. Tourism and related activities are extensive and make up the bulk of the Algarve's summer economy. Production of food, which includes fish and other seafood, fruit, oranges, carob beans, figs and almonds, is also economically important in the region. The Algarve is the most popular tourist destination in Portugal, and one of the most popular in Europe. Its population triples in the peak holiday season thanks to a high influx of visitors, and receives an average of 7 million foreign tourists each year. In total, including national visitors, almost 10 million people visit the Algarve annually.

If you’re thinking of visiting Portugal, look no further than Albufeira, situated in the Algarve.
A popular tourist spot is the old town. Here you can take to the shops and markets, wine and dine in its many bars and restaurants. In the evening, watch the old town come to life as street performers entertain the crowds.
If you come at the right time you’ll probably catch a local event or two such as the Fisherman’s Festival, where you can enjoy local food and entertainment.
Or, if you’re looking for a more lively night out there’s the New Town, otherwise known as the strip. Situated a short distance away, the strip has a wide range of bars and clubs and is a great destination for partygoers.
There are tonnes of activities you can do in Albufeira. Thanks to its location on the Algarve coast there are numerous beaches where you can relax, and even have a barbeque on!
If relaxing isn’t your thing then you can take part in many water activities, such as parasailing, jet skiing and many more.
Or, how about taking a boat trip amongst the beautiful coast to view the spectacular caves and rock formations on offer. Did you know that this is where the Beatles got their inspiration for their ‘Yellow Submarine?’
You can even take a jeep tour and explore the non-touristic areas of the Algarve, taking in its beautiful surroundings and finding out more about the area.

Die Felsenküste der Algarve: Das sind steil abfallende Kliffs vor blaugrünem Meer. Während die Touristen in den Süden strömen, sind die Steilküsten der Westalgarve noch sehr ursprünglich. Das Meer vor Vale do Bispo ist ein bevorzugtes Surfrevier, aber auch ein gefährlicher „Arbeitsplatz“. Hier werden die köstlichen Percebes gepflückt, die seltenen Entenmuscheln, die eigentlich Krebse sind. Nicht weit vom Leuchtturm am Cabo de Sao Vicente gibt es Bratwurst. Seit 1996 verkauft Wolfgang Bald mit seinem Team Nürnberger und Thüringer Würste vor allem an deutsche Touristen – ein lohnendes Geschäft. Die Portugiesen haben eine Vorliebe für Süßes, Mandeln, Feigen, Johannisbrot, Marzipan, und wir schauen einigen Kalorienzauberern über die Schulter. Zwischen Lagos und Faro, an der südlichen Algarve, findet man Yachthäfen, Golfplätze, Bettenburgen und Partymeilen. Im Hinterland bestimmt jedoch die Landwirtschaft das Leben. Manuel João Fortes ist Korkschäler, seit 40 Jahren. Er braucht nur eine halbe Stunde für einen ganzen Baum. Das Naturprodukt verschließt nicht nur Weinflaschen, es wird auch als Dämmstoff und Bodenbelag genutzt oder für modische Accessoires. Das Naturschutzgebiet Ria Formosa gilt als Brutstätte und Zufluchtsort unzähliger Vogelarten. Hier wird aber auch traditionell Meersalz gewonnen. Der Trend zur bewussten Ernährung brachte neuen Aufschwung für die Salzgärten. Flor do Sal wird in viele Länder exportiert. Carla und Sonia Peralta sind Hundenärrinnen. Vor allem der portugiesische Wasserhund hat es ihnen angetan. Seit einer dieser gar nicht mehr sehr schwimmfreudigen Hunde „First dog“ in den USA ist, blüht das Geschäft mit der Aufzucht. Früher halfen die Hunde den Fischern bei der Arbeit. Carla und Sonia bemühen sich, dass die Vorzüge dieser Rasse nicht verloren gehen. Die Reise endet in Tavira. Dort werden Tintenfische mit Tonkrügen gefangen. Der Krug wird mit einem Seil ins Wasser gelassen. Portugal. The 5 and half thousand square meters large southern part of the once proud colonial empire is Algarve, bathing all year in the sun. From the hilltops, moor forts look down on to the surroundings. In the old towns narrow roads lead up to the magnificent Manuel-style temples. It has an area of 4,997 square kilometres with 451,006 permanent inhabitants, and incorporates 16 municipalities. The region has as its administrative centre the city of Faro, where both the region's international airport (FAO) and public university (the University of the Algarve) are located. Tourism and related activities are extensive and make up the bulk of the Algarve's summer economy. Production of food, which includes fish and other seafood, fruit, oranges, carob beans, figs and almonds, is also economically important in the region. The Algarve is the most popular tourist destination in Portugal, and one of the most popular in Europe. Its population triples in the peak holiday season thanks to a high influx of visitors, and receives an average of 7 million foreign tourists each year. In total, including national visitors, almost 10 million people visit the Algarve annually.
The Algarve is currently the third richest region in Portugal, after Lisbon and Madeira, with a GDP per capita 86% of the European Union average

The region has as its administrative centre the city of Faro, where both the region's international airport (FAO) and public university (the University of the Algarve) are located. Tourism and related activities are extensive and make up the bulk of the Algarve's summer economy. Production of food, which includes fish and other seafood, fruit, oranges, carob beans, figs and almonds, is also economically important in the region. The Algarve is the most popular tourist destination in Portugal, and one of the most popular in Europe. Its population triples in the peak holiday season thanks to a high influx of visitors, and receives an average of 7 million foreign tourists each year. In total, including national visitors, almost 10 million people visit the Algarve annually.

If you’re thinking of visiting Portugal, look no further than Albufeira, situated in the Algarve.
A popular tourist spot is the old town. Here you can take to the shops and markets, wine and dine in its many bars and restaurants. In the evening, watch the old town come to life as street performers entertain the crowds.
If you come at the right time you’ll probably catch a local event or two such as the Fisherman’s Festival, where you can enjoy local food and entertainment.
Or, if you’re looking for a more lively night out there’s the New Town, otherwise known as the strip. Situated a short distance away, the strip has a wide range of bars and clubs and is a great destination for partygoers.
There are tonnes of activities you can do in Albufeira. Thanks to its location on the Algarve coast there are numerous beaches where you can relax, and even have a barbeque on!
If relaxing isn’t your thing then you can take part in many water activities, such as parasailing, jet skiing and many more.
Or, how about taking a boat trip amongst the beautiful coast to view the spectacular caves and rock formations on offer. Did you know that this is where the Beatles got their inspiration for their ‘Yellow Submarine?’
You can even take a jeep tour and explore the non-touristic areas of the Algarve, taking in its beautiful surroundings and finding out more about the area.

Die Felsenküste der Algarve: Das sind steil abfallende Kliffs vor blaugrünem Meer. Während die Touristen in den Süden strömen, sind die Steilküsten der Westalgarve noch sehr ursprünglich. Das Meer vor Vale do Bispo ist ein bevorzugtes Surfrevier, aber auch ein gefährlicher „Arbeitsplatz“. Hier werden die köstlichen Percebes gepflückt, die seltenen Entenmuscheln, die eigentlich Krebse sind. Nicht weit vom Leuchtturm am Cabo de Sao Vicente gibt es Bratwurst. Seit 1996 verkauft Wolfgang Bald mit seinem Team Nürnberger und Thüringer Würste vor allem an deutsche Touristen – ein lohnendes Geschäft. Die Portugiesen haben eine Vorliebe für Süßes, Mandeln, Feigen, Johannisbrot, Marzipan, und wir schauen einigen Kalorienzauberern über die Schulter. Zwischen Lagos und Faro, an der südlichen Algarve, findet man Yachthäfen, Golfplätze, Bettenburgen und Partymeilen. Im Hinterland bestimmt jedoch die Landwirtschaft das Leben. Manuel João Fortes ist Korkschäler, seit 40 Jahren. Er braucht nur eine halbe Stunde für einen ganzen Baum. Das Naturprodukt verschließt nicht nur Weinflaschen, es wird auch als Dämmstoff und Bodenbelag genutzt oder für modische Accessoires. Das Naturschutzgebiet Ria Formosa gilt als Brutstätte und Zufluchtsort unzähliger Vogelarten. Hier wird aber auch traditionell Meersalz gewonnen. Der Trend zur bewussten Ernährung brachte neuen Aufschwung für die Salzgärten. Flor do Sal wird in viele Länder exportiert. Carla und Sonia Peralta sind Hundenärrinnen. Vor allem der portugiesische Wasserhund hat es ihnen angetan. Seit einer dieser gar nicht mehr sehr schwimmfreudigen Hunde „First dog“ in den USA ist, blüht das Geschäft mit der Aufzucht. Früher halfen die Hunde den Fischern bei der Arbeit. Carla und Sonia bemühen sich, dass die Vorzüge dieser Rasse nicht verloren gehen. Die Reise endet in Tavira. Dort werden Tintenfische mit Tonkrügen gefangen. Der Krug wird mit einem Seil ins Wasser gelassen. Más de 9 millones de turistas llegan cada año al Algarve, la región más al sur de Portugal. Clima, playas y unas puestas de sol increíbles a sólo unos pocos kilómetros. Die Küche an der Algarve lebt von den Gaben des Meeres und wurde deshalb von den Hausfrauen dem wechselnden Glück der Fischer angepasst: Für die Spezialität "Guisado" kommt beinahe jede Sorte Fisch infrage - nur aus dem Meer muss er sein. The buildings are ornamented by Azulejos, moor painted tiles. The monuments and statues summon adventurers and explorers: Magellan and Vasco De Gama. The country is full of fishing villages, palm trees, vine arbours, olive tree orchards, and orange gardens. The Playa de Rocha and the other sandy beaches are surrounded by large cliffs, stone archs and lagoons. On the hill of Moniche we travel among pine trees and para oaks. From the lighthouse of the Saint Vincent cape we can only see the endless Atlantic Ocean, which the medieval man thought to be the end of the world.

Das Meer vor Vale do Bispo ist ein bevorzugtes Surfrevier, aber auch ein gefährlicher „Arbeitsplatz“. Manuel João Fortes ist Korkschäler, seit 40 Jahren. Er braucht nur eine halbe Stunde für einen ganzen Baum. Das Naturprodukt verschließt nicht nur Weinflaschen, es wird auch als Dämmstoff und Bodenbelag genutzt oder für modische Accessoires. Das Naturschutzgebiet Ria Formosa gilt als Brutstätte und Zufluchtsort unzähliger Vogelarten. Hier wird aber auch traditionell Meersalz gewonnen. Der Trend zur bewussten Ernährung brachte neuen Aufschwung für die Salzgärten. Flor do Sal wird in viele Länder exportiert. Carla und Sonia Peralta sind Hundenärrinnen. Vor allem der portugiesische Wasserhund hat es ihnen angetan. Seit einer dieser gar nicht mehr sehr schwimmfreudigen Hunde „First dog“ in den USA ist, blüht das Geschäft mit der Aufzucht. Früher halfen die Hunde den Fischern bei der Arbeit. Carla und Sonia bemühen sich, dass die Vorzüge dieser Rasse nicht verloren gehen. Die Reise endet in Tavira. Dort werden Tintenfische mit Tonkrügen gefangen. Der Krug wird mit einem Seil ins Wasser gelassen. Quedamos en la bella e histórica Faro con Javier, que nos enseña la ciudad antigua y el gran humedal de la Ría Formosa, donde se encuentra la isla desierta. Al vuelta conocemos la principal atracción turística del Algarve, el parque acuático Zoomarine, muy frecuentado por famosos.
Seguimos disfrutando de sol y playa en Quarteira con Carlos, un madrileño que llegó de pequeño a Portugal. Conocemos las grutas de San Rafael, aprendemos qué es el parasailing y nos vamos de fiesta al chiringuito más famoso del Algarve.
Adrián, por último, nos cuenta su peculiar historia; él, jugador profesional de póker; su novia, nieta de los condes de Romanones. Ambos, enamorados del Algarve, nos enseñan lugares muy curiosos como la Capilla de los Huesos o las escondidas cataratas de Pego do Inferno.

Die Küche an der Algarve lebt von den Gaben des Meeres und wurde deshalb von den Hausfrauen dem wechselnden Glück der Fischer angepasst: Für die Spezialität "Guisado" kommt beinahe jede Sorte Fisch infrage - nur aus dem Meer muss er sein.
Der von Tag zu Tag wechselnde Fang, den der Fischer Rogerio Conceição an Land bringt, bestimmt, was bei seiner Familie auf den Tisch kommt. Doch seine Frau Amalia, die mit Rogerio und ihren drei erwachsenen Kindern in dem Küstenstädtchen Tavira wohnt, ist ohnehin offen für diese Zufälle und wirft ihre ursprüngliche Küchenplanung leicht über Bord, so wie sie auch im Leben vieles mit Humor nimmt.
Für das "Guisado", Fisch auf einem Gemüsebett, kann beispielsweise jeder Seefisch verwendet werden, dazu werden Paprika, Tomaten, Zwiebeln und Knoblauch geschmort. Aus selbst gesammelten Muscheln und Schweinefleisch kocht Amalia "Carne de porco com amêijoas".
In Tavira kocht und isst man gemeinsam. Zum Gemüseschneiden kommt die Nachbarin vorbei, und selbst in den Frisiersalon nimmt Amalia frittierte Stockfischbällchen mit. Mit ihrer Schwester macht sie Marzipankonfekt, das die Damen dann bei einem Ausflug in den Dünen essen.
„Zu Tisch in…“ geht dahin, wo die europäische Kochkunst ihre Wurzeln hat: in die Regionen Europas, in denen bis heute authentisch zubereitet und genossen wird, was Acker, Weiden und Fischgründe hergeben.

Because it formed part of their realm, the southernmost province of Portugal was thus named by the Arabs who occupied it and everywhere there are castles which the Christian kings built during the Moorish Wars.Tavira had numerous rulers, among them Romans and Greeks who established a trading centre. Unobtrusive elegance is an indication of the prosperity of bygone times and due to the city’s thirty well-preserved churches it is referred to as The City Of Churches. Olhao is a busy fishing port, the tiled benches on its shoreline offering a relaxed view of the day’s activities. Its fishermen are said to be the most courageous in the region and in 1808 some of them crossed the Atlantic in a small boat until they reached Rio de Janeiro. Faro is the capital of the Algarve, the heritage of numerous cultures that possesses its own unique atmosphere. Near to the Baroque cathedral, the attractive centre of the old town has been well preserved and demonstrates Faro’s historic and dazzling past. Portimao not only boasts a fishing port but also one of the Algarve’s most beautiful beaches. When the Carthaginians came here from the Mediterranean they built a harbour for their ships, the Portus Hannibalis.The sleepy small town of Silves, formerly known as Xelb, was once the splendid capital of the Moorish Al-Gharb. The castle area is a reminder of its former Arab occupation and Christian Crusades. From the huge red sandstone Moorish castle there’s a breathtaking view across the green hills of the surrounding landscape.Three hundred days of sunshine each year, a breathtakingly beautiful landscape, isolated bays with red rocks, golden sandy beaches and crystal blue sea, picturesque villages and castles with a fascinating history. That is the Algarve!
