The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Russian: Сою́з Сове́тских Социалисти́ческих Респу́блик, tr. Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik; IPA: [sɐˈjus sɐˈvʲɛtskʲɪx sətsɨəlʲɪsˈtʲitɕɪskʲɪx rʲɪˈspublʲɪk]) abbreviated to USSR (Russian: СССР, tr. SSSR) or shortened to the Soviet Union (Russian: Сове́тский Сою́з, tr. Sovetskij Soyuz; IPA: [sɐ'vʲetskʲɪj sɐˈjʉs]), was a Marxist–Leninist state on the Eurasian continent that existed between 1922 and 1991. A union of multiple subnational Soviet republics, its government and economy were highly centralized. The Soviet Union was a one-party state, governed by the Communist Party with Moscow as its capital.
Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization devoted to expanding the range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. The organization has released several copyright-licenses known as Creative Commons licenses free of charge to the public. These licenses allow creators to communicate which rights they reserve, and which rights they waive for the benefit of recipients or other creators. An easy-to-understand one-page explanation of rights, with associated visual symbols, explains the specifics of each Creative Commons license. Creative Commons licenses do not replace copyright, but are based upon it. They replace individual negotiations for specific rights between copyright owner (licensor) and licensee, which are necessary under an "all rights reserved" copyright management, with a "some rights reserved" management employing standardized licenses for re-use cases where no commercial compensation is sought by the copyright owner. The result is an agile, low-overhead and low-cost copyright-management regime, profiting both copyright owners and licensees. Wikipedia uses one of these licenses.

The Cold War was a state of political and military tension after World War II between powers in the Western Bloc (the United States, its NATO allies and others) and powers in the Eastern Bloc (the Soviet Union and its allies in the Warsaw Pact).
Historians do not fully agree on the dates, but 1947–91 is common. The term "cold" is used because there was no large-scale fighting directly between the two sides, although there were major regional wars, known as proxy wars, supported by the two sides. The Cold War split the temporary wartime alliance against Nazi Germany, leaving the USSR and the US as two superpowers with profound economic and political differences: the former being a single-party Marxist–Leninist state operating a planned economy and controlled press and owning exclusively the right to establish and govern communities, and the latter being a capitalist state with generally free elections and press, which also granted freedom of expression and freedom of association to its citizens. A self-proclaimed neutral bloc arose with the Non-Aligned Movement founded by Egypt, India, Indonesia and Yugoslavia; this faction rejected association with either the US-led West or the Soviet-led East. The two superpowers never engaged directly in full-scale armed combat, but they were heavily armed in preparation for a possible all-out nuclear world war. Each side had a nuclear deterrent that deterred an attack by the other side, on the basis that such an attack would lead to total destruction of the attacker: the doctrine of mutually assured destruction (MAD). Aside from the development of the two sides' nuclear arsenals, and deployment of conventional military forces, the struggle for dominance was expressed via proxy wars around the globe, psychological warfare, massive propaganda campaigns and espionage, rivalry at sports events, and technological competitions such as the Space Race.

Unlike Germany, which has acknowledged and apologised for crimes committed by its Nazi regime, Russia as the legal successor of the Soviet Union has yet to do so. Instead modern Russia under Vladimir Putin appears to glorify its genocidal past. Many of these incidents occurred in Eastern Europe before and during World War II, and involved summary executions and mass murder of prisoners of war (such as the Katyn massacre) and mistreatment of civilians in Soviet-occupied territories. Although there are numerous documented cases of such incidents, very few members of the Soviet armed forces and leaders such as Vassili Kononov have ever been charged with war crimes and none of them by the International Criminal Court or Soviet or Russian tribunal. For example, when the victors of World War II...
BBC History file documentary on life in Stalin's Russia. Intended for educational use.
One of many stories of the Soviet's raping of innocent civilian women and girls. Most were proud and thought it to be heroic to do so.
General Krebs of the withering Wehrmacht tries a last ditch attempt at negotiating with Soviet general Chuikov. One of my favorite scenes in cinema, combining elements of humor, consequence and pragmatism into one, well thought out entity. A real shame it wasn't included in the final cut. Unfortunately, 12 year olds armed with editing software have turned this brilliant scene (as much as the entire movie Downfall) into their nonsensically translated meme abominations. I figured there might be people who genuinely want to know what is happening here instead of trying to not die from cringe. Made by the U.S. Navy at the height of the Cold War, this film observes current Soviet naval forces and attempts to assess their global reach and strategy. By this time, the Soviets had achieved the world's largest submarine force, and supplemented it with state-of-the-art anti-submarine weapons including the helicopter aircraft carrier Moskva, which is shown in the film. Also shown are various other vessels, including Russian PT boats, Kashin class guided-missile destroyers, and Soviet nuclear submarines capable of firing nuclear ballistic missiles. A brief history of the Soviet navy is presented under Lenin, Stalin and Kruschev, and its aims assessed. The film notes that the current Soviet navy must be assessed not only in terms of warships, but for its omnipresence throughout the world ...
Heading Westwards towards the sun
When the past starts to bleed into one
And the rest will disagree
How your innocence can sway easily
But oh I can tell
Your words so well
And all I can see
Is that I
I'm sorry, sorry
I'm sorry, sorry
Heading Westwards towards the sun
Where we're going everything comes undone
We were lost from the start
We won't be here when the rest falls apart
But oh I can tell
Your words so well
And all I can see
Is that I
I'm sorry, sorry
I'm sorry, sorry
(And I will track you down)
Run so long
Don't run away from me
How long
Don't run away from me
Oh I can tell
Your words so well
And all I can see
Is that I
I'm sorry, sorry
