C64 Games are available in the droves. If I had a penny for every Commodore 64 game available then I'd have a lot of pennies, probably enough to buy some more C64 games. But, this video isn't about buying new games, it's about the best c64 game from my youth. From my unfettered past. This video is my top commodore 64 games from a nostalgic perspective, just because I feel the need to share my favourite games on every console and computer I owned throughout time. Some of us get that urge you know, and I hope you enjoy hearing about the results of that urge.

The Commodore 64, otherwise known as the C64, C-64 or CBM64... What can I say about this machine that hasn't already said. It's an amazing piece of kit which has stood the test of time admirably. In this video, I'll give you the background story of the beast, as well as my personal views, a hardware rundown, my software picks (along with some terrible gameplay) and tell you what's been happening in more recent times for the 30+ year old Commodore machine. BASIC Programming... it's a skill we think is long forgotten on today's youth. In reality, we can still do it, it's just not as abundant as it was in the 80s. It was the default landing page of everyone who turned on their home computer in that era, so there was little choice but to learn it, especially if you had no games. But this was where creativity blossomed, it's where the surge of 1980s game development came from... the bedroom coders, the school kids and even the adults switching career path in favour of their latest hobby. To make a game today you usually buy a piece of software which does most of the work for you... some kind of RPG maker or FPS creator which has layers upon layers of code, slowing down the whole process and really not making the most out of the lightning fast processors of today. Most games were coded in a few kilobytes in the 80s. Today, you can't even fit an email into that space. BASIC Programming did more than allow you to make games. It was a true creative outlet where you could do pretty much ANYTHING you wanted. Your logic was tested to the max, as you figured out the best way to code up a particular routine, all whilst using your problem solving skills to cram it in as little space as possible.
In this series, I'm aiming to bring a little bit of that back, by teaching you how to make a game in BASIC. I'm specifically targeting Commodore BASIC here, as it seems the most accessible, and it's one I spent a good time using back in the early '90s. This episode is an introduction to making a BASIC Game, so I'm taking a gentle introduction to programming in BASIC, with some key elements, but over the coming episodes the goal is to create a fully functional game in C64 BASIC, which you can then tinker and develop to your heart's content. Hopefully if I can get one person to dust off their trusty C64 and get tinkering, then I'll be happy.
This episode is looking at creating a simple guessing game, using random numbers.

Well, I figured I might as well do a C64 one as well :)
I'm not 100% satisfied with this one though.. it's not as good as the Amiga one. The reason is that I made this one just after finishing the Amiga one and I was a little burnt out I guess.. got very sick of making this one almost right away.
It's stilld decent though so I hope some people can enjoy it at least :)

Commodore 64
The Commodore 64, also known as the C64, C-64, C= 64, or occasionally CBM 64 or VIC-64, is an 8-bit home computer introduced in January 1982 by Commodore International. It is listed in the Guinness World Records as the highest-selling single computer model of all time, with independent estimates placing the number sold between 10 and 17 million units.
Volume production started in early 1982, with machines being released on to the market in August at a price of US$595 (roughly equivalent to $1,500 in 2016). Preceded by the Commodore VIC-20 and Commodore PET, the C64 takes its name from its 64 kilobytes (65,536 bytes) of RAM, and has technologically superior sound and graphical specifications when compared to some earlier systems such as the Apple II and Atari 800, with multi-color sprites and a more advanced sound processor.
The C64 dominated the low-end computer market for most of the 1980s. For a substantial period (1983–1986), the C64 had between 30% and 40% share of the US market and two million units sold per year, outselling the IBM PC compatibles, Apple Inc. computers, and the Atari 8-bit family of computers. Sam Tramiel, a later Atari president and the son of Commodore's founder, said in a 1989 interview, "When I was at Commodore we were building 400,000 C64s a month for a couple of years." In the UK market, the 64 faced competition from the BBC Micro and the ZX Spectrum but the 64 was still one of the two most-popular computers in the UK.

Impossible Mission
Impossible Mission is a video game for several home computers. The original version for the Commodore 64 was programmed by Dennis Caswell and published by Epyx in 1984. The game features a variety of gameplay mechanics, from platform, adventure and action games and boasted novel features for the time, such as digitized speech. Impossible Mission, which casts the player in the role of a secret agent infiltrating an enemy stronghold, is widely considered one of the best games for several platforms and inspired sequels, remakes and numerous ports.
Gameplay
The player takes the role of a secret agent who must stop an evil genius, Professor Elvin Atombender, who is believed to be tampering with national security computers. The player races against the clock to reassemble and decrypt the password to Atombender's control room while avoiding deadly robots. Password pieces are found by searching furniture in the rooms. When searching, the player can also reset all moveable platforms and freeze enemy robots for a limited time. The game also features similar rewards for completing bonus puzzles. Impossible Mission enemies include two types of enemies. The first are the robots. These have a cylindrical main body. Their bodies are electrified, and some are able to use a short range death ray. Some are stationary; others move in patterns, and others specifically hunt the player. Some have to actually see the player, and others know where the player is at all times. The second enemy is a hovering, electrified ball. Most of these chase the player.

C64 Games are available in the droves. If I had a penny for every Commodore 64 game available then I'd have a lot of pennies, probably enough to buy some more C64 games. BASIC Programming... it's a skill we think is long forgotten on today's youth. In reality, we can still do it, it's just not as abundant as it was in the 80s. It was the default landing page of everyone who turned on their home computer in that era, so there was little choice but to learn it, especially if you had no games. But this was where creativity blossomed, it's where the surge of 1980s game development came from... the bedroom coders, the school kids and even the adults switching career path in favour of their latest hobby. To make a game today you usually buy a piece of software which does most of the work for you... some kind of RPG maker or FPS creator which has layers upon layers of code, slowing down the whole process and really not making the most out of the lightning fast processors of today. Most games were coded in a few kilobytes in the 80s. Today, you can't even fit an email into that space. BASIC Programming did more than allow you to make games. It was a true creative outlet where you could do pretty much ANYTHING you wanted. Your logic was tested to the max, as you figured out the best way to code up a particular routine, all whilst using your problem solving skills to cram it in as little space as possible.
In this series, I'm aiming to bring a little bit of that back, by teaching you how to make a game in BASIC. I'm specifically targeting Commodore BASIC here, as it seems the most accessible, and it's one I spent a good time using back in the early '90s. This episode is an introduction to making a BASIC Game, so I'm taking a gentle introduction to programming in BASIC, with some key elements, but over the coming episodes the goal is to create a fully functional game in C64 BASIC, which you can then tinker and develop to your heart's content. Hopefully if I can get one person to dust off their trusty C64 and get tinkering, then I'll be happy.
This episode is looking at creating a simple guessing game, using random numbers.

Well, I figured I might as well do a C64 one as well :)
I'm not 100% satisfied with this one though.. it's not as good as the Amiga one. The reason is that I made this one just after finishing the Amiga one and I was a little burnt out I guess.. got very sick of making this one almost right away.
It's stilld decent though so I hope some people can enjoy it at least :)

As anybody who has been gaming for a long time could tell you, games have gotten a lot easier in the last few generations. So, I'm wondering what are other people's feelings on the topic? ... I'll never forget beating something like Delta on the C64 just because of the sheer determination it took to do it (I say beat, but as with a lot of games from that time it looped back to the start when you finished it) ... ....

Retro Tech And The Value Of Nostalgia

In my 46 years, I have never felt such nostalgia. I didn't think I was especially sentimental, but it would appear, given the right situation, I really am ... Later, an Amiga, PlayStations, Nintendo 64 and various PCs ... For those who went through the 80s as I did, loving every minute of home computing's heyday, the sight of the BBC Micro, TI, Dragon 32, Oric-1, C64, original IBM PC, ZX81, Jupiter Ace, to name just a few, was pretty emotive....
