In the theory of Western music, mode (from Latin modus, "measure, standard, manner, way, size, limit of quantity, method") (Powers 2001, Introduction; OED) generally refers to a type of scale, coupled with a set of characteristic melodic behaviours. This use, still the most common in recent years, reflects a tradition dating to the Middle Ages, itself inspired by the theory of ancient Greek music.
Regarding the concept of mode as applied to pitch relationships generally, Harold S. Powers proposed mode as a general term but limited for melody types, which were based on the modal interpretation of ancient Greek octave species called tonos (τόνος) or harmonia (ἁρμονία), with "most of the area between ... being in the domain of mode" (Powers 2001, §I,3). This synthesis between tonus as a church tone and the older meaning associated with an octave species was done by medieval theorists for the Western monodic plainchant tradition (see Hucbald and Aurelian). It is generally assumed that Carolingian theorists imported monastic Octoechos propagated in the patriarchates of Jerusalem (Mar Saba) and Constantinople (Stoudios Monastery) which meant the eight echoi they used for the composition of hymns (e.g., Wellesz 1954, 41 ff.), though direct adaptations of Byzantine chants in the survived Gregorian repertoire are extremely rare.
Music theory is the study of the practices and possibilities of music. It generally derives from observation of, and involves hypothetical speculation about how musicians and composers make music. The term also describes the academic study and analysis of fundamental elements of music such as pitch, rhythm, harmony, and form, and refers to descriptions, concepts, or beliefs related to music. Because of the ever-expanding conception of what constitutes music (see Definition of music), a more inclusive definition could be that music theory is the consideration of any sonic phenomena, including silence, as it relates to music.
The present article is about music theory properly speaking, i.e. about theories, speculations and hypotheses made about the various aspects or music. It describes the elements of music only insofar as they give way to such theories; other informations about these elements will be found in other articles such as Aspect of music and the specific parameters of music described there. Textbooks, especially in the United States of America, often also include under the term "theory" elements of musical acoustics, considerations of musical notation, techniques of (often tonal) composition (Harmony and Counterpoint), etc., which will not be dealt with as such here, but only as they were the subject of theories and hypotheses.
Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound and silence. The common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound). Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and with vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping, and there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal pieces and pieces that combine singing and instruments. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike; "art of the Muses"). In its most general form, the activities describing music as an art form include the production of works of music (songs, tunes, symphonies, and so on), the criticism of music, the study of the history of music, and the aesthetic examination of music. Ancient Greek and Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Common sayings such as "the harmony of the spheres" and "it is music to my ears" point to the notion that music is often ordered and pleasant to listen to. However, 20th-century composer John Cage thought that any sound can be music, saying, for example, "There is no noise, only sound."
The guitar is a popular musical instrument classified as a string instrument with anywhere from 4 to 18 strings, usually having 6. The sound is projected either acoustically or through electrical amplification (for an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar, respectively). It is typically played by strumming or plucking the strings with the right hand while fretting (or pressing against the frets) the strings with the fingers of the left hand. The guitar is a type of chordophone, traditionally constructed from wood and strung with either gut, nylon or steel strings and distinguished from other chordophones by its construction and tuning. The modern guitar was preceded by the gittern, the vihuela, the four-course Renaissance guitar, and the five-course baroque guitar, all of which contributed to the development of the modern six-string instrument.
There are three main types of modern acoustic guitar: the classical guitar (nylon-string guitar), the steel-string acoustic guitar, and the archtop guitar. The tone of an acoustic guitar is produced by the strings's vibration, amplified by the body of the guitar, which acts as a resonating chamber. The classical guitar is often played as a solo instrument using a comprehensive finger-picking technique. The term "finger-picking" can also refer to a specific tradition of folk, blues, bluegrass, and country guitar playing in the United States.
Theory is a contemplative and rational type of abstract or generalizing thinking, or the results of such thinking. Depending on the context, the results might for example include generalized explanations of how nature works. The word has its roots in ancient Greek, but in modern use it has taken on several different related meanings. A theory is not the same as a hypothesis. A theory provides an explanatory framework for some observation, and from the assumptions of the explanation follows a number of possible hypotheses that can be tested in order to provide support for, or challenge, the theory.
A theory can be normative (or prescriptive), meaning a postulation about what ought to be. It provides "goals, norms, and standards". A theory can be a body of knowledge, which may or may not be associated with particular explanatory models. To theorize is to develop this body of knowledge.
As already in Aristotle's definitions, theory is very often contrasted to "practice" (from Greek praxis, πρᾶξις) a Greek term for "doing", which is opposed to theory because pure theory involves no doing apart from itself. A classical example of the distinction between "theoretical" and "practical" uses the discipline of medicine: medical theory involves trying to understand the causes and nature of health and sickness, while the practical side of medicine is trying to make people healthy. These two things are related but can be independent, because it is possible to research health and sickness without curing specific patients, and it is possible to cure a patient without knowing how the cure worked.
Modes are one of the coolest musical concepts to learn. Once you have a grasp on modes you can start expanding your music and go well beyond the usual major and minor scales. Check me out on Patreon if you want to help me make more of these: http://patreon.com/michaelnew UPDATE: Quite a few people have pointed out that the Phrygian mode isn't all that uncommon in certain styles of music, and I was pretty dismissive of both the Phrygian and the Locrian modes in this video. I think I let my own musical biases show through more than they should have, and I'll try to be more careful about that in the future. So... yeah. Sorry. I learned an important lesson though: If you want people to comment on your video, just say something they don't like :)
Modes are extremely powerful and yet modes are often overlooked by even the most experienced songwriters. I think that by understanding modes we can begin to recognise how careful placement of chords and melody can help us to invoke different emotions and feelings. Be careful though. Like with any other piece of dry theory, I'm not sure if the best idea when writing a modern song is to sit down and force it into a certain mode unless you intend to experiment. Modes are one tool, and you wouldn't fix a toaster with a spatula. Modes are often used subtly - it is rare to find a modern example of music based solely around one mode (except major or minor). Modes can exist simply as a short phrase or as chords for a particular section, for instance. What's worse is that modes are often overco...

This is a music theory tutorial on a new way to understand the concept of modes in music theory. This is especially helpful if you are somewhat familiar with the concept of modes, but have trouble understanding exactly WHAT they are, where the idea comes from, and how to visualize them. This is my music theory lesson about modes. Modes are basically the moods of a key, and they are 'activated' by chords or root notes being played over the key. In this video I go over what modes are, what each mode sounds like, the intervals between the notes in the modes, how the modes relate to each other, and how chords bring out the sounds of the modes. This video is a Musical Modes Lesson. Prepare to open pandora's box and understand music theory like never before! We'll target the 3rd and 4th modes of the major scale. Namely Phrygian and Lydian. Lydian is easily the most popular film score mode you hear at the movies. It's characterized by an uplifting major tonality. Phrygian is also popular in movies and is associated with a dark and brooding sound. Using the 3 Note Per String Scale System A Lydian is spelled (A-B-C#-D#-E-F#-G#) Relative to the key of E Major. A Phrygian is (A-Bb-C-D-E-F-G) or relative to the key of F We'll use my Modal Pedal Point Exercise to examine each modal chord formula. Lydian: I-II (A-B) Phrygian: i-bII We'll also use my Twinkle Twinkle Exercise to hear these modes interact with a melody. Take the Mo...

Film Scoring 101 - The Lydian Mode In this episode of Everything Music we discuss the most popular mode used in modern film scoring, the Lydian Mode. I show how composers from John Williams to James Horner to Thomas Newman use one of their favorite scales to create these other worldly, triumphant sounds. The Lydian mode is the 4th mode of the major scale or a major scale with a raised 4th. For example: 1 2 3 #4 5 6 7 or in the key of C Lydian C D E F# G A B This scale is also used by jazz musicians but I will get into that in my part 2 of the Lydian mode. Music employs a number of mechanisms for conveying emotion. Some of them are shared with other modes of expression (speech, gesture) while others are specific to music. The most unique way that music communicates emotion is through the use of contrastive scale types. While Westerners are familiar with the major/minor distinction, the use of contrastive scale types in world musics is universal. Looking at the expression of emotion in both Western and non-Western musics, Brown invokes the theory of Clore and Ortony, who posit three categories of emotions 1) "outcome" emotions related to the outcomes of goal-directed actions (e.g., happiness, sadness); 2) "aesthetic" emotions related to the appraisal of the quality of objects (e.g., like, dislike); and 3) "moral" emotions related to an ass...
