Spiral Jetty is an earthwork sculpture constructed in April 1970 that is considered to be the central work of American sculptor Robert Smithson. Smithson documented the construction of the sculpture in a 32-minute color film also titled Spiral Jetty.
Built on the northeastern shore of the Great Salt Lake near Rozel Point in Utah entirely of mud, salt crystals, basalt rocks and water, Spiral Jetty forms a 1,500-foot-long (460 m), 15-foot-wide (4.6 m) counterclockwise coil jutting from the shore of the lake. The water level of the lake varies with precipitation in the mountains surrounding the area, revealing the jetty in times of drought and submerging it during times of normal precipitation.
Originally black basalt rock against ruddy water, Spiral Jetty is now largely white against pink due to salt encrustation.
Since the initial construction of Spiral Jetty, those interested in its fate have dealt with questions of proposed changes in land use in the area surrounding the sculpture and of the proper amount of preservation, if any.
Robert Smithson (January 2, 1938 – July 20, 1973) was an American artist famous for his use of photography in relation to sculpture and land art.
Smithson was born in Passaic, New Jersey and early on lived mostly in Rutherford. In Rutherford, William Carlos Williams was Smithson's pediatrician. When Smithson was nine his family moved to the Allwood section of Clifton. He studied painting and drawing in New York City at the Art Students League of New York from 1955 to 1956 and then briefly at the Brooklyn Museum School.
Salt Lake may refer to:
The Great Salt Lake, located in the northern part of the U.S. state of Utah, is the largest salt water lake in the Western Hemisphere, and the fourth-largest terminal lake in the world. In an average year the lake covers an area of around 1,700 square miles (4,400 km2), but the lake's size fluctuates substantially due to its shallowness. For instance, in 1963 it reached its lowest recorded level at 950 square miles (2,460 km²), but in 1988 the surface area was at the historic high of 3,300 square miles (8,500 km2). In terms of surface area, it is the largest lake in the United States that is not part of the Great Lakes region.
The lake is the largest remnant of Lake Bonneville, a prehistoric pluvial lake that once covered much of western Utah. The three major tributaries to the lake, the Jordan, Weber, and Bear rivers together deposit around 1.1 million tons of minerals in the lake each year. As it is endorheic (has no outlet besides evaporation), it has very high salinity, far saltier than seawater, and its mineral content is constantly increasing. Its shallow, warm waters cause frequent, sometimes heavy lake-effect snows from late fall through spring.
A spiral is a curve which emanates from a central point, getting progressively farther away as it revolves around the point.

The Spiral Jetty was constructed in 1970 on the bed of the Great Salt Lake. The earthwork art by Robert Smithson has only been fully visible for a third of its life due to high water levels. The Spiral Jetty, created by artist Robert Smithson in the year 1970, lies some 15 miles from the Golden Stake National Monument, in the fantastical state of Utah. It lies in an area named Rozel Point towards the north coast of the Great Salt Lake. It is an example of how a monumental form catches your eye, then your fancy, and draws you into itself. The fact that it is a spiral, upon which you can walk, is a guarantee of the deliverance of this effect. Entrancing and mysterious, this sign unravels as you enter it and continue along its path, and the encounter with the mysterious churning of the water, as well as its arcane mixture of chemical and biological agents, creates an unsurmountable aesthetic experience; comprised of textures, hues, and a variety of consistencies of mineral forms....
My father, Bob Phillips, passed away this week (April 11, 2016). This is his story - in his own words - of how he came to know Robert Smithson and how he was instrumental in the construction of the Spiral Jetty. This is my own amateur video of his presentation on site at the Jetty on June 30, 2013. To my knowledge, he was the last living person with intimate involvement in it's construction. Throughout his life, he shared this story many times. As he grew older, it became harder for him to present the story to his satisfaction. On this day, he agreed to share it with family members (and the numerous other spectators who just happened to be visiting the site) "just one more time".
In 1970, artist Robert Smithson wandered out onto northeastern shore of the Great Salt Lake in Utah and began work on what is perhaps his best known project–The Spiral Jetty. Since Smithson’s untimely death only three years after its completion, Spiral Jetty has become a primal testament to humanity’s mark on the environment and a popular destination for tourists and art lovers alike. On our way out to wade in the Great Salt Lake, we crossed an expanse of crusty salt. This video shows what it was like walking on that jagged and crusty salt.
After our trip to Langkawi, we headed to Georgetown, in Penang, Malaysia. One day we walked around and did all these things in a single day. More coming on: http://migrationology.com/ Penang, Malaysia is an island just off the coast of the West Coast of Malaysia. It’s one of the most famous areas of Malaysia, especially known for its rich and diverse culture and for its food - many people come to Penang just to eat - as did I. Ying and I arrived to Penang from Langkawi, and we stayed in Penang for about a week, doing some work, and eating out way through the city. One day though, we decided to put on our shoes and go to visit as many of the attractions in the center of the city as we could. So this travel videos is an overview of the top things to do in Georgetown, Penang, but also a trav...

This is part two to our trip to Salt Lake City. This video starts off with us driving to Midland, Utah to go swimming at the Crater Pool at :43 . It is a pool that is 60 feet deep inside a calcium crater. The Travel Channel said it is the only one like it in the USA. The water is clear and warm and people scuba dive in there. We also go to the Spiral Jetty, swim in the Great Salt Lake and visit Temple Square in Salt Lake City.

Exploring
On Friday, February 20th, my son, Murphy, and I had an overnight adventure on the northeast shore of the Great Salt Lake, camping near a massive piece of artwork known as the Spiral Jetty. While there, we also hunted Jackrabbits and explored the area. Temperatures were in the 30s and 40s (F), but a nice campfire and some innovation with a couple of water bottles helped to keep us warm and, for the most part, dry. Our campsite was in the remains of an old cabin, so between that and the Spiral Jetty there was a lot of history surrounding us. It was an amazing camp out and we had a great time!

Troublemakers unearths the history of land art in the tumultuous late 1960s and early 1970s. The film features a cadre of renegade New York artists that sought to transcend the limitations of painting and sculpture by producing earthworks on a monumental scale in the desolate desert spaces of the American southwest. Today these works remain impressive not only for the sheer audacity of their makers but also for their out-sized ambitions to break free from traditional norms. The film casts these artists in a heroic light, which is exactly how they saw themselves. Iconoclasts who changed the landscape of art forever, these revolutionary, antagonistic creatives risked their careers on radical artistic change and experimentation, and took on the establishment to produce art on their own terms....

Painter Matthew Ritchie and Village Voice senior critic Jerry Saltz talk about the concept of the sublime in art. Saltz describes a visit to artist Robert Smithson's installation piece Spiral Jetty, and Ritchie discusses the ways that the colossal upsets of the 20th century revised the art world's relationship to the sublime. Hosted by College of Fine Arts School of Visual Arts on March 28, 2007.
