Peak Performance (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

"Peak Performance" is the 21st episode of the second season of the syndicated science fiction television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, the 47th episode overall, first broadcast on July 10, 1989.

In this episode, while in the midst of a war-game exercise, a Ferengi marauder intrudes.

Plot

The Enterprise, under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, is ordered by Starfleet Command to take part in simulated combat exercises to prepare for the Borg threat. A renowned Zakdorn strategist named Sirma Kolrami (Roy Brocksmith) is sent to serve as observer and mediator of the exercise. Commander Riker challenges Kolrami to a game of Strategema, knowing he has no chance to win, just for the honor of playing a grandmaster. Doctor Pulaski pushes Data to challenge the arrogant Kolrami, assuming Kolrami will be no match for Data's android reflexes and computational ability. When the two later play, however, Data is also soundly beaten, causing him to become convinced he is malfunctioning and remove himself from duty.

WXPK (107.1 FM) – better known as 107.1 The Peak – is an American adult album alternative music formatted radio station in White Plains, New York. The station is owned by Pamal Broadcasting, and transmits from a tower in the Westchester County Correctional Facility with an effective radiated power of 1,900 watts.

History

On April 8, 1960, WRNW got its start at 454 Main St in Mount Kisco playing a mixture of light classical and easy listening music, and it went stereo in 1964. Founder and broadcast engineer Richard Burden was instrumental in the development FM stereo broadcasting. By 1967, the station had moved to the second floor at 78 Lexington Avenue, and in June of that year, program director Don Bayley adopted an album rock format making WRNW one of the very first FM stations in the New York City area to play rock music. (New York's WOR-FM went rock in 1966, but was hampered by an AFTRA strike; WNEW-FM started their "Progressive Rock" format in October, 1967.) In 1969 the station was sold to Lake Champlain Broadcasting Company, which shared owners with 105.9 WHBI in Newark. WRNW then played big band music during the day and sold block time from 10pm – 2am weekdays and all day weekends to clients shared with WHBI. According to WRNW's founder, the letters "RNW" stood for "Radio of Northern Westchester."

White Plains, New York

White Plains is a city in Westchester County, New York. It is the county seat and commercial hub of Westchester, an affluent suburban county just north of New York City that is home to almost one million people. White Plains is located in south-central Westchester, with its downtown (Mamaroneck Avenue) 30 miles (48 km) north of Midtown Manhattan.

As of 2013, the city's total population was estimated to be 57,866, up from 56,853 at the 2010 census. According to the city government, the daytime weekday population is estimated at 250,000. The city was ranked third in the top 10 places to live in New York for 2014, according to national online real estate brokerage Movoto.

History

Early history

At the time of the Dutch settlement of Manhattan in the early 17th century, the region had been used as farmland by the Weckquaeskeck tribe, members of the Mohican nation and was called "Quarropas". To early traders it was known as "the White Plains", either from the groves of white balsam which are said to have covered it, or from the heavy mist that local tradition suggests hovered over the swamplands near the Bronx River. The first non-native settlement came in November 1683, when a party of Connecticut Puritans moved westward from an earlier settlement in Rye and bought about 4,400 acres (18 km²), presumably from the Weckquaeskeck. However, John Richbell of Mamaroneck claimed to have earlier title to much of the territory through his purchase of a far larger plot extending 20 miles (32 km) inland, perhaps from a different tribe. The matter wasn't settled until 1721, when a Royal Patent for White Plains was granted by King George II.
