Pythias /ˈpɪθiəs/ (Greek: Πυθιάς, Pūthiás), also known as Pythias the Elder, was a Greek biologist and embryologist. She was the adoptive daughter of Hermias of Atarneus, as well as Aristotle's first wife.
Whilst Pythias' date of birth is unclear, her work flourished around 330 BC and she died in Athens sometime after 326 BC. Aristotle and Pythias had a daughter, Pythias the Younger. Pythias the Younger married three times, but is also said to have predeceased her father. Her first husband was Nicanor, Aristotle's nephew by his sister Arimneste. According to Aristotle's will, Nicanor was to manage the family affairs until his son, Nicomachus came of age. Pythias' second husband was Procles of Sparta. Pythias' third husband was Metrodorus, a physician.
Pythias supposedly worked with her husband, Aristotle, on an encyclopedia from the material they gathered on their honeymoon on Mytilene. She is reputed to have collected a range of specimens of living things. Kate Campbell Hurd-Mead suggests that the couple collaborated in the study of generation.
In Greek historiography, Damon and Pythias (or Phintias) is a legend surrounding the Pythagorean ideal of friendship. Pythias is accused and charged of creating a plot against the tyrannical Dionysius I of Syracuse. Pythias makes a request of Dionysius that he be allowed to settle his affairs on the condition that he leaves his friend, Damon, as a hostage, so if Pythias does not return, Damon would be executed. Eventually, Pythias returns to face execution to the amazement of Dionysius, who because of the sincere trust and love of their friendship, then lets both Damon and Pythias go free.
As told by Aristoxenus, and after him Cicero (De Offic. 3.45), Diodorus Siculus (10.4), and others, Pythias and his friend Damon, both followers of the philosopher Pythagoras, traveled to Syracuse during the reign of the tyrannical Dionysius I (r. 405–367 BC). Pythias was accused of plotting against the tyrant and was sentenced to death.
Accepting his sentence, Pythias asked to be allowed to return home one last time, to settle his affairs and bid his family farewell. Not wanting to be taken for a fool, the king refused, believing that once released, Pythias would flee and never return.

The Knights of Pythias is a fraternal organization and secret society founded in Washington, D.C., on 19 February 1864. The Knights of Pythias was the first fraternal organization to receive a charter under an act of the United States Congress. It was founded by Justus H. Rathbone, who had been inspired by a play by the Irish poet John Banim about the legend of Damon and Pythias. Outside of ancient Syracuse on the island of Sicily, there lived a cruel ruler named Dionysius. He trusted no one. Nearby lived two best friends, Damon and Pythias. One day Pythias spoke out against Dionysius, who quickly ordered his execution, to take place in one month. Pythias wanted to return to his elderly parents to say goodbye and arrange for their care. Dionysius laughed, not trusting that Pythias would return. Damon stood up and offered to take Pythias' place until he returned. The ruler agreed only after stipulating that if Pythias did not come back, Damon would die instead. When the execution day arrived, Pythias had not returned, but Damon still believed that his friend would be there if he could. Just in time, Pythias ran in, offering up his own life for his friend's.
Damon and Pythias: http://bit.ly/R4aifA No matter the odds, they've got each other's back! Guy Williams, TV's Zorro, plunges into sword-fighting fury in the classic Greek tale Damon and Pythias. Williams plays Damon, a devil-may-care outlaw with a gleaming blade in one hand and a seductive woman in the other. When Pythias arrives in the city of Syracuse, Damon - of course - sets out to lighten the newcomer's coin pouch. But the would-be foes become brothers in combat when faced with the cruelty of Dionysius the Tyrant. Together, they brawl, battle, scale walls and elude the Tyrant's troops in a breathless chase pitting their rumbling, rickety cart against thundering horsemen. The steel of their friendship soon matches the steel of Damon's blade, shaping a bond so strong that when Pythias...

Fifty Famous Stories Retold (version 2) by James Baldwin (1841-1925) Some have a slight historical value; some are useful as giving point to certain great moral truths; others are products solely of the fancy, and are intended only to amuse. Some are derived from very ancient sources, and are current in the literature of many lands; some have come to us through the ballads and folk tales of the English people; a few are of quite recent origin (Excerpt from text)

Thinking about what to do
Thinking about what to say
Silence is killing our weak and repulsive youth
Can't you see what I mean?
Self-deception holds you down
Crush the illusions and make your demand
Time to act and time to be
Nothing will come out of nothing my friend.
Afraid of the struggle and the pain
Seems easier to sit down and wait
Ignorance is killing our weak and repulsive youth
Can't you see what I mean?
There is no time to waste
You got to keep the faith
Stand up, grow up.
What will you do when the end is near?
Sneer at the people who opened your eyes?
Ignorance is killing our weak and repulsive race
Can't you hear what I say?
Something is holding you down
What can it be? Can't you see?
Dishonesty is killing our wild and rejecting youth
