The Homestead Act - Gospel Snake (1972* Kim-Pat, KPL-1072) 320 + Flac

A lively helping of oddball private-press Americana from short-lived 70's California country combo The Homestead Act, two of whom; Elmo & Patsy, cashed-in years later and recorded the infamous downhome-styled holiday smash "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer". The cover tracks on here are dynamite, with heady swirls of killer steel guitar licks abundant throughout. And FYI, the red hot session band features the oft-revered Steve Young at the top of its marquee. Vinyl rip by yours truly.

Sumire Yoshihara - Percussions In Colors : Takemitsu + Ichiyanagi (1978 - RCA Japan, RDCE-9) 320 mp3 + Flac

"'Munari by Munari' [Toru Takemitsu] is a controversial piece of percussion work which attempts to obscure the fact that the performance is made by percussion. The sound world upheald by takemitsu’s aesthetic sense represents the natural sound, like a clear and limpid stream in the mountains or the stirring in the woods as the fog drifts through. It shares the same Japanese psychology of “Mu” or nothingness…



On Ichinayagi’s work, the acute contrast in sound and the repetition of sound made a symmetry with movements in the latter half of the work, thus creating a world of wonder.


My wish now is to make a comprehensive compilation of Japanese percussion works with Sumire Yoshihara" (Hiroshi Isaka, producer- from the liner notes)

 
An adventerous and, at turns, meditative outing from Japanese avant-garde percussionist Sumire Yoshihara. 320 vinyl rip by yours truly. Enjoy.

LUZMILA CARPIO Cantos Quechua y Aymaras (Bolivia, 1989)

Luzmila Carpio: "I use the language and music of my people, that of the Indian land, of our mountains, of our lakes, of the air we breathe. I sing my love for the land which witnessed my birth, the land of my ancestors. I speak of Pachamama, Mother Earth, of harmony and love, of the role of women in our civilization, of coexistence between man and nature within a cosmic order, of our traditions, which must not be lost."

I love this like crazy. Luzmila Carpio rings out like an authentic madwoman, channelling free-spirited Andean comtemporary (avant?) folk with the self-assured, inspired strangeness of a near-shaman. Hers is an incredible sound. And for me to call her mad is just the loftiest, most admiring praise of her creative character that I can possibly seems to muster. It would seems that our fair blogosphere has thusfar yielded only a 128kbps version of this disc, but I can say its sounds plenty good to me. Heavenly music. Highly recommended, friends.

Francis Bebey – Un Petit Ivoirien (1979 - Ozileka, OZIL 3307 *France)

Dig this charming French-pressed synthesizer workout from the one-and-only Francis Bebey of Cameroon;  righteous instrumental virtuoso & prolific elder of contemporary recorded Afropop. And what a beautiful album cover! Here's a nice handful of breezily upbeat and stripped-down, drum machine-driven tracks somehow not included on Born Bad's highly enjoyable Bebey synth comp; African Electronic Music. (In fact, a knowing little bird recently hipped me to the fact that the aforementioned BB comp was sourced largely in-part from Bebey's Pygmy Love Song LP, upped way back when by Nauma at Freedom Blues (RIP), and heartily endorsed by Doug Schulkind of the Audio Motherlode way back in Oct. 2010. But I digress...)

Un Petite Ivoirien is yet another great Afro-synth record borrowed here from the collection of one Mr. Jason Urick; musician, comrade, and internet blogger-type. Go give that dude a shout, somewhere, friends. 320 vinyl rip by yours truly. Enjoy!
