Filipinos

The Filipinos (Filipino: Mga Pilipino) are a Southeast Asian ethnic group who are identified and native to the Philippines who share a common Filipino culture and ancestry. According to the 2010 Census, there were 92,337,852 in the Philippines and about 10 million living outside the Philippines but the domestic population was believed to have topped one hundred million in July 2014.

There are around 180 languages and dialects spoken in the Philippines by their respective Filipino ethnolinguistic groups or simply ethnic groups, the vast majority of them belonging to the Austronesian language family, with Tagalog and Cebuano having the greatest number of native speakers. The official languages of the Philippines are Filipino and English and most Filipinos are bilingual or trilingual.

Filipinos are made up of more than 175 ethnic groups around the Philippines and are a mosaic of influences throughout hundreds of years of history shared with neighbors and faraway colonizers. The Filipino identity, with its Austronesian roots, was developed with Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Spanish and American influences.

Filipinos (snack food)

Filipinos is the brand name for a series of biscuit snacks made by Mondelēz International. In Spain, Portugal and the Nordic countries they are produced and sold under the Artiach brand name. Under license to United Biscuits, in the Netherlands they are sold and produced locally under the Verkade brand. They have drawn controversy for having the same name as the people of the Philippines.

Variations

The standard Filipinos snack is ring shaped and come in several varieties coated in either milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate. Milk or dark chocolate versions feature a light colored biscuit. White chocolate versions feature a dark brown biscuit. These can be purchased in large rolls. The dark and white chocolate versions are also available in the Filipinos GoPack or Mini Filipinos, a smaller loose packet of four biscuits.

Filipinos Agujeros (holes) are crisp doughnut hole sized balls coated in either dark or white chocolate.

Filipinos Bigsticks are crispy 20 cm (8 in) stick shaped snacks covered with puffed rice. These are coated in either dark or white chocolate.

Spanish language in the Philippines

Spanish was the official language of the Philippines from the beginning of Spanish rule in the late 16th century, through the conclusion of the Spanish–American War in 1898. It remained, along with English, as a de facto official language until removed in 1973 by a constitutional change. After a few months it was re-designated an official language by presidential decree and remained official until 1987, when the present Constitution removed its official status, designating it instead as an optional language.

Spanish was the language of government, education and trade throughout the three centuries of Spanish rule and continued to serve as a lingua franca until the first half of the 20th century. Spanish was the official language of the Malolos Republic, "for the time being", according to the Malolos Constitution of 1899. Spanish was also the official language of the Cantonal Republic of Negros of 1898 and the Republic of Zamboanga of 1899.

During the early part of the U.S. administration of the Philippine Islands, Spanish was widely spoken and relatively well maintained throughout the American colonial period. Even so, Spanish was a language that bound leading men in the Philippines like Trinidad Hermenegildo Pardo de Tavera y Gorricho to President Sergio Osmeña and his successor, President Manuel Roxas. As a senator, Manuel L. Quezon (later President), delivered a speech in the 1920s entitled "Message to My People" in English and in Spanish.
