Red Roses (Welsh: Rhos-goch, "red moor") is a village in Carmarthenshire, Wales.

General information

Situated in south-west Carmarthenshire, bordering with Pembrokeshire, it forms part of the Eglwyscummin Community area with Ciffig and Marros which in turn forms part of the Laugharne Township ward. The village is situated around the main route to south Pembrokeshire, the A477, and the B4314 which is one of the main routes to the once popular holiday resort of Pendine.

History and local amenities

Surrounded by farming land, the village is near to a number of holiday destinations and has two caravan parks. The local young farmers group were instrumental in creating a memorial garden resiting the memorial stone that lay very close to the main trunk road. A community centre, built in 2008, now occupies the site where an old Methodist Chapel lay abandoned for some time. The local public house - the Sporting Chance, which at one time was named Llwyngwair Arms has been closed since early March 2014.

Red Roses for Me

Red Roses for Me is the debut studio album by the London-based band The Pogues and was released in October 1984. It is filled with traditional Irish music performed with punk influences. The band's approach of mixing traditional songs and ballads with frontman Shane MacGowan's "gutter hymns" about drinking, fighting and sex was innovative at the time. The title "Red Roses for Me" is the name of a play by Sean O'Casey, though his works do not show any direct influence upon the band. The album reached number 89 in the UK album charts.

The front of the album shows the band with the exception of drummer Andrew Ranken (pictured in inset) sitting in front of a picture of United States president John F. Kennedy. The back features Shane MacGowan pictured with his foot in a cast. Accordion player James Fearnley has a bottle sticking out of his coat, while bass player Cait O'Riordan is seen holding a can of beer.

Rose

A rose (/ˈroʊz/) is a woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa, in the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species and thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing or trailing with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach seven meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses.

The name rose comes from French, itself from Latin rosa, which was perhaps borrowed from Oscan, from Greek ρόδον rhódon (Aeolic βρόδον wródon), itself borrowed from Old Persian wrd- (wurdi), related to Avestan varəδa, Sogdian ward, Parthian wâr.

The Pogues

The Pogues are a Celtic punk band from London, formed in 1982 and fronted by Shane MacGowan. The band reached international prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. MacGowan left the band in 1991 due to drinking problems but the band continued first with Joe Strummer and then with Spider Stacy on vocals before breaking up in 1996. The band reformed in late 2001, and has been playing regularly ever since, on the US East Coast around St Patrick's Day and across the UK and Ireland. The group has yet to record any new music and, according to Spider Stacy on Pogues.com, has no inclination to do so.

Their politically tinged music was informed by MacGowan and Stacy's punk backgrounds, yet used traditional Irish instruments such as the tin whistle, banjo, cittern, mandolin and accordion.

The Pogues were founded in Kings Cross, a district of Central London, in 1982 as Pogue Mahone—pogue mahone being the anglicisation of the Irish póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse".

The Pogues have influenced many bands throughout the years, as Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys and Greenland Whalefishers.
