Bob Marley
Robert Nesta "Bob" Marley, OM (6 February 1945 – 11 May 1981) was a Jamaican reggae singer, songwriter, musician, and guitarist who achieved international fame and acclaim. Starting out in 1963 with the group The Wailers, he forged a distinctive songwriting and vocal style that would later resonate with audiences worldwide. The Wailers would go on to release some of the earliest reggae records with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry.
After the Wailers disbanded in 1974, Marley pursued a solo career upon his relocation to England that culminated in the release of the album Exodus in 1977, which established his worldwide reputation and produced his status as one of the world's best-selling artists of all time, with sales of more than 75 million records.Exodus stayed on the British album charts for fifty-six consecutive weeks. It included four UK hit singles: "Exodus", "Waiting in Vain", "Jamming", and "One Love". In 1978 he released the album Kaya, which included the hit singles "Is This Love" and "Satisfy My Soul".

Greatest hits album
A greatest hits album, sometimes called a "best of" album or a catalog album, is a compilation of songs by a particular artist or band. Most often the track list contains previously released recordings with a high degree of notability. However, to increase the appeal, especially to people who already own the original release, it is common to include remixes and/or alternate takes of popular songs; even new material (previously unreleased). At times a greatest hits compilation is the original release for songs that have themselves been released as a single and charted successfully.
Notable compilations
Madonna's The Immaculate Collection is the best selling greatest hits compilation by a solo artist; all of the songs on it are presented in different versions than the original hit versions. The Eagles' Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) is the best selling greatest hits compilation by a group and also one of the ten best selling albums in history. Greatest hits albums are typically produced after an artist has had enough successful songs to fill out an album release. Some artists, such as Mariah Carey, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Kenny Rogers, Aerosmith, Kiss, U2, Dolly Parton, Journey, Los Tigres del Norte, Queen, Kylie Minogue and Billy Joel, have released multiple greatest hits albums through their long careers. Some greatest hits albums are released only at the end of the artist or group's career. For example, My Chemical Romance released a greatest hits album after they disbanded. Other artists, like Eminem have released hits albums in the center of their success. He released Curtain Call: The Hits in 2005 and then Shady XV as a compilation album in 2014.

Damian Robert Nesta "Jr. Gong" Marley (born 21 July 1978), is a Jamaican reggae artist. Damian is the youngest son of reggae legend Bob Marley. Damian was only 2 years old when his father died; he is the only child born to Marley and Cindy Breakspeare, Miss World 1976. Damian's nickname Junior Gong is derived from his father's nickname of Tuff Gong. Damian has been performing since the age of 13.
Career
Early releases (1992-04)
At age 13, he formed a musical group by the name of the Shephards, which included the daughter of Freddie McGregor and son of Third World's Cat Core. The group opened the 1992 Reggae Sunsplash festival. The band fell apart in the early 1990s and Damian started his solo career.
With the backing of his father’s label, Tuff Gong, he released his 1996 debut album Mr. Marley which surprised many who were unaccustomed to hearing a Marley deejaying rather than singing. Marley released his second studio album Halfway Tree. The name "Halfway Tree" comes from his mother, Cindy Breakspeare, being from the rich part of town, and his father, Bob Marley, coming from the poor part of town, thus him being "a tree halfway in between the 'rich' world and 'poor' world." Additionally, Halfway Tree is a well-known landmark that marks the cultural center of Half-Way-Tree, the clock tower that stands where the historical eponymous cotton tree once stood is featured prominently behind Marley on the cover of the album. The album was released on 11 September 2001 and received the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. It was co-produced by Damian Marley and his brother Stephen Marley.

On July 21, 1979 Bob Marley and The Wailers, Dick Gregory, Olatunji, Eddie Palmieri, Jabula, the art of Black Dance and Patti Labelle came to Harvard Stadium in Boston for a concert to benefit the on-going struggles in Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa. The concert was called AMANDLA.: Festival of Unity. A benfit Concert for Relief and Humanitarian Aid to Southern Africa.
25 years later in making this video of the performance of Bob Marley and the Wailers, we celebrate the triumph of these liberation struggles of the people of Southern Africa for equality, dignity and self determination.
This videotape is dedicated in memory of Bob marley singer of songs of freedom and in memory of Kwame Olatunji who was responsible for recording this historic event
This videotape is for the private non-commercial use of the Amandla Production Collective and Haymarket Concerts
Sound Notes
This is a sbd mix directly from the board (which means that what ever adjustments the soundman makes for the sound going through the PA speakers is what you get on your recording). If it was a patch from the sbd it has its own mix seperate from the house mix (which means the soundman adjustments are for the recording not the PA system, usually the mix is more balanced if the sound person has time to set this for the line out signal). Therefore these are the flaws on this recording In the beginning the bass was a liitle low. So from "No Woman No Cry" to the end of the show the sound engineer makes a change and adds more bass on the board feed.This is why you here a difference in sound. Unfortunatley
^ - the bass is a little to high on these 2 songs but then adjusted lower on the rest

It was Bob Marley’s last tour before his tragically early death in May 1981 at the age of just 36. The tour was in support of the “Uprising” album released on June 10th 1980. A few days later on June 13th the live show from Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle was filmed for the famous German music TV series Rockpalast and is presented here for the first time with footage restored to the best possible quality. Bob Marley and the Wailers are on superb form and deliver a set of hit singles and classic album tracks. Marley’s energetic, charismatic performance gives no indication that he was already ill with the cancer that would take his life less than a year later. Bob Marley had gone from "critic's darling" and "buzz-driven roots rocker" to bona fide reggae superstar by the time he arrived in Oakland, California in the fall of 1979 to perform this show with his band, The Wailers. Record executive Chris Blackwell might have discovered Marley in his native Jamaica and exposed him to a massive global audience, but it was rock icons like Eric Clapton, who were singing both his praises and his songs, that helped forward Marley's popularity in America.
This Marley show, recorded less than two years before his untimely death from cancer, is similar to the extended performance found on 1978's Babylon by Bus double live album. Marley lived for the stage, and this show is ample proof that he was one of the most electrifying performers ever to emerge from the international music scene. Like another falling star from an earlier era, Jimi Hendrix, Marley shot across the pop culture landscape like a flaming comet - and before he could be fully recognized for his artistic brilliance - was gone. That's at least one reason why his legacy has elevated him to near mythical proportions.
Opening with "Positive Vibration," this show contains 19 classic Marley songs, including "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)," "I Shot The Sheriff," "No Woman No Cry," "Exodus," "Is This Love?," "Jammin'" and "Get Up Stand Up." The Wailers, though none of its original members except Marley remained by 1979, play rock solid reggae rhythms behind his impassioned vocals. Keyboardists Tyrone Downie and Earl Lindo have incredible chops, and are only outdone by longtime Wailers guitarist Al Anderson. Enhancing this stellar show is a fantastic guest performance by guitarist Ron Wood of The Rolling Stones for the six-song encore.
More than a quarter century after his death, Bob Marley's popularity with outsiders and rebels, coupled with his legacy as a musical genius and status as a pop culture icon, only grows and grows with each passing year. This show is a great example of why Marley's enduring musical catalog remains one of the most exciting and influential in the history of popular recordings.

On April 18th, the country Rhodesia was to celebrate its independence from England and Bob Marley and The Wailers were invited to perform at the ceremony. From that day forward the African nation was to be called Zimbabwe.
Officials from Zimbabwe's government-elect invited Marley and the band to perform at the Independence ceremonies. Cost was to be no barrier: Marley, whose "Zimbabwe" tune had proved inspirational to the ZANLA (Zimbabwe National Liberation Army) freedom fighters, was paying for it all out of his own pocket.

Interviewer: That’s a good name. When did you begin to get involved in music really?
Bob Marley: Around 19…around 19…call it about 1958.
Interviewer: Doing what?
Bob Marley: Well we always interested in music but at that time I was learning trade, you know, and meet up some guys who can sing. One name Desmond Dekker. And so we started out from there and kind of rehearse together and thing, you know, and then one day he went away and did some recording then I followed after.
Interviewer: You weren’t doing the same kind of things then that you are doing now. What kind of music was it in the beginning?
Bob Marley: That music was Ska.
Interviewer: Ska?
Bob Marley: Ska music, yeah.
Interviewer: How does Ska different from Reggae?
Bob Marley: Ska is different- different in sound, different in style, different playing, you know?
Interviewer: Mm-mm
Bob Marley: Ska is a more quicker music than Reggae.
Interviewer: No relation?
Bob Marley: Yeah, is almost the same music break down to go much slower, you know?
Interviewer: Same root?
Bob Marley: Yeah. Is almost the same music- Ska- but only say now if it was playing at 33 it start playing at 7 and a half, you know?
Interviewer: Who were some of the influences?
Bob Marley: Well, I think my biggest influences are Marcus Garvey, Haile Selassie.
Interviewer: From what you heard coming up as a boy about Garvey or what you learned now that you’re grown or what?
Bob Marley: What we hear, what we read, you know, and what we know now about him.
Interviewer: Did you learn much about Garvey in school?
Bob Marley: No, no. You see they don’t teach…it’s the education that we don’t get in school, you know. We don’t get that type of education so that when we grow up we can know who we is. We get more education so that we might know who Christopher Columbus is or who Marco Polo is, you know? But we never really knew who Marcus Garvey is or who Haile Selassie is or any black man is.
Interviewer: Were you born as a Rasta? How did that evolve?
Bob Marley: Well, when I figure now I was born and when born and grown there was a certain amount of consciousness in highself that it was always a lonely world not finding people who might think like me, you know.
Interviewer: Yeah.
Bob Marley: Not to say that I think so differently but because of this consciousness about God and the people where I come from is more Christian. We always tried to stand up in the right. But what we used to find out is that one church quarrelling against the next church and I figured that I never wanted any of that, you know? I never wanted to enter into the thing where this one is fighting against that one and everybody talking about God still. So after going on and going on and coming up the thing that was there got more stronger. I came to Kingston, met some more people and those people were Rasta. I talked to them and found out that it is the same thing that I have inside it’s the same thing…

Bob said That the government basically created a false reality in that we have to work, in order to get pension, health care, because they planted a seed of greed within us so we dwell on materialistic things. While the government at the end takes everything. Herb makes you meditate and realize life and then makes you rebel! Interviewer: Bob, first of all, you just came from a tour. Where were you?
Bob Marley: In England, you know. Was in America first and then after America, we went to England.
Interviewer: The tour in America I hear was Sly and the Family Stone. What was it like working with them?
Bob Marley: Great, you know. Yes we are on this tour with Sly and did some shows with him until after a while we never finished about 3 of the shows because we added some dates on ours.
Interviewer: Yeah, yeah.
Bob Marley: So that's how it really went with that.
Interviewer: Listen, now the time has come when you are going on tours with people like Sly and the Family Stone. I mean these are people that we hear about in Jamaica and when you hear the name you know they are big stars. When you perform on the same bill with persons like that do you feel any different from when you perform in Jamaica on your own?
Bob Marley: Well right now the difference in feelings...right now I don’t feel any difference. I just want to play good music and play good music. So I don't care where the music is playing because it is not the people that we are playing; we are playing music. You know?
Interviewer: Yeah, yeah.
Bob Marley: So we just love to play good music.
Interviewer: But Bob have you at all made any changes in the way you play your music when you go to America or you just paly it the same way that you play it here?
Bob Marley: Well, to tell you the truth, the music that I play or the music that I would like to play is a music that plays in Jamaica but it never really got the full understanding or the music that I'm going to play.....Because the next... from now on it's my music that we're going to play now.
Interviewer: Yeah, yeah. Of course this business about you being popular in England nowadays. You just told me you're on the cover of which magazine? What magazine in England this week; one of the music magazines?
Bob Marley: I hear it is Melody Maker.
Interviewer: Alright. So you're on the cover of Melody Maker in Britain. That must mean that they think a great deal of you. Critics write about your records and all that sort of thing. Do you think this is the point that you want it to reach or what exactly is the point that you want to get to in music?
Bob Marley: Well the point is the fulfillment of revelation. And I know that it is my work to go out into Babylon to really do what I do. But I find myself doing it and I can't stop it because a greater power that the power that I know of myself. Let me do it and then I find no harm coming to me so I do it. But the real thing is that His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I is earth's rightful ruler and I am a citizen of the earth and Zion is Ethiopia. Well, I don't know if it is my work to go out into Babylon and really get the youths together but I find myself in a form where if I have understanding or overstanding I can see it really is doing something towards something, you know. And it's revelation now.
Interviewer: Now Bob, can we talk a little bit about you and how you started out in this singing business? I know you started very young. How did you start?
Bob Marley: Started out crying.
Interviewer: Right from the start?
Bob Marley: Started out crying, you know. And then music becomes a part or music is a part or was a part. But to tell you how it really started it's really a thing that I am going to have to think about how it really started because I can't be ungrateful to Jah. Because today we start yet it was yesterday. So from the beginning, Jah was creating it in the starting for the man to start.

Bob Marley: You know what I mean? So I really have to think about from creation then.
Interviewer: Alright. So let's get it down to this sort of terms now. When did you first go in a studio or somebody got you in a studio or you went on a stage show or something; perform in public?
