Paramount Pictures, which is distributing the planned sequel, didn't immediately comment.

It was revealed in January that Cameron would be returning to his hit franchise as producer, with Deadpool filmmaker Tim Miller to direct. Arnold Schwarzenegger is also set to return in the planned trilogy.

"It's going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she's become return," Cameron told audience members at the event about Hamilton's casting, Deadline reports. "There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn't an example of that for women."

Cameron recently came under fire after comparing Wonder Woman unfavourably to Hamilton's Terminator character, Sarah Connor. Cameron called Gal Gadot's superhero an "objectified icon" but said Connor was defined by "pure grit".
