Fairground Attraction

Fairground Attraction were a British folk and soft rock band. They are best known for their hit song "Perfect" and the subsequent single "Find My Love", and for helping to launch the career of lead vocalist Eddi Reader.

Career

In 1987 Fairground Attraction were signed to RCA, and released their first single, "Perfect", in April 1988. It was an immediate success, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart. Their album The First of a Million Kisses was a blend of folk, jazz, country, and cajun elements (all but one of its songs being written by Nevin). Released in May 1988, it followed the success of "Perfect" by entering the UK Albums Chart at number three, and rising to number two; it was eventually certified platinum. Three other singles were released from the same album: "Find My Love" (which reached number seven on the UK Singles Chart), "A Smile in a Whisper", and "Clare".

At the 1989 BRIT Awards "Perfect" won the award for best single, and The First of a Million Kisses won best album.

Simply Red

Simply Red are an English soul and pop band that has sold more than 50 million albums since the mid 1980s. Their style draws upon influences ranging from blue-eyed soul, New Romantic and rock to reggae and jazz. From their early days, the main driving force behind the band was singer/songwriter Mick Hucknall, who, by the time the band was disbanded in 2010, was the only original member left. At the 1992 and 1993 Brit Awards, they received the award for Best British Group. The group was reactivated in 2015, and continues to record and tour.

History

Pre-history: The Frantic Elevators (1977–1984)

Simply Red's origination dates from a 1976 Sex Pistols gig at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England. Manchester art student Mick Hucknall was one of the few young music fans present, along with Mark E. Smith of The Fall as well as original members of the bands Joy Division, The Smiths and Buzzcocks. The first incarnation of the band was a punk group called The Frantic Elevators, whose 7-year run produced limited releases on local labels and ended in 1984 upon critical acclaim for their final single, "Holding Back the Years".

Fair Grounds

Fair Grounds is a Bradford based Fair Trade social enterprise. Fair Grounds exists to enable people to make informed ethical lifestyle and consumer choices. Fair Grounds buys from producers within an ethical business model and has a relationship with each producer. Fair Grounds sells Fair Trade products wholesale, retail in a Fair Grounds shop in Sheffield and at various events, and conducts an education programme in schools teaching about social justice and trade. Fair Grounds ltd is a member of BAFTS (The British Association of Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers).

History

Fair Grounds ltd was founded by Nina Carter-Brown. Nina had the idea whilst attending Bradford University and studying Peace and Development Studies. She then travelled to Malawi to visit her friend David Atherton and meet Fair Trade producers in the country. On her return Nina put all her energies into the idea and Fair Grounds was born. The founding Directors of the company were Nina Carter-Brown, Ian Carter-Brown and David Atherton. Fair Grounds was initially supported by ThinkBusiness@Bradford, a programme at Bradford University aimed at helping university students start a business.
