The National Zoological Park (originally Delhi Zoo) is a 176-acre (71 ha) zoo near the Old Fort in Delhi, India. A 16th-century citadel, a sprawling green island and a motley collection of animals and birds, all in the middle of a burgeoning urban Delhi. The zoo is home to about 1350 animals representing almost 130 species of animals and birds from around the world. Currently, the director of the zoo is Shri Amitabh Agnihotri, IFS. The zoo can be seen on foot or using a battery-operated vehicle which can be rented at the zoo. Visitors are not permitted to bring any food other than drinking water, but there is a canteen in the zoo. In 2014 a visitor was killed as he had fallen into the white tigers enclosure, leading to questions about visitor and animal safety at the zoo.
The Delhi zoo came decades later after New Delhi was built. although the idea to have a zoo at the national capital was mooted in 1951, the park was inaugurated in November 1959.
In 1952 the Indian Board for Wildlife created a committee to look into creating a zoo for Delhi. The government of India was to develop the zoo and then turn it over to Delhi as a working enterprise. In 1953 the committee approved the location of the zoo, and in October 1955 it assigned N. D. Bachkheti of the Indian Forest Service to oversee the creation of the zoo.
Delhi (/ˈdɛli/, Hindustani pronunciation: [d̪ɪlliː] Dilli), officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, is the capital territory of India. Delhi is historically and culturally connected to both the Upper Doab of the Yamuna-Ganges river system and the Punjab region. It is bordered by Haryana on three sides and by Uttar Pradesh to the east. It is the largest city in India in terms of geographical area - about 1,484 square kilometres (573 sq mi). It has a population of about 16.3 million, making it the second most populous city and second most populous urban agglomeration in India and 3rd largest urban area in the world. Such is the nature of urban expansion in Delhi that its growth has expanded beyond the NCT to incorporate towns in neighbouring states and at its largest extent can count a population of about 25 million residents as of 2014.
Delhi has been continuously inhabited since the 6th century BC. Through most of its history, Delhi has served as a capital of various kingdoms and empires. It has been captured, ransacked and rebuilt several times, particularly during the medieval period, and modern Delhi is a cluster of a number of cities spread across the metropolitan region.
National Zoo, National Zoological Garden, or National Zoological Park may refer to:
The white tiger is a pigmentation variant of the Bengal tiger, which is reported in the wild from time to time in the Indian states of Assam, Bengal, Bihar, Sunderbans and especially in the former State of Rewa.
The white Bengal tigers are distinctive due to the color of their fur. The white fur caused by a lack of the pigment pheomelanin, which is found in Bengal tigers with orange color fur. When compared to Bengal tigers, the white Bengal tigers tend to grow faster and heavier than the orange Bengal tiger. They also tend to be somewhat bigger at birth, and as fully grown adults. White Bengal tigers are fully grown when they are 2–3 years of age. White male tigers reach weights of 200 to 230 kilograms and can grow up to 3 meters in length. As with all tigers, the white Bengal tiger’s stripes are like fingerprints, with no two tigers having the same pattern. The stripes of the tiger are a pigmentation of the skin; if an individual were to be shaved, its distinctive coat pattern would still be visible. For a white Bengal tiger to be born, both parents must carry the unusual gene for white colouring, which only happens naturally about once in 10,000 births. Dark-striped white individuals are well-documented in the Bengal tiger subspecies (Panthera tigris tigris or P. t. bengalensis) as well as having been reported historically in several other subspecies. Currently, several hundred white tigers are in captivity worldwide, with about one hundred being found in India. Their unique white color fur has made them popular in entertainment showcasing exotic animals, and at zoos.
New Delhi (i/ˌnjuː ˈdɛli/) is a municipality and district in Delhi which serves as the capital and seat of government of India. In addition, it also serves as the seat of Government of Delhi.
The foundation stone of the city was laid by George V, Emperor of India during the Delhi Durbar of 1911. It was designed by British architects, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. The new capital was inaugurated on 13 February 1931, by India's Viceroy Lord Irwin.
Although colloquially Delhi and New Delhi as names are used interchangeably to refer to the jurisdiction of NCT of Delhi, these are two distinct entities, and the latter is a small part of the former.
New Delhi has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.
Calcutta (now Kolkata) was the capital of India during the British Raj until December 1911. However, Delhi had served as the political and financial centre of several empires of ancient India and the Delhi Sultanate, most notably of the Mughal Empire from 1649 to 1857. During the early 1900s, a proposal was made to the British administration to shift the capital of the British Indian Empire (as it was officially called) from Calcutta to Delhi. Unlike Calcutta, which was located on the eastern coast of India, Delhi was at the center of northern India and the Government of British India felt that it would be logistically easier to administer India from the latter rather than the former.

Delhi zoo sees surge in visitors following white tiger attack on student Visitor numbers at Delhi’s zoo have swelled – as the Indian public flocks to see the white tiger that mauled a male student to death. An official inquiry is underway to examine the circumstances in which 20-year-old Maqsood Khan, who reportedly had mental health problems, either fell or clambered into the animal’s enclosure before he was fatally attacked. But the tragedy on Tuesday has not deterred the public from gathering to catch a glimpse of the seven-year-old white tiger Vijay, according to The Wall Street Journal. The National Zoological Park usually welcomes about 20,000 to 25,000 visitors a day but that number has greatly increased, zoo officials told the newspaper. Vijay’s enclosure was said to have been ...
Today l went for a trip to Delhi Zoo, the place is pretty bad, it doesn't have half the animals it claims to have, and half the ones they do have a fake! The enclosures are terrible and most of the animals are stressed. If you're an animal lover i'd avoid it. Visited November 2015.

How do you blame a zoo when a man decides to jump into a White Tiger's enclosure? That is what this man did at Delhi Zoo. Once inside, the seriousness (and no doubt, idiocy) of what he did hit home. But it was too late. The tiger sizes up the man and irritated by the screaming and stoning from zoo visitors around him proceeds to 'check him out'. That checking out, unfortunately, included seizing hold of him and dragging him up his enclosure. That was the end of the poor man... Tiger's fault or not...? What say you? This footage is part of the professionally-shot broadcast stock footage archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd., the largest collection of HD imagery from South Asia. The Wilderness Films India collection comprises of 50, 000+ hours of high quality broadcast imagery, mostly sho...

A white tiger at the New Delhi Zoo has attacked and killed a young man inside the tiger enclosure. There are mixed reports as to whether the young man jumped, or has accidentally fallen into the enclosure, and even the age of the individual. However, the most credible reports indicate the young man was an Indian student who slipped while taking photo's. National Zoological Park spokesman Riyaz Ahmed Khan said the man ignored repeated warnings that he should not get too close to the outdoor enclosure and climbed over a knee-high fence and small hedges. Authorities eventually frightened the tiger into a small cage inside the enclosure. Police arrived on the scene "very quickly", but could not save his life. The man, whose body remained in the outdoor enclosure two hours after the attack, ...

The National Zoological Park is a 176-acre zoo near the Old Fort in Delhi, India. A 16th-century citadel, a sprawling green island and a motley collection of animals and birds, all in the middle of a burgeoning urban Delhi The Indian Board for Wildlife felt in the year 1952 to have a zoo in the national capital of the country to provide recreation to people at large. Accordingly, an ad-hoc committee of some prominent nature lovers of Delhi, including Smt. Indira Gandhi, was constituted under the Chairmanship of Chief Commissioner to formulate a proposal for establishment of Zoological Park for Delhi. Mr M.E.F.Bowring Welsh, of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was appointed as its Secretary. The committee met on 9th September, 1953 and approved the site between Purana Quila...

A gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo was shot and killed Saturday after it grabbed a 4-year-old boy who fell into the animal’s enclosure. Maynard said the team decided to use deadly force instead of tranquilizers to subdue the gorilla because it could have taken some time for the drug to take effect when an animal was in agitated state. Several theories have been doing the rounds on social media about the reason behind the much talked Tiger incident from Delhi Zoo. After the Forensic report of the victim came, which suggested that the young man, later-identified by police as Maqsood Khan, 20, died of suffocation. According to our source, there were about six deep wounds on the left side of Maqsood’s neck. There was excessive bleeding from the wounds. The Tiger did not eat any body part of the victim. So here, do you believe, that the said Tiger was actually trying to save that young man from stones thrown by those idiotic on lookers on Tuesday (23 Sept, 2014) after that guy fell into a ditch in the animal's enclosure and was unable to climb out to safety. That's why the Tiger caught the neck of that man, and kept far f...

Shocked public watches as white tiger mauls and kills youth at Delhi zoo New Delhi: In a hair-raising incident which was captured live on cameras, a white tiger killed a youth after he fell into the animal’s moat in the Delhi Zoo, an official said on Tuesday. The incident, which took place between 12:30 pm and 1 pm, created a sensation and word soon spread through the city. Eyewitnesses and zoo officials said the young man, who was later identified as Maqsood, a resident of Anand Parbat in Delhi, was leaning against the moat which separated the tiger enclosure from the visitors' gallery, tumbled into the dry moat and immediately was face to face with the six-foot-long tiger which itself appeared initially surprised on seeing the human intrusion. "As soon as the youth slipped and fell into ...

NINGBO, CHINA — A man visiting the Youngor Zoo suffered death by tigers, after he scaled a wall to get into the zoo for free, but paid the price with his life. On January 28, the man surnamed Zhang and his coworker surnamed Li decided to take their families for a nice outing at the Youngor Zoo. While their wives walked in the traditional way with Zhang’s children, the two men decided to hop the fence, in an attempt to skip out on paying less than $20 USD each for park admission tickets. Scaling the zoo’s 10-foot tall outer wall, past warnings and wire netting, they met with another 10-foot wall. While Li stayed back, Zhang forged ahead. Unfortunately, when he dropped down, he didn’t realize he’d just entered tiger territory. Trapped like a rat and surrounded by four big cats, Li walked r...

So why don't you tell me
You're hanging above me
There's room
Everywhere
And I can't walk on air
