Quito (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈkito]), formally San Francisco de Quito, is the capital city of Ecuador, and at an elevation of 2,850 metres (9,350 ft) above sea level, it is the highest official capital city in the world. It is located in the Guayllabamba river basin, on the eastern slopes of Pichincha, an active stratovolcano in the Andes mountains. With a population of 2,671,191 according to the last census (2014), Quito is the second most populous city in Ecuador, after Guayaquil. It is also the capital of the Pichincha province and the seat of the Metropolitan District of Quito. The canton recorded a population of 2,239,191 residents in the 2010 national census. In 2008, the city was designated as the headquarters of the Union of South American Nations.
The historic center of Quito has one of the largest, least-altered and best-preserved historic centers in the Americas. Quito, along with Kraków, were the first World Cultural Heritage Sites declared by UNESCO in 1978. The central square of Quito is located about 25 kilometres (16 mi) south of the equator; the city itself extends to within about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) of zero latitude. A monument and museum marking the general location of the equator is known locally as la mitad del mundo (the middle of the world), to avoid confusion, as the word ecuador is Spanish for equator.

Here I am with the second part of Quito's modern districts. With this video I just want to show everyone Quito is not only a worldheritage or historical city. This city has gone through lot of changes in the past years. Furthermore, Quito is an important regional city in south america. It is small in comparison with other latin american cities but it definitely has the ability to compete with its bigger counterparts. Quito may not have skyskrapers or anthing like that, that is because of the seismic vulnerability. Therefore I wanto to highlight something: "Skyskrapers are no indication of economical welfare or anything like that". Look to many european cities.. ;-) Enjoy this video ! #Quito #Ecuador Follow me on social media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Majesticecua... Instagram...

Travel video about destination Quito in Ecuador. Quito, otherwise known as the ‘divine city’, is the capital of Ecuador. It is a Spanish colonial city and Baroque gem surrounded by volcanic mountains, its historic centre having been built on the ruins of an Inca city. La Basilica is situated on a northern hill and is one of the city’s most monumental buildings measuring a hundred and forty metres long and thirty five metres wide. It is one of Quito’s earliest religious buildings and its construction began in 1892 when, a century later, it was consecrated by the Pope. The basilica is an architectural symbol of an autocratic Catholic church which dominated the country until the Liberal Revolution of 1925. The former Inca city subsequently became a splendid, yet strict, religious settleme...

Travel video about destination Ecuador. Ecuador is the smallest of the Andes’ states in South America and a land that derived its name from the Equator. A natural paradise with a living Indian culture and captivating colonial towns that was once part of the Inca Realm and later the sought-after possession of various European colonial powers. Quito, the "divine city", is the capital of Ecuador. Steep and narrow steps lead downhill to the Centro Historico in which many of its small buildings have been rebuilt several times due to devastating earthquakes. In 1536, Quito was newly founded and built on the ruins of an Inca town. West of Quito the edge of the extinct Pululahua Volcano is accessible by car. It is the largest volcanic crater in South America and the huge caldera with its steep ...

I didn't know much about Ecuador except the Galapagos islands so as I arrived in Quito, my initial planned was to be in the country for 2 weeks and move on to Peru. What I did not realize though was the how much more to Ecuador than it is advertise. Did you know that there are more bird species in Ecaudor than in North America and Europe combined!? Did you know that Ecuador has one of the most concentrated numbers of volcano in an area!? Did you know that there are so many volcanos here, you can be busy hiking them for weeks!? Did you know that you can go off and hike 3 - 4 volcanoes right from Quito and came back and sleep in the city? Me neither! Ecuador is truly a hikers' and nature lover's paradise! Instead of spending only 2 weeks, I spent a whole month traveling around Ecuador. I ...

Traveling to far away places has a different level of adventure for everyone. Some find the unknown to be exciting, willing to risk it all by not planning, with the daring-do and devil may care attitude only the most well centered and adaptable possess. On the other hand most like some semblance of order, while not giving in to the hum-drum, memorized drone of the disinterested tour guide spouting poor English at best. Going to the same places, seeing what everyone in the world has already seen, with little chance to really discover those unforgettable tidbits which create indelible, technicolor, 3D, forget the Kodak moments. Being savvy when you haven’t been to the place you’re going takes a little bit of time, and being in touch with someone who’s been there…done that…got the story wi...
When I receive the blessing I've got coming
I'm going to raise an ice-cold glass of water
And toast the living and the dead who've gone before me
And my head will throb like an old wound reopening
When I get off the bus down there, my children
They all are going to greet me at the station
Like gypsies they will dance around me
And the choral droning sound their voices make will saturate the evening
When I get off the wheel I'm going to stop
And make amends to everyone I've wounded
And when I wave my magic wand
